Rise to Power Sumer was a region of independent villages and citystates since 5000 BCE. In 2300 BCE, the Akkadians people came from the north and conquered most of the Fertile Crescent Region. They were led by a military leader named Sargon the Great. The First Empire The Sargon Legend states that Sargons mother placed him in a basket then set floating down the Euphrates River. He was raised in the royal home, became cupbearer to the king, and possibly* assassinates him. Many historians connect the story of Moses and Gilgamesh to the life of Sargon. He created the worlds first empire and successfully ruled his vast territory for 56 years delegating power to loyal governors.

Culture Akkadians language replaced Sumerian; however they still used cuneiform to write. Sargons daughter Enheduanna (the first author in history to write in first person) left behind many writings, including songs and hymns. Wealth sent from one country to another as a sign that the other is superior. It was important because it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in the world. They incorporated Sumerian culture because they worshiped the same gods and goddess. They also used irrigation techniques and they both used Cuneiform.
