Curriculum connections VELS Level 3 At Level 3, students develop fraction notation and compare simple common fractions such as 3/4 > 2/3 using physical models. Australian Curriculum Year 3 Model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole (ACMNA058). Australian Curriculum Year 4 Investigate equivalent fractions used in contexts (ACMNA077) Learner considerations This class is a composite Year 3 and 4 class: eight Year 3 and sixteen Year 4 students. There is a wide range of levels in the class, so allowance needs to be made for children who need extra help and explanations, and others who may need extension activities. Intended Learning Outcomes (Key Knowledge and Skills students should achieve in the lesson taken from relevant curriculum documents.) Develop students understanding of fractions and compare simple fractions. Introduce equivalent fractions. Start to compare fractions and their relative size. Check students are familiar with terms one quarter, one fourth, one fifth. This lesson would be the first in a series of three or four. Preparation/Resources Material for interactive whiteboard prepared Worksheets: How Much is Shaded copied. Extension activity worksheet Pizza Orders and Fractions Worksheets copied for higher level children. Stopwatch for timekeeper. Cut coloured A3 paper into thirds. Behaviour Management Remind class at the start (and during if necessary) each activity what the correct voice level should be (silent voice, partner voice or no voice!). Make sure children raise hands when they can answer a question, no calling out and no hands up while someone else is talking. Ordered moving from carpet area to desks. Move in groups rather than all at once.

Lesson Structure We will begin the class with a game and discussing the students knowledge of fractions. Can anyone explain what a fraction is? Does anyone know what a denominator is? A numerator? Coordinates and Fractions Game (Maths Worksheets: teachingimage.com). Use of physical models. Put diagram sheet up onto interactive whiteboard. Ask children to find the coordinates (using the grid, ie answer may be G5) for different fractions as shown on the pizzas, ie who can see the pizza with one quarter shaded?. Some of the higher level students may be able to answer decimal or percentage related questions, ie which pizza is 75% shaded? Then show the class some different fractions of various geometric shapes (and sizes) and ask them to put up their hands if they can tell me what the fraction is. Show shading of various shapes representing , , 1/3, 1/5. Are there any questions? 1015 minutes

How Much is Shaded. Next, return to desks and ask children to complete as much as they can of the How Much is Shaded worksheet (Maths Worksheets: teachingimage.com) worksheets. Make sure they understand that they dont have to do ALL of them, just skip them if they are stuck and go to the next one. Go back and have another go at the end if there is time. Its not a competition and it is Individual work, what voice do we use for that?! Give a stopwatch to a timekeeper. Remind children to put their names and the date on their work. Early finishers can do the Pizza Orders (http://math.about.com) worksheet and colour in. Adjust stopwatch if most children need a bit more time. When timekeeper announces time is up, remind children again to make sure their names are on the sheets and ask them to bring them to me, sit down on the mat again quietly. 1015 minutes Paper strip fractions. Use a coloured paper strip to demonstrate and ask children questions. Compare and discuss , , 2/4, 3/4 (who can tell me the equivalent fraction for 2/4? What about 4/4?). Look at the paper folds and discuss how many fold lines there are, and how many parts? Then fold another strip into eighths, discuss. Fold another into thirds and sixths (s bend then adjust). Discuss equivalent fractions using the paper strips. Use the strips to show skip counting (ie quarter, half, three quarters, whole). (10 mins) Now ask children to return to desks and do the following activity in their numeracy book: Copy down these counting sequences. Write down the counting sequence, and predict the next four numbers in the sequence. 1/3, 2/3, 1, 1 1/3, 1 2/3, 2, 2 1/3, 2 2/3, 3 Do the first one on the whiteboard with the children. Then they follow up in workbooks with quarters and fifths. Children needing more challenge can complete sequences using sixths, sevenths, eighths. (10 mins) Finish up by checking progress in workbooks and telling children we will continue with some fraction work tomorrow. Can anyone suggest some new words to be added to the Word Board? Any questions? Assessment/Checking for Understanding Observe students and note common errors and ease that each student is completing the tasks. Take note of questions asked at the end of each step of the lesson sequence. Collect samples of How Much is Shaded and Counting Sequences work and evaluate students understanding. Evaluation of own teaching effectiveness I havent taught this class yet, please see my observation of one of my mentor teachers classes.
