CEEB 221: INTRODUCTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 2.0: SOLIDS IN WATER AND WASTEWATER

2.1 Objective To determine the concentration of suspended solids in the sample 2.2 Theory Total Suspended Solids are solid materials, including organic and inorganic that are suspended in the water. This would include silt, plankton and industrial waste.Volatile Suspended Solids are those solids lost on ignition (heating to 550c).Fixed Suspended Solids are those solids that stayed after ignition (heating to 550c).

2.3 Procedure 1. A GF/c (glass fiber grade c) filter paper was weighed up to 4 decimal points. (m1) 2. The filter paper was transferred on to a filtration system and 10ml of sample was poured out. 3. Then the filter paper with the filtered sample was transferred in to the oven and was heated 100c for 1 hour. 4. After 1 hour the filter paper was transferred on the tripod for cooling and then was weighed. (m2) 5. The filter paper was placed in a 550c furnace for 5 minutes and then was transferred again on the tripod for cooling. 6. The filter paper was weighed. (m3) 3

2.4 Results (Data Observations) Data Volume of sample, ml Mass of filter paper, g Mass of filter paper + dried solids, g Mass of filter paper + ignited solids, g Total Suspended Solid, mg/l Volatile Suspended Solid, mg/l Fixed Suspended Solid, mg/l = 10ml = 0.2060 g (m1) = 0.2210 g (m2) = 0.2154 g (m3) = 150 mg/l = 56 mg/l = 94 mg/l

Calculation Total Suspended Solid in mg/l = [ (m2 m1) sample ] x 105 = [ (0.2210 0.2060) 10 ] x 105 = 150 mg/l Volatile Suspended Solid in mg/l = [ (m2 m3) sample ] x 105 = [ (0.2154 0.2060) 10 ] x 105 = 56 mg/l

Fixed Suspended Solid in mg/l

= [ (m3 m1) sample ] x 105 = [ (0.2154 0.2060) 10 ] x 105 = 94 mg/l

2.5 Discussion The mass of the glass fiber grade c filter paper, mass of filter paper + dried solid and mass of filter paper + ignited solid are taken until 4 decimal points to get the accurate value of masses. Thus the values are essential to find the Total Suspended Solid, Total Fixed Suspended Solid and Total Volatile Suspended Solid. The test must be undertaken with caution because we dealing with high temperature furnace, and oven which all of that can cause harms. Always wear a thick glove when dealing with the furnace and use clamp to hold the filter paper. 2.6 Conclusion From the result we can conclude that the Total Suspended Solid concentration is equal with Total Fixed Suspended Solid plus Total Volatile Suspended Solid concentration.
