The Malaysian ESL Syllabus: An Analysis

Abstract Malaysian students standard of English language proficiency has been a topic of discussions in many seminars and research. The students inability to for example, express their ideas in English is an issue that seems to be a cause for concern. In order to determine whether or not English language lessons in Malaysian schools may prepare students to become effective English language users, this paper examines the aims of the teaching and learning of English in the Malaysian ESL context. This is done by analyzing the Malaysian ESL syllabus document emphasizing the documents specified objectives as well as the specifications of its language content section. By investigating the syllabuss aims and content, this research study hopes to shed some light into what should actually take place in the classrooms. Keywords syllabus document, teaching of English
