Hypothermia Overview

Hypothermia is when your body gets too cold to operate. Symptoms include: constant shivering, low energy, cold or pale skin, and hyperventilation. For the moderate sickness, the symptoms include: uncontrollable shivering, confusion and not able to think, difficulty moving, and slow breathing. Severe Hypothermia will lead to unconsciousness, shallow or no breathing, weak and no pulse and dilated pupils.

Diagnosing Procedure

A doctor will check your temperature


If you are below 98 Fahrenheit, then you have Hypothermia. Anywhere above that and you are either fine, or have Hyperthermia.

What systems will be affected?


Circulatory System Respiratory System The rest of your body too.
Your Cardiovascular system is also the way your body stays warm. If your blood gets cold, a doctor may need to rewarm your blood. Your body needs to be be around 98 degrees to function. If your temperature gets below that, then you have Hypothermia. If it gets above that, then you have Hyperthermia. Studies show that if you are cold, you dont breathe very much. little breathing may lead to Hypoxia (Not enough Oxygen getting to the brain). Your body needs both of these systems to function, so Hypothermia can be a deadly illness.

How can you prevent it?


Where warm, multi layered clothing and a hat in the cold. In the cold, change in to dry clothing if your clothes are wet. Find shelter if stuck in the cold.
