SE 591 1 Observation and Reflection Kathleen Samulski

Reflection
On Monday, July 23, I spent 2 hours observing an ASD teacher, Mrs. Bonderanok for 2 hours. The lesson took place at a wildlife preserve at the Howell Nature Preserve, in Howell, Michigan. As a part of the 5 day overnight cap, this was in a wilderness setting. The students were high school students with ASD, ranging from 16-18 years-old. The lesson began with a hike, and Mrs. Bonderanok pointed out various plants and trees. We then arrived at the nature preserve. Mrs. Boderanok explained the circumstances under which animals come to reside at this location. She then provided interactive instruction as we moved through the tour of nearly 2 dozen animals. The purpose was to expose students to different types of animals, their natural habitat, features, and conditions of their residency. Not only did Mrs. Bonderanok guide the lesson, but a Howell Nature Preserve Staff member provided an excellent resource of information. The lesson addressed many of the competencies. Competency 2, the implementation or appropriate, effective instruction for students with ASD was implemented. So was competency 6, effective behavior management. This was an authentic learning experience. This lesson was engaging, and the students seemed quite interested the material. The Howell employee did not seem to understand the nature of ASD, though, and seemed annoyed by the students questions. I would have taken him aside to educate him briefly on ASD.
