Adrian Frutiger was born in 1928 near Interlaken, Switzerland. He became an apprentice as a compositor and then attended the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts. From 1949-1951 he studied type and graphics under Alfred Willimann and Walter Kch. Frutiger began his work as a typeface designer in 1952, when he went to Paris to work at Deberny & Peignot. His first typeface creations were Prsident, Ondine, and Meridien (Figure 10.1). His reputation reached new heights with the creation of his Univers sans-serif font in 1957 (Figure 10.2). Then in 1961, He founded a studio in Arcueil near Paris along with Bruno Pfffli and Andr Grtler. Adrian was also Professor for ten years at the Ecole Estienne and eight years at the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Arts Dcoratifs, Paris. Frutiger also worked as a freelance design consultant for companies such as the IBM corporation. In the 1970s he was commissioned, by the public transport authority in Paris, to develop new signage for the Charles de Gaulle airport. He created a new typeface for the designs that were later released for public use as Frutiger (Figure 10.3). He is also known for the production of Avenir, french for future, that was inspired by the Futura font in 1988 (Figure 10.4). In 2008 Frutiger collaborated on a reworked version of Meridien, which was released by Linotype as Frutiger Serif in honour of his 80th birthday. Adrian Frutiger currently lives in Bern, a city in Switzlerland. Throughout the years he has received several awards including, the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Mainz in 1986, Medal of the Type Directors Club of New York in 1987, Officier de lOrdre des Arts et des Lettres, and the Grand Prix National des Arts Graphiques in France in 1993.
