Lesson Plan STARHUB-CENTRAL SINGAPORE NURTURE PROGRAMME NURTUREPLUS LESSON 3: CCVC WORDS Part 1 Duration Lesson Materials Reading

Material: Own PM+ Level books for each group (depends on proficiency level of each student group) 1 set for teacher, 1 for pupil Notebook / Worksheet for each pupil: Student Worksheet Lesson 3

10 minutes READING FLUENCY Objective: To check / monitor students progress in reading. 1. In own groups, ask each student to read the book aloud. 2. Teacher checks reading of each student. While student reads: 3. Teacher will correct any mistakes made. 4. Students will write down words not read correctly in their notebook /worksheet. 5. While teacher is assessing a particular student, the rest will read on their own while waiting for their turn.

10 minutes WORD STUDY Objective: Students will learn to read CCVC (consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant) by reading familiar CVC (consonant-vowelconsonant) words and then changing the initial consonant to a blend. 1. Recap CVC words by writing some CVC words on the board / flip chart / small magnetic board. 2. Ask students to read the word. 3. Add one letter before the vowel / before the first consonant to change the word to become a CCVC word (e.g. slob - sob / stop - top) 4. Inform students that by doing the above you have changed the beginning consonant (underline on the board) into a blend and ask the students to say out the Whiteboard / Flip chart Teacher ResourceLesson 3 Student WorksheetLesson 3

Teach students that the two letters form together to create a /sl/ or /st/ sound and say out the blends. 6. Make students repeat the sound. 7. Say out the CCVC word and have the students repeat. 8. Explain to students the new meaning of the word and check for comprehension. 9. Write 5 other CVC words on the board (cop, sun, sit, lab, tip) and create new CCVC words by adding another letter and creating a blend in the process. (crop, spun, slit, slab, trip) 10. Make students write these new words in their own notebook / worksheet. 11. End the lesson by reviewing all the CCVC words and make all students read all words together, ensuring proper pronunciation.

20 minutes INSTRUCTIONAL READING Objective: Students will learn to get the gist of a story after reading a text. Before reading: 1. Pass the books to students. 2. Group students into groups of 4. 3. Ask students to guess what the story is about by looking at the title and its cover picture. 4. Introduce 3-5 new vocabulary words and get students to guess the meaning of each word as they read the book later. Reading: 1. Make students read books in their own groups.

Get each student in the group to share their answers. 4. Teacher discusses student answers ad correct them. After reading: 1. Review new vocabulary words learnt. 2. Correct student responses. 3. Reward the group with the most number of correct guesses for meanings of words. Lesson 3

10 minutes WRITING (REVIEW OF WORDS LEARNT) Objective: Students will improve writing fluency and recap CCVC words learnt. 1. Review the CVC and CCVC words learnt in the lesson and encourage students to write as many words as they can remember from the words they have seen or read. 2. Time students as they write the words in their notebook / worksheet. 3. Ask each student to read the words they have written and share to the class. 4. Monitor student work. WORD GAMES Objective: Students will recap what they have learnt through the use of games. 1. In their own groups students play a board game that tests recognition and spelling of CVC and CCVC words. 2. Teacher monitors student progress and check student participation. 3. Reward student participation. (e.g. through giving stickers as a form of encouragement.) Board Game (CVC initial / medial/ final sound, CCVC initial, medial, final sound)
