PREPARATIONS: PO – (5, 7.5, 10)mg oxycodone & 325 mg acetaminophen tablets

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS: active against moderate to moderately severe pain. Appears to be more effective in relief of acute
than long-standing pain

USES: moderate to moderately severe pain. Relieve post-op, postextractional, postpartum pain.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: alcohol and CNS depressants add to CNS depressant activity

HERBAL INTERACTIONS: St. John’s Wort may increase sedation

5. Nursing Implications & teaching.

IMPLICATION:
• Monitor pts response closely
• Consult Dr if nausea persists after first few days
• Light-headedness, dizziness, sedation or fainting is more prominent in ambulatory pts, than non-ambulatory, may be
alleviated if pt lies down
• Potential for drug abuse is high, evaluate pt’s continued need for oxycodone preps.
• Check hepatic and hematologic status periodically in pts on high dosage
• Serious overdose of oxycodone preps presents problems associated with narcotic overdose

TEACHING:
• May be habit forming
• Avoid potentially hazardous activities while using this med
• Do not drink alcohol while taking this med, increases risk of liver damage
• Check with Dr before taking OTC drugs for colds, stomach distress, allergies, insomnia or pain
• Inform surgeon or dentist you are taking this med before any surgical procedures are done
