NEWS RELEASE:
For immediate publication/broadcast Mon., Dec. 3
Charleston Moves, the Lowcountry bicycle advocacy group, is urging the Town of Mount Pleasant to seek a Bicycle-Friendly designation from the League of American Bicyclists as it moves forward with a Bicycling and Walking Draft Master Plan. Nationwide, countless municipal officials have pursued the Bicycle-Friendly designation as a badge of progress toward the goal of providing for healthier lifestyles. Charleston Moves has been meeting with officials to provide detailed feedback as the plan is refined, and has commended the town for taking the initiative. The town is holding a drop-in session to solicit responses from residents and others who use its streets and roads. The session will be held at 5:30 to 7pm this Wed., Dec. 5 in Council chambers at the municipal complex, 100 Ann Edwards Lane. In its initial response to the draft plan, Charleston Moves pushed for a sharper, more comprehensive focus on total connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians. A bike lane doesnt do much for you if you cant safely get to your chosen destination said Tom Bradford, Charleston Moves Director. In the discussions, many specific street and road projects were discussed. The Town has taken an aggressive stance on doing its part to complete the Battery2Beach Route first proposed by Charleston Moves over two years ago. Mayor Billy Swails and Traffic Department Director Brad Morrison are delegates to the Battery2Beach Intergovernmental Task Force organized by Charleston Moves. Charleston Moves suggestions about the bike/ped plan cover numerous streets and roads, but key priorities are: making the Coleman Blvd. bike lane continuous over the length of the thoroughfare, reconfiguring the intersection of Coleman and McGrath-Darby (at the foot of the Ravenel Bridge Bike/Ped lane), and making both Rifle Range Road and Mathis Ferry Road safe for biking and walking. Both the Towns Draft Plan and Charleston Moves initial feedback letter are available at the Charleston Moves website, www.charlestonmoves.org.
