BACKGROUND 1. The AAP-15 Ad Hoc Working Group (AAP-15 AHWG) was established in 1993 to assist the NATO Terminology Coordinator (TC) with the updating of AAP-15. 2. With the advent of the NATO Standardization Agency (NSA) and the publication of the Policy for Standardization of Terminology and the Directive on the NATO Terminology Programme, the NCS restructured the AAP-15 AHWG as the NSA Abbreviation Staff Group (NASG). The NASG TOR is attached at Annex A.

Avec la mise en place de l'Agence OTAN de normalisation (AON) et la publication de la Politique OTAN de normalisation de la terminologie et de la Directive sur le Programme OTAN de terminologie, le Comit OTAN de normalisation (NCS) a rorganis le GTAH AAP-15 de l'AON en Groupe excutif de lAON sur les abrviations (NASG). Le mandat du NASG figure l'annexe A.
AIM 3. The purpose of AAP-15 is twofold: a. to give the full form of the abbreviations most commonly found and used in NATO documents and publications;

MISSION 1. The mission of the NATO Standardization Agency Abbreviation Staff Group (NASG) is to manage all NATO abbreviation proposals in coordination with the Office of NATO Terminology Coordination (ONTC).
COMPOSITION 2. a. The NASG shall be composed of the following members: Permanent Chairman:
CC MAR HQ Northwood, Linguistic Service Representative. b. Permanent Members: HQ SACT Linguistic Service Representative IMS Translation Service Representative IS Translation Service Representative NSA Joint Branch Representative ONTC SHAPE Linguistic Service Representative c. Ad Hoc Members: Representatives of Tasking Authorities (TAs): CNAD SCEPC MC NADC NC3B SNLC 3. When required, representatives of TAs or any other bodies will be invited to attend the meetings to participate in discussions.
RESPONSIBILITIES 4. Under the NATO Policy for Standardization of Terminology (C-M(2003)37), the Directive on the NATO Terminology Programme (NTP) and its supporting guidance, the NASG shall: a. review abbreviations and their full forms included or proposed for inclusion in the NATO Terminology Database (NTDB) and, if tasked, found in published NATO glossaries and lexicons not recorded in the NTDB; verify their consistency and

ANNEX A / ANNEXE A AAP-15(2008) compliance with the established lexicographical, terminographical and other conventions and rules laid down for the NTP; b. maintain and update AAP-15 - NATO Glossary of Abbreviations used in NATO Documents and Publications, which is under the custodianship of CC MAR HQ Northwood; make recommendations on abbreviations and their full forms used within NATO; advise Tasking Authorities through the ONTC or their representatives on the NASG on any abbreviation issues; contribute to the ONTCs annual report to the NATO Committee for Standardization (NCS) as regards abbreviation activities, and in particular make recommendations on NTP policy and procedures relating to abbreviations and their full forms.

SUPPORT 5. Secretarial support shall be provided by the ONTC for NASG meetings held at NATO HQ, and by CC MAR HQ Northwood for NASG meetings held at CC MAR HQ Northwood.
METHOD OF WORK 6. The Chairman shall convene meetings of the NASG as required and agreed by the permanent members. 7. The Chairman shall ensure that the convening order, agenda and, if possible, supporting documents are published three weeks in advance of meetings and distributed to all members. The NASG shall take into consideration the views expressed in writing by other NATO bodies not represented at a meeting provided they are received one week in advance. 8. If the NASG is unable to agree on abbreviations or their full forms proposed for NATO Agreement, it shall prepare appropriate recommendations for submission through the ONTC to the Arbitration AHWG for decision. 9. The results of NASG meetings shall be recorded in decision sheets.
10. The Chairman shall, to the extent possible, staff proposals and issues between meetings by correspondence, e-mail or teleconferences with the members of the NASG. The NATO Terminology Management System (NTMS) shall be used extensively to promote such work. REVIEW 11. The NASG shall review its Terms of Reference at least once a year and submit any changes for approval to the NCSREPs.

ANNEX A / ANNEXE A AAP-15(2008) a. examiner les abrviations et leurs formes compltes qui figurent ou dont linclusion est propose dans la Base de donnes terminologique de lOTAN (NTDB) ainsi que celles, si cela lui est demand, qui sont dceles dans des glossaires et lexiques publis de lOTAN non rpertoris dans la NTDB ; vrifier leur cohrence et leur conformit avec les conventions et rgles lexicographiques, terminographiques et autres tablies, rgissant le NTP ; tenir jour et actualiser lAAP-15 Glossaire OTAN des abrviations utilises dans les documents et publications OTAN, dont le pilote est le QG CC-Mar Northwood ; formuler des recommandations sur les abrviations et leurs formes compltes utilises au sein de lOTAN ; conseiller les TA, par lintermdiaire de lONTC, ou leur reprsentant auprs du NASG, sur toute question ayant trait aux abrviations ; contribuer au rapport annuel de lONTC au Comit OTAN de normalisation (NCS) pour ce qui est des activits lies aux abrviations et, en particulier, formuler des recommandations sur la politique et les procdures du NTP applicables aux abrviations et leurs formes compltes.

SOUTIEN 5. LONTC et le QG CC-Mar Northwood assureront, respectivement, les services de secrtariat des runions du NASG qui se tiendront au sige de lOTAN et au QG CC-Mar Northwood.
MTHODES DE TRAVAIL 6. Le prsident convoquera des runions du NASG, si ncessaire et avec laccord des membres permanents. 7. Il veillera ce que lavis de convocation, lordre du jour et, si possible, les documents complmentaires correspondants soient publis trois semaines avant la runion et diffuss auprs de tous les membres. Le NASG tiendra compte des avis exprims par crit par dautres organes de lOTAN non reprsents la runion, condition que ces avis soient reus une semaine avant sa tenue. 8. Si le NASG nest pas en mesure de trouver un accord sur labrviation ou la forme complte proposes aux fins dagrment OTAN, il doit formuler des recommandations appropries, qui seront soumises pour dcision au Groupe de travail ad hoc darbitrage par lintermdiaire de lONTC. 9. Les rsultats des runions du NASG seront consigns dans des comptes rendus de dcision. 10. Le Prsident doit, dans la mesure du possible, tudier les propositions et les questions souleves entre les runions par correspondance, courriel ou tlconfrence avec les membres du NASG.
