Reference text for Part 1 of CENG M008, Physical Effect Modelling Unfortunately I do not know a concise single text

which gives the basic information presented in the physical modelling lectures. There are two relevant texts in the UCL science library, chemical engineering section, row Q50. These books are both available electronically via SFX (from Knovel complete). 1) Guidelines for Consequence Analysis of Chemical releases, CCPS/AIChE, 1999. This book gives a description of virtually all of the information covered in the course in a readable manner and is probably the best text for the course. It has some good schematic diagrams showing the release types. Note that we do not cover confined explosions (section 3.5) in the course. Also, we only cover the mechanism for vapour cloud explosion associated with turbulence generation. We do not cover the older TNT equivalence model as I do not consider this model to be valid. Please also note that many of the hand calculations shown in the text are incorrect. 2) Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, F P Lees. 2nd or 3rd edition The 2nd edition of this book is in the library. The 3rd edition is available to you electronically. They are very similar. This is a 3 volume reference work which contains all the information in the physical modelling lectures. It is however rather difficult to extract the core information from the plethora of detail. The sections to focus on are Chapters 15, 16 and 17. In Particular: Outflow Figure 15.1 a schematic diagram of emission configurations 15.1.6 critical (choked) flow 15.1.7 Gas and vapour discharge [note you will not be expected to remember the equations (which are given in the lecture notes), just the main features which control the gas flow] 15.8 - Vessel rupture and vapourisation 15.9 - Pipeline rupture 15.10 Boiling/evaporation Vapour cloud dispersion 15.11 Vapour Cloud Dispersion (leading to flash fire on ignition) Fires 16.2 Flammability 16.15 Fireballs 16.17 Pool fires 16.18 - Flares 16.19 Jet Flames Explosions 17.1.2 Deflagration and detonation 17.27 Vessel burst explosions 17.28 Vapour cloud explosions (note: we do not cover the TNT method for this course) Steve Hall 26/1/11
