SE 591 1 Observation and Reflection Kathleen Samulski

Reflection
On Wednesday, July 25 I spent 2 hours observing teacher, Jason Eroyan for 2 hours. The communcation lesson took place at the Howell Nature Preserve, in Howell, Michigan. As a part of the 5-day overnight cap, this was located in a wilderness setting. The students were high school students with ASD, ranging from 16-18 years old. The lesson began at the obstacle course. We had to work as a team to support the students on the various obstacle courses. This required communication and physical stance to support the students. Mr. Eroyan described the proper way to navigate each course. Not only did Mr. Eroyan guide the lesson, but also our Howell Nature Preserve Staff member provided an excellent resource of information. This was an authentic learning experience. This lesson was engaging and interactive. The students really enjoyed the physical challenge of each course, and they cheered one on in a very appropriate manner. After the communication/obstacle course lesson, the students hiked to the zipline setting. The Howell staff member demonstrated the correct way to wear the harness and helmet. The students were then given the opportunity to suit up. While students were waiting, the Howell staff engaged students in communicating across the swamp with the other staff member. This included checking for readiness and a countdown. This was the highlight of the trip for many students. The lesson addressed many of the competencies. Competency 2, the implementation or appropriate, effective instruction for students with ASD was implemented. So was competency 6, effective behavior management.
