Present a report on an Australian author and at least two of their novels.

You should aim to introduce others to the life and works of an Australian author of your choice from the list. Complete all questions below to form your report. Make sure you include a bibliography including all sources of information you used while completing this project. Presentation Format: Use Pages to create a newsletter or brochure, create a website, or write a series of 6-8 blogs using Weebly.com, glogster or blogger.com.

Consult the reference section of your school or local library and the internet. Find out as much as you can about the author. Make sure you reference where you find your information. Task: Notes: When and where was s/he born? What sort of childhood did s/he have? Where did s/he attend school? Did s/he go on to study at university or other tertiary institution? What did he/she did study here? What was his/her first place of employment? When did s/he become a writer? How many novels has s/he

written? What sort of novels are they? Does/did s/he spend his/her adult life in Australia? *Try to include more than just factual information in this area of your research. Make your work as interesting as possible to your readers. Read several books by the author [at least 2] perhaps from different stages of his/her career. Make notes on each novel read under the following headings: Task: Notes: Plot/narrative [what's the novel about?] Characters [Who are they? Describe each of them in brief form. What is their relationship to each other?] Themes [What are some of the main ideas that are focussed on in the novel?] Structure [How many chapters are there? How long are they? Are their sections? Describe the narrative 'voice'] Style [Is it written in formal language? colloquial?] Your response to the characters and to the work as a whole [Do you like the characters? why/why not?]

Think about the information you found when you researched the author. Task: Notes: Does the author appear to have drawn on his/her own experience? Are the novels particularly Australian in any way? Consider the language, attitudes, values, characters how Australian do they seem to be? Compile your findings into a detailed report which discusses the life and works of the author you have studied.

Extension:** Write a piece of distinctively Australian literature. Capture your understanding of Australia perhaps in a short story set in the past, or a modern story; or perhaps an imaginative portrayal of life in future Australia?
