ESTIMATION OF IODINE NUMBER IN ACTIVATED CARBON

Finely crush the activated carbon and pass thro 325 mesh. Take around 0.25 grams of sample add 10 ml of 5% HCl and just boil for two minutes in a iodine flash. Cool the sample add 100 ml of 0.1 N iodine close the flask with stopper and shake gently for 30 sec. Filter thro whatmman filter paper, discard initial filtrate and collect the filtrate. Take 50 ml of filtrate and titrate with 0.1N Thiosulphate. Smaple should be taken in such a way the normality of the filtrate around 0.05N to 0.004N normal.

Iodine number = [A - {(DF) (B) (S) }] /M

mg of iodine /gm of carbon

Where DF is the dilution factor = vol of iodine taken+ vol of 5% HCl added/ filtrate volume A = Normality of iodine *12693 B = Normaility of thio * 126.93 S = Thio volume M= wt of activated carbon taken

Value will be around 1000 to 1100 for fine grade carbon
