Cape Verde president to visit Yonkers before UN address

YONKERS -- The president of Cape Verde will be honored at City Hall before visiting two 9/11 memorials during a

swing through the city Wednesday. Jorge Carlos Fonseca leader of the Portuguese-speaking island nation of 567,000 people off the coast of Western Africa is in New York to address the United Nations 67th General Assembly Thursday. But first, he will be presented with a key to the city by Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Ceremonial Courtroom at 40 S. Broadway. After that, Fonseca is expected to pay homage to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks both at Conor Park and on the downtown waterfront. More than 2,000 Yonkers residents are of Cape Verde descent, according to Spanos office.
