Racist slur or army banter? What the soldiers say
In mess halls and parade squares
across the country, Prince Harry's
comments were being chewed over
yesterday. As they pondered the media
furore, some insisted his comments
pointed to a wider problem of racism in the
armed forces, but others were quick to
come to his defence, claiming his critics
had little or no understanding of army life.
However, no one with first-hand
experience of the British military seemed
remotely surprised that the 24-year-old,
who is third in line to the throne, had
chosen the term Paki to describe a fellow
soldier.
Nabs, who spent 11 years in the
British army, described the interest in
Prince Harry's comments as "pure
nonsense".
"When I joined the army my first
nickname was 'Private foreign bollocks',
and it was a relief when people started
calling me that because I knew that it
meant I had been accepted," said the 38-
year-old British Muslim, whose family
originate from Oman.
"It is the sort of thing that is said
with good humour among friends and in
that context it is something that we can all
take it. What counts in the army is that you
are good at your job. If you are then you
will get a bit of banter but you will also get
respect. If you are not any good people will
pick on whatever they can, whether that is
that you are ginger or Irish or a woman."
Nabs, who did not want to reveal
his full identity, said he agreed with Patrick
Mercer, the former Tory frontbench
spokesman, who stood down after claiming
that being called a "black bastard" was part
and parcel of life in the armed forces for
ethnic minorities.
"I have been called a 'spear
chucker' and a black this or that but it didn't
worry me in the slightest because it is just
a bit of banter that you give and take ...
What people should be more concerned
about is those people in the army who
don't say anything to your face but are
seriously racist behind your back. It is
when you find yourself getting all the
crappy assignments or failing tests that
you know you have passed that racism
becomes a much more serious problem."
But another Muslim who served in
the army, Nassir Khan, dismissed the idea
that calling someone a "Paki" had anything
to do with banter. "This is an incredibly
insulting term, it's the sort of thing people
from the National Front or Combat 18 say
before attacking Asian families and I don't
understand why, just because he is third in
line to the throne and in the army, we are
supposed to accept it."
Khan, who served in the army
from 1988 to 1999 before being forced to
retire through injury, said he was regularly

"When I took the oath of
allegiance the man said to me, here's the
king's shilling for a cup of tea and a
chapati, and although that might sound
humorous it was just the start of the racism
I experienced." He added that he had
received death threats and had been

"I was told by other soldiers when
I was serving in the 1991 Gulf war that I
was on the wrong side and to watch my
back because they would shoot me if they
got a chance.
"I got death threats through the
post saying if I returned to work I would be
killed and I was also badly beaten up by

Heavy rains covering much
of Bali's southern regions that began
on Saturday, January 10, 2009, have
caused localized flooding in a
number of areas, including Kuta,

the Bali Post, several residential

buildings were isolated and partially
submerged by the flooding, with
rubber boats used to evacuate local
residents to higher ground.
The worst flooding was in
areas surrounding the Tukad Mati
river which overflowed its banks,

revealed how staff at a NSW
hospital left her to miscarry and
"dispose" of the 14-week-old fetus
in a waiting room toilet.
Fighting back tears, mother
of two Jodie Whiteside said yesterday
that staff were "blase" when she
arrived at Maitland Hospital on
December 20, and gave her no
choice but to expel the fetus alone in
a public ladies' room cubicle, and
clean up the mess.
Her treatment has been
condemned as "an absolute
disgrace" by maternity advocates.
The state Opposition has
also demanded to know why the
hospital did not immediately transfer
the haemorrhaging woman to the
maternity unit -- as recommended by
the 2007 investigation into a similar
case.

"All I know is I gave birth to the child,
I had it in my hand, and I was given
no other option.

and the major airlines to evacuate
stranded tourists from flood-
ravaged Fiji.

How Hannah, 13, fought off a shark
Syb Mundy, who saved his teenage
cousin Hannah Mighall from the
jaws of a shark, has shrugged off
the tag of "hero".
Mr Mundy, 33, said Hannah,
13, was the one who deserved
accolades for her bravery.
Mr Mundy was surfing with
Hannah at Binalong Bay, near St
Helens, in Tasmania's north-east,
yesterday afternoon when a five-
metre great white latched onto her
leg.
The shark dragged her under
the water twice before her cousin
reached her on his surfboard and hit it
on the head.
Mr Mundy was still in a state
of disbelief when he spoke at the St
Helens District Hospital in Tasmania,
describing graphically how a casual
surf at Binalong Bay almost ended in
tragedy.
"We were just surfing and she
was probably five or 10 metres out in
front of me," he said.
"The next thing I know she
screamed and disappeared under the
water.
"She came up and was
fighting the shark and hitting it and
screaming: 'Help me, help me, help
me.' We didn't see it coming.
"It dragged her around a bit
and then she went down and under
again. I was really worried. There was
blood all in the water.
"It brought her up to the top
again and I paddled over to her and
tried to push it with the board and tried
to hit it but I don't think it felt it really. It

"Hannah kept a really good
head on her - kept it together.
"It grabbed her surfboard and
dragged that under and she still had
her leg rope on and it dragged her
under again.
"The shark started circling us
and coming up underneath us and
when it did that we stopped and turned
to face it so we could push it out of the
way or poke it in the eye or something.
"She kept it together. There
was blood everywhere and I didn't
know whether it was going to try and
bite her again.
"Then a wave came along and
I said 'No matter how weak you are, try
and hang on. This wave is going to
save our lives.'
"And then we caught that wave
to the beach, dragged her up on the
beach and saw her leg had been
mauled.
"It was pretty deep, in behind
her knee was deep. You could almost
see the bone. It was pretty horrible
really.
"We were lucky the water was
cold. It slowed her heart rate so when
we pulled her out of the water the leg
wasn't spurting blood everywhere.
"There happened to be a
doctor and a nurse on the beach. We
got a leg rope ... and wrapped it around
and then wrapped some towels around
to try and slow the blood down. We got
a mobile phone and rang the
ambulance.
"I just think it was meant to
happen for a reason. I'm blessed.
"She was on the beach and
whingeing about the pain. I said: 'You
should be laughing that you're alive,
don't whinge about the pain.'

"When she came up I said: 'Try
to get your leg rope off, try and get your
leg rope off', and I was trying to look for
the shark because it disappeared and all
I could see was blood in the water.
"The leg rope is about six foot
[1.8 metres] long, but then it broke and
she popped up and I said: 'Jump on my
back.'
"She jumped on my back and
we started paddling to the beach and I
said 'Don't let go, whatever you do don't
let go.' "
Mr Mundy said hitting the shark
on the head "was like hitting a brick wall
- it was that dense".
"I didn't have a tape to measure
it but it was huge. It was easily the
length of a car.
Third shark attack feared in two days in Australia

Whirlwind Warner a smash hit
WHEN David Warner walked out
on to the MCG to bat last night,
his anonymity was evident.
The scoreboard operator's
inability to find a picture to
accompany his brief domestic
career statistics.
But it is unlikely that any of
the 62,148 that stood as one to
applaud his exit at 8.38pm, after a
staggering innings of 89 runs from
just 43 balls, will ever forget the
dashing left-hander's remarkable
Australian debut.
That Australia defeated
South Africa by 52 runs, despite
another outstanding MCG effort
from young Protea Jean-Paul
Duminy, is a sideshow to Warner's
phenomenal maiden international
innings.
The MCG has, by the
nature of the events it hosts, been
the scene of some of Australia's
most memorable sporting
moments.
Where Warner's blazing
innings ranks among the hundreds
of stories is a matter of conjecture,
particularly given this shortened
variation of cricket is still in its
infancy. But one thing is certain
according to former Australia
captain Mark Taylor.
Warner's innings, which
included seven fours and six
massive sixes, is certain to inspire
the next generation of fans.
"It is the exhuberance of
youth that allows you to play that

"It was almost as if he
thought, 'Well, that is as bad as
I'm going to hit them, wait until I
hit a few in the middle'," Taylor
said.
While Warner is apparently
adept at batting with both sides of
his body, last night's assault was a
left-handed demolition, with not
one South African bowler spared
the southpaw's king-hit.
Ntini, who passed Malcolm
Marshall on the all-time Test
wicket-takers list in the Boxing
Day Test, felt Warner's wrath in
the third over of the night when
blasted for consecutive sixes, the
first a hoick off a good length over
deep mid-wicket, the second a
more conventional pull shot.
Dale Steyn, the hero of the
Boxing Day Test and arguably the
world's best bowler, was not
immune as Warner raced to the
second-fastest 50, off 19 balls, in
international Twenty20
competition.
The South African looked
on in amazement as Warner used
Steyn's pace to steer a ball
behind square into the stands.
There was little fancy
about the six off Steyn's next ball,
just brutish strength as he clubbed
a mid-track delivery about eight
rows back into the crowd over
mid-on.
Not that Steyn should be
ashamed, for Warner walloped a
Jaques Kallis delivery even further
back when he pulled a ball so
high it seemed for a minute it
might exit the stadium.
Fanciful, perhaps, but it
was that sort of innings.
"It can't believe it. It's
unreal," Warner told the Nine
Network.
"I went out there and

rhythm to help jump-start a stopped
heart.
And in a small but intriguing
study from the University of Illinois
medical school, doctors and students
maintained close to the ideal number
of chest compressions doing
cardiopulmonary resuscitation while
listening to the catchy tune from the
1977 movie Saturday Night Fever.
The American Heart
Association recommends 100 chest
compressions per minute, far more
than most people realise, study author
Dr David Matlock said yesterday.
And while CPR can triple
cardiac arrest survival rates when
properly performed, many people
hesitate to do it because they're not
sure about keeping the proper rhythm,
Matlock said.
He found that Stayin' Alive,
which has a way of getting stuck in
your head, can help with that.
His study involved 15 students
and doctors and had two parts. First
they did CPR on mannequins while
listening to the song on iPods. They
were asked to time chest
compressions with the song's beat.
