Lesson Structure:

1. Ask about some rules regarding time in America. What about rules in other countries? 2. Distribute Story: Next, I will read the story to the entire group one time. Then, I will pass out copies of the story, and allow the students to read one or two sentences from the story out loud to the group, in round-robin form. Discussion will follow, since there are many interesting topics in this story.

3. Distribute Vocabulary Expansion: Discuss vocabulary examples as well as the associated synonyms. Have students pair off and create a sentence using each BOLD word. 4. Distribute "Rules about Time" worksheet: Pair off students and let them create two rules on being "on time" as well as two "unspoken" rules. The last True/False section of this worksheet is to be done independently. When complete, each student takes turn openly reading their answers and telling us why they said true or false. 5. Distribute Comprehension Worksheet: This last worksheet reinforces the subject matter covered in the reading and vocabulary assignments. It is to be collaborated upon in pairs, upon which, time permitting, students will review each other's papers. Evaluation: The comprehension worksheet covers the use of prefixes as encompassed within the "Rules about Time" story, as well as vocabulary prefixes. There is no score for this lesson, only an overview of comprehension as evidenced by the worksheet completion. Students will be given the homework assignment to write two sentences using each of the new vocabulary introduced in this lesson.

These rules are usually unspoken, but everybody knows them. In some countries such as the United States, England, and Canada, punctuality is an unspoken rule. It is important to be on time, especially in business. People usually arrive a little early for business appointments. Business meetings often have strict beginning and ending times. When you are late, other people might think you are rude, disorganized, or irresponsible.

These countries also have cultural rules about time in social situations. For example, when an invitation for dinner says 6:00 pm, it is impolite to arrive more than five or ten minutes late. On the other hand, when the invitation is for a cocktail party from 6:00 to 8:00 or a reception from 3:30 to 5:30, you can arrive anytime between those hours. For public events with specific starting times - movies, concerts, and plays - you should arrive a few minutes before the event begins. In fact, some theaters do not allow people to enter if they arrive after the event has started. Other cultures have different rules about time. In Brazil, it is not unusual for guests to arrive an hour or two after a social event begins. In the Philippines, it is not uncommon for people to miss scheduled events - a class or an appointment - to meet a friend at the airport. Many Filipinos believe that relationships with people are more important than keeping a schedule. Create an example sentence using the bold vocabulary unspoken = (understood, assumed) o It is understood that children love to watch cartoons. o It is assumed that candy is bad for our teeth. o ____________________________________________ disorganized = (confused, messy) o My daughter is so confused, she can't find her glasses. o My friend's car is so messy, he can't find the brakes. o ____________________________________________ irresponsible = (careless, undependable) o That employee is careless. o That customer is undependable. o ____________________________________________ impolite = (rude, disrespectful) o That employee is too rude! o You should not be disrespectful to anyone. o ____________________________________________ uncommon = (rare, unusual) o That coin is very rare. o It is unusual to find hard working employees. o _____________________________________ RULES ABOUT TIME Can you think of some rules about time? 1.
