The Rs 165-crore Baidyanath Group, comprising its parent company Sri Baidyanath Ayurvedic Bhawan Ltd., has recently acquired a new brand by the name of Puma from a Nagpur-based export company to make an entry into skin and hair care products. By floating a new subsidiary company by the name of Ayurvedanta Pvt. Ltd., the group has made a foray into the FMCG industry with this brand. Owned by Puma Herbal Products, Puma as a brand has been exported for the past 20 years. Earlier it had a presence in the domestic market. Mr. O.P Khanduja, General Manager, Sales & Marketing, Ayurvedanta Pvt. Ltd., said with its strong ayurvedic credentials, Baidyanath would now like to launch an urban brand. "However, we do not intend benchmarking ourselves with any FMCG giant but want to go slowly into the business," he says. The company has to invest heavily in building the Puma brand. Although Baidyanath has a relatively strong distribution network for OTC and ayurvedic medicines, selling its skincare and hair care products is going to take fresh investments in the distribution network. Adds Mr Khanduja, "We intend reaching out to more general and cosmetic stores and want to add 30,000 new outlets in the first phase of building our retail distribution network for our new brand. Apart from getting in a celebrity to endorse the Puma brand, the company will be relying heavily on the heritage brand of Baidyanath to get consumers from its existing base of loyal Baidyanath users. As Khanduja says, "We will validate all our products under Puma as being developed by the Baidyanath Research Foundation. After all Baidyanath is one of the largest manufacturers of classical ayurvedic medicines." Presently the `pure and herbal' offerings under the Puma brand include a shikakai shampoo, a skin cream, a foot cream, a fairness cream, an antiseptic cream and a prickly talc with price points catering to the masses. There are plans to stretch its Puma franchise into therapeutic lifestyle products.
