Helen Brennan (803) 528-0573 brennanhj@gmail.com March 17, 2011 Rick Thames Editor The Charlotte Observer 600 S. Tryon St. Charlotte, NC 28202 Dear Mr. Thames, The Visiting Writers Series is a very popular series of speakers held here on Appalachian State Universitys campus. Jay Parini, a well renowned poet, novelist, and professor is our next big speaker. We are honored to have such an inspiring speaker come to our school and we hope to share this opportunity with the Charlotte community as well. Parini is the D. E. Axinn Professor of English and Creative Writing at Middlebury College in Vermont. He has taught at numerous prestigious colleges while also balancing writing novels, poetry and reviews. Parini is a well-respected man who can enlighten the Charlotte community about all of his works and how he got to where he is now. His most famous work, The Last Station, was recently made into a major motion picture. The opportunity to have this event and these series means a lot to the Appalachian community. With todays economy, who isnt looking for a fun and free event to attend? Many local Boone residents as well as students and out of town visitors will be at this event, and we would love to add some Charlotte residents to the mix. This event is located on Appalchians campus at the Plemmons Student Unions Table Rock room with free admission. It will be held on Thursday March 17 at 7:30 p.m. I will contact you next Wednesday to answer any questions or concerns you may have. In the meantime, I can be reached at 803.528.0573 or brennanhj@appstate.edu. Thanks in advance for the consideration. Yours truly,

Helen Brennan CEO & Founder
