Content/ Learning Activities Introduction to Fairytales- What is a fairytale? As whole class, complete K-W-L to discover what is known by students and what students want to know about fairytales. Each student to write K-W-L into SOSE books and complete L section upon completion of unit. As whole class and in small groups, read various examples of traditional fairytales. Examine the country of origin, cultures and morals behind them. In small groups, explore various traditional fairytales through drawing storyboards. Identify stereotypes of characters within a traditional fairytale- eg princess- beautiful; prince- saves the day; witch- ugly, evil; various animals- wolf (evil), pigs (innocent). Identify stereotypes within the students daily lives- eg. on TV, books. Are these stereotypes always the case? Students to find examples in their daily lives of exceptions to stereotypes based on gender, work, sport, race, nationality, religion. How can students ensure that they dont fall into the trap of making generalizations/ stereotypes?
