Painting to Music Students will create a visual response to the music they hear.

They will be asked to focus on color, line, shape, rhythm, movement and pattern. They will explore various methods and techniques with tempera paint in their process. They will examine the relationship between sound and image as well as emotional and subjective associations. They will examine works of art by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Vincent Van Gogh and Max Weber. My Neighborhood collage Students will create a mixed media piece that depicts the sounds and images of their neighborhood. They will explore the intuitive associations of sound, color and texture. Images from magazines and newspapers will be supplied for the project. Students will learn about the art of Romare Bearden, texture, symbols, collage and various ways to portray depth. Underwater Sea Creatures Students will create their own section of an underwater sea collage that will later be assembled together with the whole group to create one large piece. Images of sea life will be drawn, painted and collaged. Students will learn about various sea life, the sounds of the sea, paper murals, color theory, shapes and patterns. Art Journal Making Students will create their own art sketchbooks in which they can use in class and at home. They will learn basic bookbinding techniques and design their own covers using various mediums and materials. Mask Making Students will create their own unique masks using various materials and found objects. They will look at different kinds of masks from all around the world, examining how masks were made, their purposes, who wore them and how they can create their own. Universal symbols and personal symbols will be discussed. Body Self-Portraits Students will create an action pose while lying on the ground on brown craft paper. Their silhouette will be formed by tracing their entire body. Students will use a variety of marks and materials to depict details and express what they want the viewer to know about themselves. Printmaking Students will learn how printmaking (mono printing) is a means for expression of ideas and experiences. Students will explore various types of marks made by different sized brushes, hands, found objects, fruits, vegetables, etc. Students will also become aware of various colors that are produced as a result of the mixing of certain colors.

Paper City Sculptures Students will create their own unique city in paper. It can be inspired by past travels or imaginative. Books about cities will be examined and discussed. Painting- Insects Students will be shown various picture books on insects. They will explore unique movements and gestures of insects by imitation. They will then explore the insects even further by painting them. They will also be able to create their own unique fantastical insect paired with a story. Puppet Making Students will pick an animal that best describes them. Students will discover various techniques in creating three-dimensionality using only paper. They will be introduced to various techniques of fastening paper together (cutting slits and sliding, overlapping, stapling, gluing, folding, tying, weaving, etc.) and additive and subtractive methods of design (folding and cutting out shapes, curling, layering to create mass or texture, etc). Pen and Ink Students will transform an instrument of their choice or depict visually the sounds that are coming out of the instrument- interpretation of sound. Surrealism will be examined and discussed. Landscape Collages Students will create a portrait of a place that has personal significance incorporating symbols. A few poems about different kinds of places will be read and discussed for inspiration. Air/ land /Sea Paintings What can you find in the air? What can you find on land? What can you find in the sea? Students will explore animals, insects, trees, flowers, buildings, vehicles, etc. found in either air, land or sea on paper. Memory Boxes Students will gather all inspiring memories and visualize it on paper using mixed media. They will then incorporate it into a unique box that they will create out of cardboard and other materials where meaningful mementos can be placed. Jungle Collage Students will work together to create a jungle with imaginative and unique creatures using various materials. Animal Sculptures

Students will create large sculptural animals out of things found in nature. Recycled Colorful Picture Frames Students will create mosaic frames out of old greeting cards, plastic club cards, paint chips, etc. Painting Seasons Students will look at various artworks that depict, are inspired by and or express the feeling or mood of the four seasons. We will discuss color and how it can be used to portray certain feelings that are felt during specific months of the year. Students will mix colors and learn different applications.
