Thursday, August 18, 2011

ANSWER CHRONOLOGICALLY ON A CLEAN SHEET OF PAPER. KEEP YOUR SOLUTIONS NEAT AND UNDERSTANDABLE. SPACE SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE.

PROBLEM 1: average speed

A car must be driven a distance of 120.0 km in 2.5 h. During the rst 1.5 h the average speed was 70 km h-1. What must the average speed for the remainder of the journey be?

PROBLEM 2: averages still

A person walks a distance of 3.0 km due south and then a distance of 2.0 km due east. If the walk lasts for 3.0 h, nd (a) the average speed, and (b) the average velocity

PROBLEM 3: simple sketch graph

Draw the sketch-graph (no need for numbers) for the displacement-time graph for an object moving in a straight line whose velocity-time graph is given below. Assume the displacement is initially zero. v

PROBLEM 4: detailed graphs

An object moving in a straight line according to the v-t graph below has an initial displacement of 8.00 m. (a) What is the displacement after 8.00 s? (b) What is the displacement after 12.0 s? (c) What is the average speed and average velocity for this motion?

PROBLEM 5: relative velocity

Two cars are moving on the same straight-line road. Car A moves to the right at velocity 80 km h-1 and car B moves at 50 km h-1 to the left. Both vehicles are measured by an observer at rest on the road. (a) Find the relative velocity of car B with respect to car A. (b) Find the relative velocity of car A with respect to car B.

PROBLEM 6: more relative velocity

A cyclist named Marc moves with a speed 3.0 m s-1 to the left (wrt the road). A second cyclist, Kenji, moves on the same straight-line path as Marc with a relative velocity of 1.0 m s-1 wrt Marc. (a) What is the velocity of Kenji wrt the road? (b) A third cyclist, Tomi, has a relative velocity with respect to Marc of -2.0 m s-1. What is Tomis velocity wrt the road?

PROBLEM 7: special hl challenge

A particle of dust is bombarded wby air molecules and follows a zigzag path at constant speed v. (a) Assuming each step has a length d, nd the distance travelled by the dust particle in time t. (b) What is the length of the displacement vector after N steps where N is large? Assume that each step is taken in a random direction on the plane.
(This problem assumes that you are familiar with the scalar product of two vectors. Look it up.)

PROBLEM 8: taking off

A plane starting from rest takes 15.0 s to take off after speeding over a distance of 450.0 m on the runway with constant acceleration. With what velocity does it take off?

PROBLEM 9: time to accelerate

A body has an initial velocity of 3.0 m s-1 and after travelling 24 m the velocity becomes 13 m s-1. How long does this take?

PROBLEM 10: reaction time

A car is travelling at 40.0 m s-1. The driver sees an emergency ahead and 0.50 s later slams on the brakes. The acceleration of the car is -4 m s-2. (a) What distance will the car travel before it stops? (b) If the driver was able to apply the brakes instantaneously without a reaction time, over what distance would the car stop? (c) Calculate the difference in your answers to (a) and (b). (d) Assume now that the car was traveling at 30.0 m s-1 instead. Without performing any calculations, would the answer to (c) now be less than, equal to, or larger than before? Explain your answer.

PROBLEM 11: thrown ball

For this problem, take acceleration due to gravity to be 10.0 m s-2.

A ball is thrown upwards with a speed of 24.0 m s-1. (a) When is the velocity of the ball 12.0 m s-1? (b) When is the velocity of the ball -12.0 m s-1? (c) What is the displacement of the ball at those times? (d) What is the velocity of the ball 1.50 s after launch? (e) What is the maximum height reached by the ball?

PROBLEM 12: still a thrown thingy

For this problem, take acceleration due to gravity to be 10.0 m s-2.

A rock is thrown vertically down from the roof of a 25.0 m high building with a speed of 5.0 m s-1. (a) When does the rock hit the ground? (b) With what speed does it hit the ground?

PROBLEM 13: dont drop rocks

For this problem, take acceleration due to gravity to be 10.0 m s-2.

A building window is 1.50 m high from sill to sill, 20.0 m from the ground. A stone falling from the roof passes the top of the window with a speed of 3.00 m s-1. (a) When will it pass the bottom of the window? (b) When will it hit the ground? (c) How high is the building? (d) At what velocity would the rock hit an unfortunate passer-by who is 1.40 m tall?
