Date: January 29, 2013

Objective: To explore the nature of sounds, and to discover how pitch and quality of sound can vary or change. Time 25 Minutes Instructor Activities -Give a brief introduction of how sounds that are produced can have a different pitch depending on different factors. -Briefly give an overview of activity and expectations. -Review worksheet with students first to ensure clarity of filling up the bottles, etc. -Monitor students throughout experiment process. Learner Activities Resources and Materials -Glass bottles -Water -Worksheet -Pencil

-Students will tap each size of bottle with a pencil to determine the pitch that they make. -Students will then order the bottles beginning with highest pitch. -Students will half-full each bottle with water and tap them again, predicting first what they think the outcome will be. -Record results. -Students will take the two largest bottles, fill one two-thirds full, and the other one-third full, and record what they sound like now when being tapped. -Blow across the bottles and observe the pitch again. -Students will try to come up with rules for why pitch changes. Assessment: Summative assessment based on completion and understanding of activity.
