The UNESCO network of associated libraries (UNAL) will be further expanded and strengthened cooperation, particularly, in the use

of new information and communication technologies, between UNAL and UNESCO clubs In 1989-99 UNESCO also worked for the

development of informatics and telematic applications, building upon the results already

obtained in the implementation of selected interdisciplinary pilot projects (development of

appropriate telematic applications: use of interactive television technology for educational applications in developing countries. A new emphasis put on providing an active and effective technological support for development projects in all UNESCOs field of competence. The main lines of action intended are: (1) Expanding access to global information flows (2) Electronic networks for increased cooperation in science, education and culture (3) Virtual learning communities and virtual laboratory applications

(4) training of computer specialists, trainers and users. Thus within the basic framework of freedom of expression and freedom of free flow of information, UNESCO is engaged the world over in promoting the educational, cultural and developmental dimensions.
