DEATH OF JAMAICAN IN LOCK UP OVERSEAS

(MFA&FT Kingston: September11, 2012)

On September 6, 2012, the Ministry was informed by the Jamaican High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago of the untimely passing of 25 year old Jamaican Deshawn George Campbell, of a St. Andrew address. Mr. Campbell had been serving a three (3) sentence at HMP Dodds in Barbados having been convicted on August 10 2011 for the possession, importation and trafficking of marijuana. Upon receipt of this information, the Foreign Ministry made contact with the family of the deceased notified them of this unfortunate event and expressed condolences. During this process it was revealed that the prison officials had already informed the family. The Ministry provided some basic guidance on options which are available for the retrieval of the remains and anticipates that the family of the deceased will determine how they will proceed. Sources have revealed that Campbell had been complaining of feeling ill since July and was given painkillers in the prison. According to information received, the deceased was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth

Hospital on Monday, September 3, after his condition had deteriorated significantly. A request for an autopsy and a detailed report of the circumstances leading to the passing of Mr. Campbell has been requested from the relevant authorities in Barbados. The Jamaican High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago will continue to monitor the situation to include follow up on the request for the autopsy results for Mr. Campbell.
