SOSE Students will identify stereotyping through traditional and non-traditional roles in fairytales. They will investigate the historical sources of various traditional fairytales, write and publish a fractured fairytale individually. In groups, they will compose and publish a fractured fairytale using the Photostory software. Identify stereotypes of characters within a traditional fairytale. Design a Wanted poster for a fairytale character. Complete a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities/differences between traditional and fractured fairytales. Students create their own fractured fairytale character and compose a trading card for their character.

SOSE OVERVIEW
Content/ Learning Activities Introduction to Fairytales- What is a fairytale? As whole class, complete K-W-L to discover what is known by students and what students want to know about fairytales. Each student to write K-W-L into SOSE books and complete L section upon completion of unit. As whole class and in small groups, read various examples of traditional fairytales. Examine the country of origin, cultures and morals behind them. In small groups, explore various traditional fairytales through drawing storyboards. Identify stereotypes of characters within a traditional fairytale- eg princess- beautiful; prince- saves the day; witch- ugly, evil; various animals- wolf (evil), pigs (innocent). Identify stereotypes within the students daily lives- eg. on TV, books. Are these stereotypes always the case? Students to find examples in their daily lives of exceptions to stereotypes based on gender, work, sport, race, nationality, religion. How can students ensure that they dont fall into the trap of making generalizations/ stereotypes? The Never-Ending Story Audience: 4 and up Rating: G for General Exhibition Release date: 1984 Bastian is a lonely boy who, in order to escape the problems he faces in real-life, escapes to the magical world offered by a mysterious book, The Never-Ending Story. The book revolves around a courageous young man, Atreyu, who is chosen to fight against a force, The Nothing, that is threatening to take over the world. In his quest, Atreyu must face fierce creatures, giant forests and numerous lifethreatening situations. Parents should understand that there are some scenes that contain fighting and death which may be distressing for younger children. (Students complete the subjective component- the reviewwhy they liked it/ didnt like it). This mystical, fantasy film explores the issues of children finding their own identity, belief in ones self and abilities and never giving up. People who enjoy this film will also like, The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan.
