considered for promotion to division manager.he was a strong personality,he ran a tight shop clearly discharged his responsibility and was known as a good manager. Upon close inquiry,it became clear that this candidaate was carrying all his section heads.they were weak yes jpeople and none was remotely able to succeed the department manager. Harry was not appointed and susan leigh the CEO was explanining to him why he was passed over. Harry she said you should know that we all wanted nothing but success for you.uar well thought of among all the people Ive talked to,and every pne wanted to see you get the chance
at divison management. This did not make the decision any easier for me,but O had other consideration to ponder.basically, I was worried about the big risk of failure that you would run. In your present possition you have carried the total load. I think this means thatt if you headed a business unit you would try to do the same thing,and you dwould surely fail and perhaps have a breakdown in health . since you did nor develop subordinate managers to carry the departmental load, I dont think you would or could use use department managers jproperly. Theb there is the problem of manager succession. We dont have any body to take your old job, and you have not prepared any of your subordinates to do so, I am afraid that the same thibg wouls happen ;at the bussebess level and we just cannot affford to take that kind of risk. I really dont know what the future holds for you. You are now 40 years of age. I dont think it is really possible for you to change your managing style. May be you can but I feel that at the first sign of pressure, you would revent to doing all the managing yourself. Well, Susan,replied Harry,I can certainly see the problem from your point of view.
