Robert Arnold Intl 3111 July 23rd 2012 Microtheme 4 Gabriel Garcia Marquez short story One of These Days is about a dentist and his encounter with the mayor of his town. The story shows how the relationship between the warlords and the basic man in South America. The author of this story is from Columbia which historically and currently dealing with a lot of issues with warlords. There are a few themes throughout the short story the most major one being power. There are few instances that can be easily shown. First of all the mayor is in excruciating pain and it can be assumed he is the only dentist in town because he would presumably go to a different one. The mayor has caused a war and towns people have died. The power to relieve the pain of the mayor is in hands of dentist at first he doesnt want to help the mayor but a threat makes him help. He has the power to numb the mayor but he wants him to suffer like the towns people are under the reign of the mayor so he says do to an infection the dentist cannot give him Novocain and pulls his tooth without any sort of pain medicine. He wanted the mayor to suffer the pain.

There is also the theme of revenge. He claims the abscess will not allow him to give him pain medicine. He also says now you will pay for our twenty dead men also an indication of revenge. He also does not have very much sympathy for the mayor because the only thing he does is give him a cloth for his tears and sends him on his way and yells to the mayor to pay his bill one way or an other
