THE UPGRADED PROJECT METHOD Project Method- a method of teaching wherein students should be allowed to explore and experience

their environment through their senses and, in a sense, direct their own learning by their individual interests. - Involves students in the active creation of information, such there is sustained reflective thinking on topics that have a real-world quality to them. This method was propounded by William Heard Kilpatrick. Pupil is assigned a project which has direct utility for the students. Students work on the project under the guidance of the teacher. Find out the solution of the problem based on their experience. Student follows a collective approach in project method unlike individual problem solving as in Heuristic method. The problem given in the form of project is real while the problem of heurism may be real as well as imaginary. The approach of the project is productive, where something useful is created. Unlike heurism which is analytical. Types of Project: Constructive project- Pupils work physically in or outside the class like writing letters, essays on given topics, preparing fields for games, playing drama etc. Aesthetic project- Appreciation powers of students are developed. Problematic project- Students learn solutions of life- related problems. Drill project- Working capabilities and automation of students are increased. Steps Involved in Project Method: 1. Creating situation 2. Selection of the project 3. Planning 4. Execution 5. Evaluation 6. Reporting Limitations of this method: It is a time consuming method. It is difficult to complete the prescribed syllabus in a particular time. It is a very costly method. It is not applicable for the lower classes. All topics are not able to teach through this method. It is not applicable for the all schools. It needs so many materials for the execution. The Upgraded Project Method In this revised method, there is: a tighter link between the uses of projects for simply coming up with the product to having the students undergo the process of complex/higher thinking under the framework of the constructivist paradigm. Students have the free choice of what to use and how to produce an effective learning outcome. Teacher guides and facilitates the learning process.
