Farrukhabad Potato was stored of over capacity (115 %).

. Apart from the cold storage farmers have stored it to their own field. Till date only 20-25 % of the stock has been released, out of the remaining 25-30 % can be consider as seed. So 50-55% of the potato are still at the cold storages and have to be disposed up to mid-Sep. (Store maintenance and preparation for the new crops) Demand is dull as outputs from the most of the producing regions were very good. N.E states major demand centers of U.P potato, receiving supplies from W.B. Due to the ample availability and smooth supply in the market no pressure could be created on the price of the potato. Traders are selling potatoes at least margin or cost to cost basis. Stockiest farmers have gained good holding capacity as their groundnut and maize crops have given very good return, so there is no urgent capital requirement to be fulfilled by selling potatoes for them. Farmers perception on the market during last two years, when potato prices were low initially but increased substantially on later period, have also restricting them to release stocks from their end. During the peak storage time (Feb), due to the intentionally short supply by the farmers prices were at Rs 300-350 quintal for the traders. Currently faq potatoes are sold at Rs 400-450 quintal and 3797 is sold at Rs 550600/q. Agra cold storages should be cleared by august end, there going to be panic for the same. 25th Feb 2012 Production is estimated to be 20-25% less compare to last year. this is mainly due to lower yield. Farrukhabad almost 60% harvesting is done, Agra is just started and situation is not cleared yet. Most of the potato is going to store not for consumption from these areas. Currently the prices for new potato is 550 in farrukhabad and 600 in Agra. Cold storage charges have increased to Rs 150 per quintal. Size wise new potatoes are comparatively smaller.
