Network Case Study. Sri Lanka now in very quite and peace situation after 30 years of civil war. In those days Sri Lanka government had to allocate lot of budget to that civil war. But now government tries to distribute that money for many developments in the country. As they identified, Lack of technology used in Sri Lanka Police Department, presently it has been increased the rate of crimes, accidents and other incidents. There for government decide to increase departments Information technology system. As they plan to launch this project in provincial vise they select Galle and Matara Police stations as main point to develop in Southern Province. In there they identify to develop 6 Divisions in each Police station and those are as follows. Crime Division Child & Women Division Intelligence Division Traffic Division Minor offence Division Vice (Corruption) analytical Division.

In this development each Division going to setup with a network and maintain separately. Then all departments are connected to main PC. As well maintain databases, files and any other things separately. Also will install an Evidence Management System (EMS) to control and maintain all kind of crime, traffic, etc. issues. In this new development they try to setup new CCTV (Closed-circuit television) camera system in Galle and Matara town area, Wi-Fi camera system for police premises and New SMS, email Service. This SMS system enable automatically send SMS and receive SMS from any one who are support to inform any crime or any other offence and e-mail system will use for internal functions. As well in every day they need to back up Matara and Galle data to each polices. Assume you and your staff appointed to develop this value added network for Matara and Galle. You appoint as the Network Administrator for the southern province. They required to maintaining a very high level security for their important data such as suspects records, crime records, employee records, Intelligence Division records and any other necessary records, you are free to use any mechanism to protect their data. Now plan a network for this project to achieve their all requirements. As government decides to establish a well structured, full featured network to provide best service for the civilians. 4

Assignment Tasks 1. Analyze and clearly identify the requirements of the system for this network. Outline the benefits and evaluate the impact of having a network within an any organization in order to convince the management of that organization (LO 1.1) 2. Design a suitable network for each police and each division for their purpose and critically evaluate and justify the network design (LO 3.1) 3. Identify required types of servers you need for this network system. And critically discuss and select suitable hardware and software components needed in order to create this new network infrastructure by mentioning their functions. (in server OSs you have to explain minimum 5 roles) (LO 2.1 / 2.2) 4. Discuss about the workstation hardware you have chosen for your organization with more emphasise should be given to network compatibility. Then discuss OSI reference model and map network devices which you have used when design your cooperate (LO 2.3) 5. Explain the different types of Networks (LAN, MAN, WAN, CAN, HAN) and network topologies. Select your suitable options for each section in your network with reason. (LO 1.1 / 1.2) 6. Select appropriate network protocols for your organization with justification (at least 8 protocols). (LO 1.3) 7. Identify some applications for each police departments. Then apply some required policies to control particular Domain users according to department requirement. (OU). Then get the feedback and document the related issues if found. (LO 3.2) 8. Show Installation procedures of the windows 2003 server and a service which you can centrally manage users and computers in the network. Demonstrate how you will add a workgroup computer to the domain you created by assigning appropriate IP address to the client pc and create network drives (LO 4.1 / 4.3) 9. Discuss some enhanced services that you can add into this network system. And briefly discuss about Wi-Fi and 802.x technology standards.(LO 4.4 / 1.2)

10. Design a maintenance schedule to support the network system which includes backups, upgrades, security and auditing. Etc... And write a report to enhance the network security and the responsibilities of network Administrator in order to maintain a better network (LO 4.5)
