PSYCHOCENTRIC & ALLOCENTRIC


PSYCHOCENTRIC - A psychological term for a person who prefers the familiar and is not open to new experiences. Psychocentric travelers are said to prefer trips close to home and to seek familiar environments, such as hotel chains with which they are comfortable, when traveling. Conservative, inhibited and unadventurous Return to familiar destinations Want to relax Expect type of food and activity Prefer heavily structured itinerary Safety and security are important

ALLOCENTRIC - Outwardly focused, interested in others, not egocentric. Allocentric travelers are said to be drawn to adventure travel. Seek new experiences and adventures Outgoing and self-confident Enjoy meeting people from different cultures Explore and area Make own travel arrangements Choose activities and tourist attractions

MID-CENTRIC TYPE - tourists who go to places that have been popularized by the allocentric, they are not so adventurous, neither are they afraid Between allocentric and psychocentric Not particularly adventurous

THE ORGANISED MASS TOURIST: - Least adventurous - Spend most of their time in their comfortable similar living environment throughout their trip - The literary is decided in advance - Attractions are guided and well fixed - Tourist have no decisions of their trip THE INDIVIDUAL MASS TOURIST: - Similar to the organised mass tourist - The tour is not entirely fixed - Have certain control over their time and itinerary - But all the major arrangements are still made throughout travel agencies

THE EXPLORER: - Arrange their trips alone - Go somewhere unusual - Look for comfortable accommodation and reliable transportation - Retain some of the basic routines and comforts of their native way of life - Try to mix with local people and speak their language THE DRIFTER: - Go further away from the similar environment living when traveling - Keep away from the accustomed way of life in home countries - No fixed itinerary - Plan trips wholly on their own - Live with local people - Often take odd-jobs to keep themselves going
