GRAVESTONES OF KILCOMMON -

Kilcommon Graveyard.
Kilcommon graveyard is located in Ballybrogan townland in St. Johns parish in south Roscommon. The site has been of religious significance since at least the twelfth century and is listed in a taxation return for 1306. The church at Kilcommon is likely to have been a chapel-of-ease for the main church situated not far away at St. Johns. It was in use until the late 1590s. At some stage after the church fell out of use Kilcommon began to be used as a burial site. The earliest headstones date from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century though earlier burials without stone markers are distinctly probable. The five earliest headstones are for Dungon (1694), Eagan (1711), Dolin (1716), Conaghton and Geraghty (both 1716). Two hundred and seven headstones, dating from 1694 to 1955, were recorded by Jack Kilcline and members of St. Johns Parish Heritage Group in 1987 and 2004. In addition seventy-nine burials from between 1946 and 2000, mostly without headstones, are recorded in an official burial register for the graveyard. The current graveyard wall was built in the nineteenth century and the roadway leading there is known as corpse lane.
In July 2005 the graveyard was restored by members of St. Johns Parish Heritage Group and local families. Mass was celebrated there for the first time in living memory.
