Assembly Member Kellners Statement on Taxi & Limousine Commission Vote to Approve the Taxi of Tomorrow
TLC votes 5-2 to approve the Nissan NV-200 despite serious objections that it violates the Americans with Disabilities Act
New York, NY Assembly Member Micah Z. Kellner (D-Upper East Side/Yorkville/Roosevelt Island) released the following statement today in response to vote in favor of the Taxi of Tomorrow by the Taxi & Limousine Commission: Im disappointed that with todays vote for the so-called Taxi of Tomorrow, the City has taken a giant step backwards when it comes to making our taxi fleet accessible and environmentally friendly. This is an irresponsible choice and I am outraged that the disabled community will continue to be relegated to second class status when it comes to getting around New York like everyone else. By not selecting an accessible vehicle, the Commissioners may have made the City vulnerable to legal challenges, expensive retrofits or the new vehicles being taken off the road altogether. These expenses could have a negative impact on the Citys finances for decades to come. This morning, Assembly Member Kellner and NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio sent a letter to the TLC Commissioners urging them to vote down the Taxi of Tomorrow because it violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. Their joint release (with the letter included) can be found here. ***
