Lesson Plan
Topic: Art Haunted Tree Grade: 1 & 2 Period Time: 1:15-2:00pm Big Ideas: Students will learn to make a decorative piece of art using food. Connection to IRP:
Gr. 1 A4 Create 2-D or 3-D images for a given purpose; of a personal significance; that represent time; to communicate experiences and moods; in response to objects that other images they have experienced Gr. 2 A5 Create 2-D and 3-D images to communicate experiences, moods, and stories; to illustrate and decorate; that represent a point in time; that represent specific places; based on events or issues topics in their school and community

Outcomes: Students will be able to make and decorate a haunted tree that represents the mood of
Halloween.

Strategies: Modeling and verbal instructions. Materials/ Resources Needed:


Time 1:15 Black licorice Thin wire Scissors Candy corn Candy pumpkin Graham cracker Black thick wire Chocolate Icing/Frosting Wire cutters or scissors Cardboard or paper plate

Lesson Outline:
Introduction Demonstrate to students how art piece is done through modeling and verbal instructions Ask students to get materials by their colour groups Ask students to head back to desks when they have the materials Body Students are putting in the wire into the licorice Ms. Li is circulating around the classroom to help students cut the wire if needed Students are spreading chocolate frosting onto their graham crackers and putting that on their cardboard or paper plate Students ask for the licorice tree to be tied together then placed on the graham crackers Students shape the tree however they like and finish off by decorating the fence with candy corn and putting candy pumpkins in the field Conclusion Let students know they should finish up their patterns Ask students to put their names on the cardboard or plate that is provided for them Clean-up

Criteria for Assessment/Evaluation:


Scanning and checking for engagement and participation while circulating Teacher prompts questions and students answering (while explaining instructions at the carpet) Ability to use different candies to decorate Ability to follow instructions

Students ability to use fine motor skills when shaping licorice tree and putting candy corn fence up

Possible Modifications/ Extensions:


If there are extra licorice, students can try to use the wires to make other objects out of the licorice as well
