Gandhigiri or Dadagiri ?

The world's largest democracy celebrates
" I ndependence Day" on August 15t h.
Emancipation from the British on Gandhian
principles with cameo roles played by Bhagat
Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose ushered in
freedom to govern and vote. After 65 years of
self-rule the parameters of liberation have
radically changed. Today's India is a global
corporate conglomerate exploring new spice
routes to seek victories on Wall Street rather
than Main Street. The l itmus test here is
whether our country's politicians are dyeing
their fabrics in Gandhian principles or sewing
them in hustler suits with pockets of greed.
In a worl d where e-mai l has out wi nged
pi geon-mai l there are no more vaul ts of
secrecy. If layers of corruption are erased,
India can see a faster pace of progress and
enlarge the middle-class with even higher
purchasing power thus beating the clouds of
recession looming over every nation.

In spite of the Jekyll-Hyde-Mantriji pacing
lobbies of power, we have come a long way.
As a G-20 member and a BRICS recognition
there is hardly a TV channel, or a newspaper
column or a radio broadcast in the US that
does not portray India in a positive light. Many

blurred between Hollywood and Bollywood.
The talent and technique of film-making has

boundaries. Our music and ragaas permeate,
promote and prosper in a variety of brand
campaigns. Seeing our own archived reel of
Shammi-Elvis -Kapoor gyrating on a CNN
show for a Heineken commercial is not a
fantasy but a reality. Indian authors bagging
prizes for writing English literature no longer
rai ses eyebrows. Very soon t he tabl et
"Aakash" at $35.00 per unit will capture the
dreams and imagination of a computer-literate
and yet computer- starved nation. Only 8% of
the 1.22b population own computers.

On the social landscape we have skied the
peaks of hypocrisy. In a civilization punctuated
by Kamasutra, recently "Cosmopolitan India"
boasted their covers are uncovering the myths
of a shy Indian woman. More women are
reading Cosmo-India and a dating website in
New York found to their surprise that the
following in India led them to open an office in
Mumbai even before their home office took-off.

Islamic Society of Joplin Masjid
Razed In Fire; 2nd This Summer
JOPLIN, Mo. Islamic Society of Joplin
Masjid burned In Fire 2nd time in this Summer,
Investigators says it will take a few days to
determine if the fire that destroyed a southwest
Missouri Masjid was arson.
Michael Kaste, special agent in charge of the
FBI's Kansas City office, said Monday that the
agency is taking the investigation into the fire
at the Islamic Society of Joplin very seriously.
He says the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol
Tobacco and Firearms together have about 30
investigators working to determine the cause.
Jasper County officials say patrols at the
Masjid had been stepped up since a July 4 fire
at the Masjid was determined to be arson. The
FBI has released a video of a man appearing
to set the July 4 fire and is offering a $15,000
reward in that case.
The sheriff's department said the building was
a total loss. No injuries were reported and no
charges have been filed.
Imam Lahmuddin, who leads the mosque and
was in the building until late Sunday, said he
was "sad and shocked" about the fire.
"I'm still in front of the building looking at the
damage and not hi ng can be saved, "

Monday. "But since we are people of faith we
just can remember that this is a thing that
happened because God let it happen, and we
have to be patient, particularly in the month of
Ramadan, control our emotions, our anger."
A Washi ngton-based Musl i m ci vi l ri ghts
organization meanwhile called for more police
protection at mosques and other houses of
worship following the Joplin fire and a deadly
attack at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. The
Council on American-Islamic Relations also
offered a $10,000 reward for i nformation
leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever
started the mosque fire.
About 50 families belong to the Islamic Society
of Joplin, which opened in 2007 as a Masjid
and communi t y cent er. The FBI l ed an
investigation in 2008 when the Masjid's sign
was torched. That cri me al so remai ned
unsolved.
Lahmuddin, who has lived in Joplin for about
four years, said several people were at the
center l ate Sunday. He sai d despi te the
attacks, the center' s members have good
rel at i onshi ps wi t h r esi dent s and ot her
churches. He said many are doctors at area
hospitals.
On Sunday, a gunman killed six people at a
Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee. The
imam said it was a cause of great concern that
both faiths had seemingly come under attack.
"I heard that yesterday, and this morning we
see this happen in our place," he said. "We
are more fortunate that no one here got hurt in
this incident."
"We've been constantly under attack," said
former Masjid board member Navid Zaidi, 47.
"Our sign has been burnt ... Our mailbox was
smashed multiple times. We had bullets shot
at our sign."
Zaidi also complained that no suspects have
been caught in the month since the July 4
attack. "I don't recall in my 27 years in the US,
ever seeing perpetrators apprehended," he
said.
"We hope these are isol ated events, but
suddenly they have become more regular and
bolder," Zaidi added.

Senator Faisal Raza Abidi
Lost Asif Zardari Trust
ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Peoples Party
dissociated itself from the anti-judiciary rhetoric
of its firebrand Senator Syed Faisal Raza Abidi
and issued a notice to him on Monday for
violating party discipline. PPP also closed the
Presidency door on Abidi and steped down
him as PPP core committee.
Mr Abidi had made some serious allegations
against judges at a press conference at PPPs
central secretariat on Sunday.
Besides facing a possible disciplinary action
from the party, Senator Abidi could also face a
serious situation because lawyer Tariq Asad
has filed a petition in the Supreme Court
against him for his alleged contemptuous
remarks.
The notice gives 10 days to the senator, who
resigned last month as PPPs Karachi division
president for unexplained reasons, to give a
written reply and explain his position.
Sources in the party disclosed that Mr Abidi
who had been vigorously defending the PPP
and President Asif Ali Zardari in TV talk shows
for three years had lost the trust of his boss
af t er devel opi ng di f f er ences wi t h t he
presidents sister Faryal Talpur who is not only
the chief of PPPs womens wing but is said to
be practically running the affairs of the party,
particularly in Sindh.

Mass Shooting in the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin
6 Innocent Killed, 3 Injured
OAK CREEK - A mass shooting took place in
the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. The incident
occurred on Sunday morning in Oak Creek.
Seven people were killed, including a gunman.
Four of the dead were inside the temple, while
three were outside. According to police, an
officer was shot multiple times by the gunman.
Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said the
t empl e shoot i ng i s bei ng t r eat ed as a
"domestic-type terrorist incident," and that the
FBI is handling the criminal investigation.
The gunman who ki l l ed si x peopl e at a
Wi sconsi n Si kh t empl e was a US Army
veteran, military sources said on Monday, and
a monitor of extremists said he had links to
hate groups. A l aw enforcement source
identified the tall, bald, white gunman as Wade
Michael Page, 40. The US military sources
said Page had been discharged from the Army
in 1998 for "patterns of misconduct" and had
been cited for being drunk on duty.

people of Oak Creek must know that the
American people have them in our thoughts
and prayers, and our hearts go out to the
families and friends of those who were killed
and wounded. My Administration will provide
whatever support is necessary to the officials
who are responding to this tragic shooting and
moving forward with an investigation. As we
mourn this loss which took place at a house of
worship, we are reminded how much our
country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a
part of our broader American family."

shooting, he said, "Ann and I extend our
thoughts and prayers to the victims of the
shooting in Wisconsin. This was a senseless
act of violence and a tragedy that should never

Meanwhile , Dr. Gopal Singh Uppal, issued a
statment on behalf of the Sikh Community of
t he capi t al regi on. He sai d , The Si kh
community of the capital region expresses it's
grief and shock over the senseless shooting
tragedy at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek,
Wisconson. We are terribly saddened by the
fact that i nnocent worshi ppers and Law
Enforcement official s were killed or injured by
the senseless violence. He said, Sikhism is a
peaceful religion, which emphasizes universal
brotherhood, equality, tolerance and selfless
service towards one's community.
The Sikh families and worshippers in the
Albany Capital region will continue to practice
these sacred beliefs as we move forward, he
added in the statement.
The World Sikh Council - America Region
(WSC-AR), offers its condolences and support
t o t he vi ct i ms, t hei r f ami l i es, t he l aw
enforcement agencies and the surrounding
community. The council urge all to pray for the
victims, their families and friends, and the
surrounding community.
