SE 591 1 Observation and Reflection Kathleen Samulski

Reflection
On Thursday, July 30, I spent 2 hours observing teacher, Chelsea Bodary. The lesson took place at the Paun Elementary School, in Lincoln Park, Michigan. The students with ASD were learning in a self-contained ASD Extended School Year (ESY) setting. The students were elementary-aged students. The lesson began with Ms. Bodary reading Animals, Animals. Ms. Bodary modeled appropriate reading strategies. They reread the story with the students taking turns Round Robin style, reading the text. The students then wrote in their journals about classroom objects, giving clues so that their audience could guess the item. Ms. Bodary transitioned the students to a math activity, starting them with a word search activity. The teacher modeled with manipulatives the appropriate way to solve word problems. Studetns used blocks to collaborate on solving a word problem. The extension was word problem BINGO. Finally, I observed a one-on-one lesson with a student. The teacher modeled an experimentthe focus for the student was to work on fine motor skills. I like Ms. Bodarys teaching style. The classroom was organized with clear expectations. The observed lessons addressed many of the competencies. Competency 2, the implementation or appropriate, effective instruction for students with ASD was implemented. So was competency 6, effective behavior management. Competencies 5 and 6 were also addressed with organization and behavior management.
