Preface
Predictions at times fail because the exact time of birth is not
known: or it is known only approximately. The moment when
the umbilical cord is cut is generally not noted. Henoe one has
to rectify the given time of birth.
There are some methods given by the ancient texts. Some
methods refer to the Moon and MandL Uttara Kala.m.rita
offers a method based on the birth constellation and the weekday_Modifications to this are made by recent writers. These
provide a stable background from which one ~n proceed .
Nadi Rectification Tables also were prepared by some
Scholars of astrology . These are found wanting because the
TATIVAS are not clearly understood by the writers.
Then there are methods of rectification based on Directions. These refer to primary and secondary directions and
also annual solar returns. An examination of these shows
them incapable of rectifying the time of Birth.
There is Bailey's Parental Epoch. This is examined in
detail. Finally symbolic directions are explained in detail.
With the help oft.he important. events in the past, the symoolic
directions, it is maintained, will help us to rectify the time of
birth within a minute or two.

1
The Moment of Birth
When is' a child actually born? There are different views.
Much depends on the actual moment of birth in timing the
events. Some argue that the moment the head of the child
comes out orthe mother's womb is the actual moment of birth.
What happens when in some cases where instead arthe head,
the legs appear first? A second view argues as the basis of a
statement - 'Kalau bhupatanam smritam', In this Yuga of
!{ali the moment afthe birth is the time when the newly born
falls on the ground . Nowa-days many deliveries take place in
the maternity homes. The babes do not fall on the ground .
Should we wait till the attendant nurse places the babe on the
ground? The doctors may not allow it. A third. view fixes the
moment arthe birth as the t ime when the child utters the first
cry. What happens if the child does not cry till it is slapped?
According to tradition, Parikshit was a still born child. Sri
Krishna provided artificial respiration and slapped him till he
cried. Was that the moment of birth?

Then there are some so called wise men who fix a very
good time and make the woman undergo a caesarian opera-

tion. Is that the correct time? We have some cases of this kind
of birth. In some instances, the child came out after the time
fixed by these so called wise men. In other cases the birth took
place on the previous day very very naturally. One mayor
may not believe in destiny. But the child comes into existence
unawares.

10

Rectification of Birth Time

There is a fourth view which we accept. The moment of

birth is that particular time when the child has an independent existence. Till then it breathes through the mother . It is
when the umbilical chord is cut that the child comes to exist
independently. Till then it is an integral part of the mother.
This moment comes within three minutes aethe delivery time
recorded in the hospital or at home. The recorded time then is
not the correct time of birth. It has to be adjusted in the light
of the events. When one follows primary or seoondary directions, the difference in the timing of events can cover upto
nine months. Moreover, how many of our clocks show the
Standard Time correctly? This problem is further complicated.
by cases where we have to deal with twins.
How should we arrive at the oonect time of birth? The
answer is simple, but difficult to implement. In the case of a
grown-up person we can succeed to a certain extent. Here we
have to note the dates of the important events that took place.
This is possible only when the native is nearing thirty. Even
then we have no certainty that we can fix the time of birth
accurately. The dasas, antardasas, Vidasas and the like
spread over a long period. When the given birth time presents
the very end or the beginning of a sign, it perplexes not only
the average student of astrology, but also the scholar. Hence
there is need to know how to rectify the time of birth.

2
Traditional Methods
Our astrological texts have indicated. some principles which
are said to enable us to rectify the time of birth.

When powerful lagna, Sun, Moon and Guru occupy odd

signs or navamsas, there is a masculine birth, If these occupy
even sings and amsas, they give rise to female hirth. If the
Sun and Guru are in odd signs, there is a male birth. If the
Moon. Kuja and Shukra are in even signs a female is born. If
these planets are in rommon signs aspected by Budha, there
will be twins whose sex is determined by the nature of the
signs.

Utpala interprets, the last part to mean the navamsa

signs of the common signs Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanush and

Mina.
In the chart of Mahatma Gandhi (i) Ravi and Guru
are in even signs. Lagna and the Moon alone are in odd
signs. Varahamihira's theory fails, In navamaa Lagna
and Guru are in even signs. But in Mrs. Indira Gandhi's
chart Ravi, Guru, Chandra and Lagna are in even signs,

Nehru's chart Lagna, Chand ra and Ravi are in

of doubtful value only.
In the present author's
chart Lagna, Sun, Moon
and Jupiter are all in even
signs. Is Varahamira

wrong?

At the time of Varahamihira the sidereal (nirayana) and

the tropical (sayans) Zodiacs must have been the same. His
theory appears to work as the Sayana Charta to a large extent.

II . Another theory was propounded by the author of

Uttara Kalamrita. Slow 5 and 6 of the first Chapter read
thus:

Here three methods are given. The first two refer to the
time of birth and the sex of the native. The third determines
the Lagna.
From the time of sunrise (local mean time) to the given
local mean time of birth, note the ghatikas and the Vighatikns
that have elapsed.
Each ghati is equal to twenty four minutes, and each
Vighati has twenty four seoonds. An hour is equal to two and
a half Ghati. A ghati has sixty Vighatis.
Convert the duration into Vighatis. Multiply this by four
and divide it by nine. The remainder oounted from Asvini,
Magha, and Mula must coincide with the star at the time of

13

Traditional Methods

birth. If it does not agree, the birth time has to be adjusted

accordingly.
Suppose the birth was at ten Ghatis and finy five
Vighatis. This gives 655 Vighatis. This multiplied by four is
2620 and divided by nine the remainder is one. It is Asvini,
Magha or Mula. But if the birth star is Sravana, the remain
der should be four. We have then to add three Vighatis or
deduct six Vighatis. The birth then must be at gh 10.58 or at
gh 10.49.
The second method has to be applied to detennine when
the time thus rectified will hold good of a male or a female
birth.
Convert the duration between the local meantime of sun
rise and the local time of birth into Vighatis. Divide this by
225 and take the remainder. Divide the remainder into groups
of 15. 30, 45, 60 and 75 Vighatikas. The second and the fourth
groups represent a female birth. The rest indicate a male
birth.

46 Vighatis to 90 Vgh

91 Vighatis to 150 Vgh

151 Vighatis to 225 Vgh

In this division out of 225 Vighatis, 135 are given to male

births and 90 to female births. A closer view will show that
after 75 Vighatis at the end, the next fifteen also will cover
male births. This is paradoxical.
A person was born at 10 Gh. 58 Vigh afler sunrise. The
Vighati divided by 225 gives a remainder of 208. This places
the native in the male birth group. This is correct. As per the
exact time of birth of another, the Vjghatis after sun rise are
1242. The remainder is 117 which falls within the female
group. Have to deduct 27 Vighatis or add 34 Vighatis to the
time of birth just to prove this theory?

14

Rectification of Birth Time

.

A male child was born at 28gh. 25 vgh. The Vighatis are

1705. Divided by 225 the remainder is 130 in the female
group. Are we to add 21 Vighatis or deduct 40 Vighatis from
the birth time. This is preponterou8. One possible way out is to
divide the remainder by 75 to get three groups. Then the
Vighatis 0 to 15, 31 to 45, 61 to 75 should indicate male birth,
and the rest a female hirth.
The theory as stated is not acceptable.
III. Some amendments are made to the above theory by
the way of a double check-up. According to this, multiply the
birth Vighatis by three and divide it by seven. The remainder
counted from Sunday in the order of week-days, must agree
with the day of birth.
Take the example of birth at 10gh. 58 vigil. The Vighatis
are 658 which when multiplied by three and divide by
seven leaves no remainder. It is then &even which is Saturday.
But the native was born on a Thursday. What should we do
then? 6i8 multiplied by four and divided by nine gives four
which agrees with the birth constellation. If the birth is at 11
gh. 16 vgh, the two will agree - birth constellation and the
week-day. We are not justified in adding 18 Vighatis to the
birth time.
The late Mr. Rajagopala fyer in his New Era Directions in
Astrology haa given a modified method. which is claimed to
satisfy both the nakshatra and the week day. His formula is
simple.
Multiply the birth Vighatis by four and divide it by nine.
The remainder plus one is to be counted from Dhanishtha,
Mrigasira or Chitra, and it gives the nakshatra at birth. In
many cases we have found that one need not be added to the
remainder.
Multiply the birth Vighatis by three and divide it by
seven. The remainder to be counted from Friday. He has
taken Friday probably because KaIiyuga commenced on a
Friday.

Traditional Methods

15

Then 658 Vighatis according to the traditional version

gives Sravana nakshatra correctly; and according to Sri Raja.
gopala Iyer's method gives the week day correctly as Thurs-day.
IV. The position of Mandi is taken by some to rectify the
ascendant, not the exact time of birth. In Uttara Kalamrita we
read:

~ "Oftr 'F:Ii~'4~,*",",'i'61~"tfM 1.11 ~

Note the Rasi and Navamsa occupied by Mandi and by the

Moon. Find out who is stronger. The Lagna at birth will
correspond to:
(i) The sign occupied by Mandi or the Moon whoever is

stronger; or
(ii)

It may be the fifth, seventh or the ninth sign (or either of

the two;

(iii) If the ~vamsa sign occupied by Mandi and the Moon are

stronger than their Rasi positions, the lagna will corre

spond to houses, 1,5,7 or 9 from the stronger of the two.
Here we get nearly ten alternatives. We are lucky since
the author has not covered the remaining two houses also.
This view differs from the one given by Mantresvara in his
Pha/a Dipika (3.16):

'!If"<:l'I uftJ<Iflr 1M l!i!o.,l'i

lagna at birth to the sign occupied by Gulika at birth. (Iv) If
(i)

16

the Moon is stronger, the Jagna will be a trine to the position

of the Moon.
Mantresvara's view appears to be sounder. But we should
know how to calculate Mandi and Gulika.
When the duration of the day is thirty ghatis or twelve
hours, Mandi appears at the end of 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 2
.ghatis counted from Sunday onwards. If the duration is more
or less than thirty ghatis, we have to increase or reduce these
proportionately. lfthe birth is at night and if the duration of
the night is thirty ghatis, Mandi appears at the end of 10,6,2,
26, 22, 18 and 14 ghatis counted from Sunday onwards.
For Gulika divide the duration of the day or night into
eight equal parts. For a day birth count from that day 00wards. The end of Saturday's part is that of Gulika. For a
night birth count from the fifth day (from the day of birth);
and the end of Saturday's part gives the position of Gulika.

These calculations may fix the lagna. But they do not provide any clue to the correct time of birth.

V. According to some a~thorities the position of Pranapada enables us to fix the time of birth. The concept ofPranapada is based. on the law of periodicity. Birth can take place
only at certain intervals of time. There is thus a correction
between the lagna and the degree of Pranapada. Parasara
observes that in rectifying the time of birth we have to consider Pranapada, and the position of the Moon.and Gulika.
Convert the time of birth into Vighatis and multiply it by
two. Add the product to the Sun's longitude if the Sun is in a
movable (cardinal, Chara) sign. If the Sun is in a fixed sign
add the doubled Vighatis to the Sun's longitude and also add
240 degrees. If the Sun is in a dual (Common) sign add the
doubled Vighatis to the Sun's longitude and also add 120
degrees. Expunge multiples of 360. The result gives the position of Pranapada.
For example, the birth Vighatis are 658. Multiplying this
by two, we get 1316. The Sun is in a cardinal sign at 278 de-

Traditional Methcds

17

gree.lO'. Adding the two we get 1594 deg.l0'. The product

is 154 deg.l0'. Pranapada is Kanya on 4 deg.l0'. This is no-

where near the lagna at 658 Vighatis. The lagna is Mina 25

deg.46',

The lagna at birth can be a trine to Pranapada or the seventh from it. This is no consolation since the exact time of
birth cannot be known from Pranapada.
The Uttara Kalamrita theory and its modification as
propounded by Sri Rajagopala Ayyer can be of some help
to us.
VI. Another theory argues that the navamsa signs occupied by the lord of lagna and by the Moon can be the lagna at
birth . This is a vague theory. It can at best help us when the
calculated lagna is at the beginning or at the end of a sign.
VII. There is still another view. Take the navamsa sign of
the lagna. It has 200 minutes, duration. Find the dvadasamsa
of that navamsa sign. Each dvadasamsa has duration of 16
minutes and 40 seconds. Count the resultant dvadasamsa
from the navamsa lagna. If it falls in an odd sign like Mesha,
Vrishabha etc., the native is a male.
Each dvadasamsa oBhe navamsa lagns is of 16'.40" duration. When the lagna is 25 degA6' of Pisces, the navamsa
lagns is Kumbha. In the eighth navamsa 146 minutes are
over. This gives the ninth dvadasamsa.1t is Tula, an odd sign.
This agrees with the sex of the native. But if the ayanamsa
value given by Lahiri is not accepted, the result can be different. This method can fu: the lagna and not the time of birth.
TM time can be within a range of roughly twelve minutes.

3
Day-Constellation Complex
Of all the traditional methods one seems to be hitting the
bull's eye. Leaving aside the determination of the sex as per
the birth ghatis, we can consider the method given in Uttars
Kalamrita. This enables us to check the vighatis at the time of
birth. This can at times force us to correct the time by about
four minutes, as far as the constellation is ooncerned. The
time arrived at has to be checked to coincide with the weekday
ofhirth.

The Vighatis from Sun rise to the moment of birth have to

be multiplied by four and divided by nine. The remainder is to
be counted from Asvini. Magha, or Mula; or from Dhanishtha.
Mrigasira or Chitrao Mr. Rajagopala Iyyer wanted us to add

one to the remainder. We do not approve this. Still we are

giving the tables as this also may form as basis for the sake of
further explanation .
This result is to be corrected further. The time of birth in
local time has to be reckoned from the local mean time of
Sunrise. Convert this interval into Vighatis. Multiply this four
by three and divide the product by seven. The remainder has
to be counted from Sunday or Friday. This must agree with
the day of birth.
We are presenting three sets of tables. The first agrees
with one given in Uttam Kalamrita along with the correction
necessitated by the weekday. The second table is as per Raja-

Day - Constellation Complex

19

goMia Iyyer's method. The third ignores the addition of one to

the remainder for arriving at the birth star_
The day begins with Sun-rise in all these reckonings. It
will be found that on any day the interval between two times
is sixty three Vighatis. This is a-little over twenty minutes. To
reduce this interval, it is better to take the nakshatra from
one table and the weekday from another. This is only one
possible method.
The figures are in Ghatis and Vighatis. The time of Sunrise given in many Panchangas appears to be the Indian
Standard Time. This has to be converted into the local mean
time_ Using two tables together, if necessary, the time of birth
can be corrected within three minutes only.

Table IV
(8) The problem of relating the first table to the second or
third creates difficulties. The first is based upon Uttara
Kalamrita modified to agree with the weekdays. It starts with
Asvini N akshatra and Sunday.

(b) The second is based on Sri Raja Gopala Iyyer's method.

It wants us to add one to the remainder to get the birth constallation from Dhanishta. Mrigasira or Chitrao Here the
week starts from Friday.

(c) The third is a modified version of the second. Here no

addition is made to the remainder to get the birth Constellation.
The formula in all these cases is:(i) Birth Vigh.tis multiplied by four and divided by nine.
The remainder gives the ronstellation at birth.
(ii) Birth Vigh.tis multiplied by three and divided by seven.
The remainder gives the weekday of birth.
In all the three tables the times of birth are at intervals of
63 Vighatis. Divide the birth ghatis by 63. Take the remainder. See whether it fits into any of the following. Otherwise
make necessary adjustments.
(A) First the method of Uttara Kalamrita, We are giving

Day - Constellation Complex

Taking the Vighati from the time of the day, one can apply
the relevant data to the second or third table.
(B) The next table follows Sri Raja Gopala Iyyer's method.
Birth Vighatis multiplied by 4 and divided by nine gives a
remainder. Add one to this and rount from Dhanishtha, Mrigasira or Chitra to get the birth star. The starting point is the
weekday. The nakshatras are counted from Asvini to Revati.
The first Vighatis are given. Weekday is from Friday.

Sunday, Anuradha. at 29.45. Table III corrects it to 29.46.

Thursday, Sravana, at 10.58. The remainder is 28. 28 x 4
divided by 9 gives four as the remainder. Counted from Mula
we get the nakshatra as per Uttara Kalamrita. But 28 x 3
divided by 7 leaves no remainder. If we count it from Sunday,
it turns to be Saturday. But if we count from Friday, we get
Thursday. This is what is meant by taking nakshatra from

one method and the weekday from another.

Since Table IV does not clearly present the method. ofsyn

tbesising the two methods we give the two tables, one for the
nakshatras and another for the weekdays

Table V
(A) Following the theory of Uttara Kalamrita we give the
weekdays. The first column gives the Vighatis and the second

In Tables II, and IV (8) we have followed Sri Rajagopala
Iyyer's method; according to this divide the birth Vighatis by
sixty three. Add one to the remainder and count it fram
Dhanishtha, Mrigasira and Chitrao For those who are interested in this method, we give the remainder Vighatis and the
corresponding nakshatras. The count is from Dhanishtha,
Mrignsira, and Chitrao But to avoid confusion we are numbering them from Asvini.

Tables I and III can enable us to rectify the time of birth.

Where necessary we need modification {rom Table IV (A) and
(e), and also (rom Table V.
From these tables we can draw BOme conclusions.
(1) The tables stop at Vighatis only. But what happens when

the recorded births give us something like gb 9. Vgh 40

and 45 (3/4 Vgh)? ThiB is a serious snag in this theory.
(2) The tables show that births can occur at sunrise and sun-

set.
(3) These tables can help to fIx the time of birth within three
to fIve minutes alone.
(4) They do not determine the sex of the native. Possibly we
have to amend the principle given in Uttara Kalamrita

67

Nadi Rectification
The Nadi texts give the birth time in ghatis and vighatis. A
careful scrutiny of the texts gives some clues to rectify the
time of birth. The method followed by the Nadi texts that on
any day the five elements(Bhutas, Tattvas) follow one another
in a regular sequence. The sex of the person is determined by
the element ruling at that time. It is also related to the constellation in which the Moon is found at that time. Thus births
are possible at certain times. However births appear at certain
fixed times or intervals of time.
The lunar mansion, the element or tattvas operating on
the weekday, and the Sun are the factors to be taken into
account . The elements or tattvas are Prithivi (Earth), Apas
(Water), Tejas (light and heat), Vayu (wind), and Akasa
(Ether). These are responsible for all physiological, psychological, and biological changes. They together constitute the
physical body and the universe around us. All matter on earth
has the quality of these five elements.

The five tattvas repeat after every ninety minutes, on any

day these sixteen such repetitions. The duration of each
tattvas is fixed. Their sequence depends on the weekdays. We
give the tattvas, their duration, the ruler of each, and which
tattva begins as a given day in the week.

and Akash (space, ether). Their duration in this sequence is 6,
12, 18,24 and 30 minutes. Jaia (water) and Vayu (air, wind)
are faminine. The others are masculine. This is a slight modification of the theory given in Uttara Kalamrita. This text has
fixed for ever the same sequence of the Tattvas as follows in
Vighatis:

Here the sequence is made to depend on the weekday

alone. Even our major objection remains. After Akash Tattva
we get the Prithivi Tattva. During these 36 minutes there
should be no female births. This is simply impossible. Another
gives birth to twins a boy and a girl - within the duration of
the same Tattva or within theAkash and Prithvi Tattvas. The
sex determination dependent on the Tattvas fa.jJs miserably.
As we noticed earlier, one way to overcome the difficulty is to
move the Tattvas Orst forwards, then backwards, next forward and so on.
Acx:ording to the cosmology given in the upanishads and
fortifi"ed by the Sankhya and Vedanta, each tattV8 includes

Rectification of Birth Time

70

the others, except Akash. Thus Prithivi tattva has half of

Prithivi, while the other half includes the other four tattvas.
This will detennine the nature and behaviour of the person
concerned.
Akash tattva is complete in itself. Vayu includes Akash
also. Tejas includes the first two in its second half. Jala includes in its second half the previous three .
Since Moon and Venus are feminine, Jala tattva may refer
to the birth of a female. But what about Prithivi tattva and
Vayu tattva ruled respectively by Mercury and Saturn? Vayu
tattva is given to Saturn and it is said to refer to the female
births. Like Saturn, Mercury too is a eunuch. Why should
Prithivi tattva be called masculine? The best way to consider
Prithivi and Vayu tatlvas as both male and female.
According to Nadis each sign has 300 parts. The first 160
parts have a sequence and this is reversed in the next 150
parts. This division enabled them to determine the sex, caste,
place of birth and eo on. Each degree of a sign has ten parts;
and each part has a duration of six minutes of that degree.
Each degree has sixty minutes, and each minute has sixty
seconds. The Sun apparently rovers the 360 degrees within
twenty four hours. He traverses one degree in four minutes.
One tenth of a degree takes twenty four seconds. This is the
time measure accepted by the Nadi texts.
As per the Vimshottari dasa system, we divide the constellations into three groups, each group ruled by one planet. For
easy reference we give these in a tabular form thus:

The same group recurs after every twenty seven minutes.

Each group of three constellations is divided into movable
(csl'dinal), fixed , and common signs. This is not exactly so .
Krittika first quarter, end of Aslesha. third quarter of
Visakha, and the second quarter of Dhanishtta end the cardinal s igns Mesha, Karka, Tula, and Makara respectively. Second quarter of Mr igasira, first quarter of U ttara Bhadra, end
of Jyeshtha, and the third quarter of Purvabhadra end the
fixed signs of Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika, and Kumbha respectively. These distinctions have to be kept in mind in any
tabulation. Enumerating the nakshatras from Asvini to Revati by the numbers one to 27, we fi nd the numbers
3,5,7,12,14,16,21,23 and 25 fall each in two different s igns.
These constellations do not coincide with the division into
movable, fixed and common signs. These nakshatras partake
the natures of two signs. This again ma kes tabulation into the
triplicity of signs problematic.
Births can occur at the time of Sunrise also. Dr.
B.5atyanarayana Rao denies this in his book the Nadi Rectification. He has prepared the tables for the rectification of the
time of birth. He rightly remarks that for the purpose of
rectification we need. the joint operation ofm the lagna and its
triplicity, (ii) t he Constellation at the t ime of birth, (iii) the
weekdays, and (iv) the time of Sunrise.
The nakshatras in the following tables are given by their
numerals, countingi from Asvini to RevaH as 1 to 27. The
lagnas rising at birth are given as movable. fixed, and commo~. The t imings are given from the local time of sunrise,

Rectification of Birth Time

72

assuring it to be 6.00 A.M. If the local time of sunrise is before

or after 6.00 A.M. deduct or add the difference as the case may
be. Dr. Satyanarayana Rao's tables start from 6.3 A.M. This is
not acceptable.
When we give 6.00 A.M. it means from the beginning of
6.00 A.M. to the end of 6.2 A.M. The three minutes are to be
distributed among the three constellations. The signs refer to
the Niryana Zodiac.
As we said earlier, we cannot give Akasha, Tejas and
Prithivi to male births entirely. As the Panchikarana doctrine
clearly states. the elements other than Akasha are constituted
in a peculiar manner. Each has half of its own nature, the
other half being filled by the preceeding tattvas.

Prithivi being ruled by Mercury can give male or female

births. The seoond half oC Jala (6 minutes) and the seoond half
ofVayu (12 minutes) do give rise to male births. The second
half ofTejas (9 minutes) and Akash (15 minutes) can give rise
to female births. These factors have to be kept in mind while
using the tables.
Dr. B. Satyanarayana Rao gave some tables in his book.
He started with Krittika, and we with Asvini. He takes
Prithivi, Tejas, and Akash to give male births only, while the
other two give female births. We are inclined to take Prithivi
to give male or female children, preferably female children.
The other four have to be divided each into two parts. The
second half of Jala tattva and Vayu Tattva can give male
births. Similarly the second half of Tejas and Akash Tattva
can give female births. These are the modifications proposed
in the following tables. The lagnas referred to are Nirayana
Signs.

We will note some examples to see how far these tables

work. The day begins with Sunrise only .
1. Alan Leo. 5.49 A.M on Aug 7, 1860 at London, It was a
Tuesday and the Sunrise was at 4.39 A.M. The birth was one
hour and ten minutes after Sunrise. Adding this to our starting point 6.00 A.M., we get 7.10 AM. Against 25 in our Table
Revati is in a fixed sign at 7.14 A.M. Alan Leo's birth should be
at 5.53 A.M. It shows Male or Female.

2. Mahatma Gandhi, 1869.10.2 at 7.10 A.M. Saturday Sun

rise 5.50, Lagna Libra, and Aslesha . The birth was after 4.30.
Adding this to our starting point we get 7.14.30. Under 27 we
get 7.19 and the birth ought to be that oCa male. The system
fails if we do not add four and half minutes. The birth should
be at 7.14.30 A.M.
3. J.e.Bose at 4.12 P.M. Sunrise 6.29. Tuesday, Hasta
Taurus. Deducting 29 minutes (since it is more than 6.00) we
get 3.43 P.M , No, 15 give 3.44 P.M. and the correct time is
4.13.

4. C.R.D.. 1870.11.5 at 6.49 P.M. Sun rise 6.10.30 A.M.

Libra, Saturday, Uttarabhadra. No. 17 gives 50 minutes after
Sunrise or 23 minutes after Sunrise, The table is of doubtful
value.
5. Rabindra Nath Tagore, 1861.5.7 at 3.52 A.M. Monday
Revati, Mina Lagna . Sun rise 5.28 A.M. It is H 1.36 before
Sunrise. Under 4.24 AM . we have to look into our tables, Our
table gives 4.17 A.M which corrects the time to 3.45 A.M .
6. Birth at 10,58 A.M. Sun Rise 6.35.48, As per our tables
it should be 10.24. Thursday, Sravana and Mina lagna. We get
the time at 10.29 which comes to 11.4.48 A.M, Dr. B. Satyanarayana Rao's Table give 10,26 AM, which is 11.1.48 AM.,
and it shou ld be a female birth. This is the time oCa male, The
Tattvas fail. But ift.he tattva is divided into two halves we can
get a male birth .

These Tables may enable us to correct the time within

twelve or fifteen minutes only.

Pre-Natal Epoch
There is a method of correcting the time of birth by going back
to the moment of concept ion. Bu t the trouble is tha t this
moment is generally unknown. It is called Adha ns or Nis heka
Lagna. This le gna is related to the time of birth .
1. Parasara refers to this method . Take the distance from
the Sun to MandL Then take the distance from the given CliSp
of the lagna to the cusp of the ninth. Add these two. Take an
example.

The Sun is on 278 deg. 10'.3' and Mandi on 343 deg.44 'S5".
The distance is 65 deg. 34'52". The lagna is 355.45.35 and the
ninth is 232 deg. 35'.12", The distance is 236 deg.49'.37",
Adding these two we get 302 deg.24'.29" , The Sun is on 278
deg.tO'.g",

Count the Sun backward to this point. We ge t 335

degAS' .34" . This is supposed to give the interval between the
time of birth and the time of conception .
2. Samara Simha in his Manushya Jataka refers to
Adhana Lagna. When the longitude of the Lagna and that of
the Moon are the same in the natal chart, conception is said to
have take n place 273 days earlier. When the Lagna and the
Moon are 180 deg apart, conception is said to have taken place
158 days earlier.
3. In the third quarter of the fourth chapter Jaimini gives
some princip les to dete rmine the time of birth on t he basis of

the time of conception. The rele\'ant Sutras are:

Determine the time of birth from Adhana Lagna, Hora

lagna and the like. The lagna, according to the particular
navamsa has to be converted into minutes and seconds. This
refers to the lagna and its navamsa at the time of conception.
Then convert the seconds into Amurta Kala or Pranas.
Amurta is that which cannot be identified. Six Pranas
make one second. Then convert the above into anuliptas or
grades. One prana has ten grades (anuliptas, anukalas), one
Vilipta (second) has sixty grades. The number 2,4,4 are to
d~!ducted from the anuliptas (grades) for 'Chara, Sthira and
D Nisvabhava signs respectively.
For a movable ascendant two should be deducted from the
at .uliptas of grades. For the others we have to subtract fOllr.
Flam the remainder we have to determine the navamsa rising
at birth.
Divide the last quantity by nine and take the remainder.
This remainder determines the ruling planet of the navamsa
of the lagna at birth.
These sutras can be interpreted in different ways. The
sixth sutra can mean: Multiply the anuliptas or grades of the
past navamsa by the Kalakas or horas in a day. Divide it by
72000. The quotient gives the horas (hours) which have
elapsed after sunrise at birth.
The degrees of the concerned navamsa at conception is
proportioned to the time that has elapsed from Sunrise to the
t.ime of birth. Each navamsa has 200 liptas which are equal to

12000 viliptas, or 720000 anuliptas or grades. The day has

sixty ghatis or twenty four hours.
Past Horas

Navamsax 24

Navamsa advanced

720000

This is how we have to find out the moment of birth from

the chart a t the time of the sex act. How to know which
moment of which coitus made the woman conce ive?

Take an example. The ascendant at Adhana is 4 deg .. 20' in

Aries. The degree of the second navamsa is over. It is equal to
216000 a nuliptas. The homs (hours) which elapsed an.er Sunrise till birth will be:

216000
30000

36
5

=Seven hours, twelve minutes.

This depends on the accuracy of Adhana lagna.

The seventh sutra may be explained in a different way.
The degrees progressed by the ascendant at birth s hou ld be
detennined by multiplying the anuliptas by nine.
In every nav8msa these are 720000 anuliptas. In each
sign there are 6480000 anuJiptas. If one degree of nava msa is
over, the ascendant at birth progresses by nine degrees in the
sign of the lagnas.
The eighth s utra asks us to take the navamsa of the lagna
at birth . From the nsvamsa of the birth cha rt, we have to
arrive at the cha rt of the Adhana lagna.
The Sutra only gives vague principles. At the most we can
arrive at the navamsa lagna which covers 200 Iiptas. Each
navamsa covers nearly thirteen to fifteen minutes.
4. Let us now turn to Varahamihira who suggested the
pre-natal epoch theory in one verse of his Brihajjataka.

The birth of a child takes place in the sign occupied by the

Moon. This is represented by the number of the dvadasamsa
(1/12 part) occupied by the Moon at that time. The day or
night and the ghatis of birth time must be known by the
number of ghatis a t the time of the question and the nature of
the sign as diurnal or noct.urnal.
The Moon occupies scm! sign at the time of conception or
of birth . Find the dvadasamsa of the Moon. Count from the
Moon's position this dvadasamsa sign. The birth takes place
when the Moon is in that sign. Suppose the oonception took
;Jlace when Arias was rising and when the Moon was in the
tenth house Makara. If the MOtlO is in the tenth dvadasamsa.,
that sign will be Tula. Birth takes place when the Moon is in
the tenth from Tula, namely Cancer .
Birth is said to be in the tenth month after conception .
Since the Moon covers a sign in about 2 114 days , one can fix
the date of birth within this period.
A sign has thirty degrees or 1800 minutes (iiptas). Each
sign has nine quarters of the constellations. Dividing 1800 by
2 1/4 we get 800 Iiptas (Kalas, minutes) for each star. Each
dvadasamsa of a sign covers ISO liptas or kalas. Suppose the
Moon is in the fifth dvadasamsa ofMithuna. That is, the Moon
is between 600 and 750 Iiptas. It is Jess than SOO liptas which
cover one constellation. The Moon is then in the second quar
ter of Ardra, if the Moon is on the 700th lipta of Mithuna, he
has traversed one hundred Iiptas in the second quarter of
Ardra. On the day of birth the Moon wil l be at 22 Vl ghatikas
of Ardra.
Suppose the lagna is Mesha, a nocturnal sign
(Briha.ijataka, 1.10), and the Sun was in Kanya. If two ghatis
of Mesha elapsed by the time of conception, cons ider the set
ting sign Mina. This has four ghatis and in Mesha two ghatis
are over. Birth wil l take place roughly at six ghatis after Sun
set when the Moon is Kanya du ring the tenth month of the
conception.

5. By the word 'Epoch' is mea nt the moment of conception .

The mome nt of conception is not the same as t hat of the
discha rging of the sperm into the ovary . The spermaioza move
at the ra te of half a millimete r per minute - one inch . in an
hour. The rate of the movement depends on the individual
character of the sperm s ince the qu a lity of the germina ting
seed varies from person to person . The interval betwee n the

be seconds or minutes.

Pre-Natal Epoch

83

The main ideas of these writers are worth noting.

(i) Moon at birth is equidistant from the lagna at birth and

coitus. Moon is at the mid point of both the lagna.

(ii)

The Lagna at Coitus is as much removed. from the Moon

at birth as the Moon is from Birth lagna.

(iii)

''The lagna at Coitus may be the midpoint of the lagna

and the Moon at birth".

(iv) ''The lagna at coitus may be the midpoint of the Sun and
the Moon", when the birth is irregular or premature.
One or two of these principles may apply. But extensive
verification is needed..
We now give the method followed. by the advocates of the
Pre-Natal Epoch.
6. Three factors are necessary for conception. These are
ovulation, impregnation, and the fixation of the impregnated
ovum. These are governed by the Moon. The position of the
Moon in this period has a close relation to the sensitive points
in the woman's chart and also with the Ascendant or Descendant (seventh house) of the child's birth chart.
Fertilization takes nine days. If fecundation does not take
place within fourteen days after menstruation, it ceases to
function. Hence when we trace backward from the birth chart
of a native, this period does not always correspond with the
time of coitus.
The duration of pregnancy is said by our ancients to be of
273 days. Modern medical science places it at 278 days. A
child born 181 days after gestation can survive. The uper limit
cannot be beyond 321 days.
When the duration of pregnancy is 8,9 or ten lunations,
the Moon's place at the time of germination falls on the ascendant at birth, provided the Moon at birth is below the horizon
- i.e. behind the Sun. If the Moon at birth is above the horizon,
the Moon's place at gennination will coincide with the descen-

84

Rectification of Birth

Tim~

dant of the birth chart. There are other possibi lities also. Thus
if the duration of the pregnancy is 8 112 or 9 1/2 lunat.ioo, the
Moon at germination will be as the descendant of the birth
chart, when the Moon is behind the Sun.
Take the distance of the Moon for the lagna or from the
seventh house. If the Moon is below the horizon, the count is
from lagns, and if above the rount is from the seventh. Divide
this figure by thirteen which is the average daily motion or the
Moon. The product is to be added to 273 days. Counting backwards we get the date of the germination.
Take the example of 8 birth as 1920.1.22 at 11.06 A.M.
(1ST). The Moon was on 289 deg.44' .35" and the Sun on 27 8
deg.1O'.3", The Moon is above the horizon. The seventh house
is on 175 deg,4S'.3S", From the seventh house the Moon was
away by ll3 deg.58'.59',w;. Dividing it by thirteen we get in
decimals 8.768 days. The germination was 281 .768 days prior
to the date of birth. This gives 19 19 .4. 14Wl . On that day at
5.30 P.M. the Moon wason 17 deg.23'j and on the previous day
the Moon was on 15 deg.25'. On the 14th of April, 1919, we
have to locate the position of the Moon at 4.36.28.8 P.M. It is
given as 1ST. It oomes to 171 deg. O'.3' ~. It is near the descendant at birth .
The Moon's longitude at birth rises at the sideral time
15.20.1811:4. The opposite longitude of the Moon rises at the
sidreal time of 2.39.5.66
The Moon at germination was near the cusp of the seventh
house of the assumed time of birth.
The sex of the child can be determined by taking the chart
of germination time. Again we have to construct a chart for
the time arrived at. Here a re different views. One view takes
the even signs to be female and the odd signs male. But this is
debatable. Taurus may be feminine. But what about Libra? If
Mesha is masculine. can Scorpio be feminine? The same applies to Sagittarius and Pisces - odd and even signs. Do
Saturn and Mercury ruling four signs give fem ale birth? This
is not acceptable. The owner is important . Mercury can give

Pre-Natal Epoch

85

either male or female births. Saturn owning Aquarius can

give rise to male births.
The decanate (Drekkana) and navamsa of the birth chart
can give an indication of the sex of the native. According to
one ancient theory the first and third decanates of an odd sign
are male, and those for an even sign are female. But this
cannot hold good. We have to consider the sign and its ruler.
This may determine the sex. The drekkana or the navamsa of
the Moon and lagna at the time of ovulation may help us
determine the sex. But the time of ovulation cannot be known.
This is a wild goose chase.
Let us return to the theory of rectification of the time of
birth on the basis of the Pre-natal Epoch. The procedure is as
follows:
i. From the given time, place, and date of birth ascertain
the degrees of the lagna and of the Moon for the latitude
and longitude of the place.

ii. If the Moon is below the horizon, note its distance from
the lagna; and if the Moon is above the horizon, note its
distance from the cusp of the seventh house. Divide this
product by thirteen. The result is the number of days.
Call it "A" days.
iii. Note the longitude of the Moon at the given birth time
and add 180 degrees to it. Find the corresponding sidereal time of these two positions for the latitude of the
place of conception.

iv. Take the Ephemeris. From the day of birth count backward to the day of required lunation. From this date
deduct the days mentioned as "A" in above.
v. Note the sidereal time at noon for the date of the germination. Deduct this from the sidereal time corresrxmding
to the Moon's place or its opposite rising at the given
time of birth. If the germination seems to happen before
noon, take the sidereal time at noon of the previous day .
The result is the local time of germination. Note the
Moon's place at that time; and this is the longitude of the

86

Rectification of Birth Time

Moon at the time of germination.

vi. Suppose the position of the Moon at germination is not

near the longitude of the lagne or the seventh in the
birth chart, proceed as follows:
Take the Sidereal Time at noon of the germination date. If
the germination appears to be before noon, take the S.T. at
noon of the previous day. Deduct this from the S .T. corresponding to the Moon's longitude plus 180 degree rising at
birth. This gives the local time of germination. Then find the
longitude of the Moon for this time.
The date on which the Moon's place corresponds closely to
the degree of the lagna or to that of the seventh house on the
day of birth has to be taken as final. If the Moon is above the
horizon the.... "A" days have to be added to 273 day; otherwise
they have to be deducted.
We shall note the S.T. for the Moon's position and its oppo
site sign at the assumed time of birth. Deduct the S.T. at noon
on the day of germination from the S.T. of the Moon's longi.
tude at birth, or of the Moon's longitude plus 180 degree at
birth . If the germination time is before noon, take the previous
day's S .T. at noon. The result is the local time of germination .
Then find the longitude of the Moon at that time.
Consider the example already referred to. The birth was
on 1920.1.22 at 11.06 AM(lST) or 10.58.36 A.M. (LMT). The
Latitude is 16 deg.19'N, and longitude 80 deg.39'E. The side
real time of birth was 18 deg.59'.44"0111 and the Ayanamsa was
22 deg.44'.42"II. Lagna is 355 deg.45' .34"7 and the seventh
house cusp is 175 deg.45'.34-1 . The Sun was on 278 deg.l0'.3"
and the Moon was on 289 degA4'.34":IU. The Moon was above
horizon.
From the seventh house the Moon was away by 113
deg.58'.59",w. Divided by thirteen we get 87M days. Adding
this to 273 days we get 281.768 days as the period of preg
nancy. Tracing back we find the date 1919.4)4.692 . On April
24,1919 at 5.30 P .M. the Moon was on 292 deg.58' which is

87

Pre-Natal Epoch

near the Moon's longitude at the time of the assumed birth.

The germination was on 1919.4.14 at 4.36.28.8 P.M. (1ST). It is
P.M. 4.29.4.8 (LMT). The Sidereal Time at noon of 1919.4.14 is
1.25.32. The Moon's longitude at the assumed time of birth
was rising at S.T. 15 .20. 18-72~ and its opposite sign was rising
at S.T. 2.39.5.00 . Deducting the S.T. at noon on 1919.4.14 from
these two we get ST 13.54.461')', and 1.13.3366 ,respectiveiy.
We should take the S.T. at the time of germination
on 1919.4.14 at 4.36.28-8 P.M. (lST).- This gives 5.55.2P
S.T. Deducting this from the rising and setting of the Moon
at the assured time of birth we get S.T. 9.24.57-22_~ and
ST 20.43.44.16 These times will give 7.59.1P P.M. (LMT)
on 1919.4.14 and 7.15.2.68 AM. on 1919.4.15. These are in
local time. The longitude of the Moon at the time of
germination will be 172 deg.44'.45" and 178deg.21'20"
respectively.
Since the birth was before noon, we have to take the S.T.
at noon as the previous day and deduct it from the S.T. of the
Moon's p0Sition to arrive at the correct time of birth.

Directions: Preliminaries
There are some who hold that Primary or Secondary directions can rectify the time ofbirlh. This needs a close examination.
In the Primary directions we add one degree per year for
the years passed to the cusp of the tenth house and calculate
the chart. Some argue that we have to add 59',8" per every
completed year only to the luminaries, ascendant and the
tenth house. The chart thus erected can reveal the destiny, accidents and the like for the year.

In the Secondary Directions note the number aryears that

have elapsed and add the number to the Date of birth. Thus
the completed twenty six years for a person born on January
22, 1920 will come to Feb. 17, 1920. For the time of birth erect
the chart for tha t date. Compare it with the original and then
predict. If the events agree. then the time of birth given is
correct.
Note the aspects of the planets in these two forms ofDjrec~
tion on the luminaries, lagna, and tenth house of the natal
chart. The aspect of a planet to an angle indicates the event to
happen .
In the theory of Directions there are as many as seven
different views. (i) Some like or hold the Radix measure of
59'.8- per year. (ii) Some take the actua l solar motion and
want us to add this to every year that has elapsed . (iii) An-

Directions: Preliminaries

91

other section takes fifteen minutes per year to be added to the

ascendant, M.C., lu minaries and others. This is said to indio
cate worldly prosperity and it is assumed to indicate the time
of death . (iv) W.Frankland advocated adding 4 2n degrees per
year. (v) He also advocated adding 4n deg. per year. (v i) Dr.
Garnold advocated adding 3/5 deg. per every year. (vii) Carter
and others preferred one degree per year. The last is called by
us the theory of symbolic Directions.
An eighth theory is that of the Solarreturn chart. In any
given year note when the Sun returns to the place occupied by
him at the time of birth (degrees, minutes, and seconds) . For
that time and date of the concerned year erect the chart.
Compare it with the natal chart. Calculate the Dasas and
predict the events. Here the Tajika texts by Nilakantha and
others prescribe one method for calculating the dasas, while
the Uttara Kalamrita gives 8 different method. It is difficult to
check. If the predicted results do not occur, the given time of
birth needs correction.
In all these methods our main difficulty lies in pinpoint
ing the actual time of an event. The time when a certain
aspect takes place is not always the time when the event takes
place. There is always an interval between these two. An
aspect may be found on the first of July, but the event may
occur in the following April or May. This time lag has to be
determined,if the time is corrected on the basis of the past
events, Moreover, this may not agree with the dasa, antar
dass. and Vidasa of the Visathan System.
Be fore any rectification is done, it is necessary to remem
ber a few factol'S. First we consider natural benefics and male
fics. Jupiter is a full benefic, Venus is threequarters benefic,
Mercury is a half benefic, and the waning Moon is a quarter
benefic. The full Moon, the Moon on the tenth day of the
bright half and on the fifth day of the other half. and the half
Moon are benefics respectively as full , three.quarters, and
half. Saturn, Rahu and the waning Moon are malefics. The
Sun is a half malefic, but when Mercury and Venus are with
the waning Moon, they are full benefics like Jupiter. The

92

Rectification of Birth Time

Moon in debilitation or in conjunction with the Sun is s imilar

to Saturn . So too is the Moon aspected by Saturn. But the
Moon may be a waning one, and he may be aspected by
Saturn; but if such a Moon is aspected by Jupi ter, he is a full
benefic. So is the Moon in Sagittarius and Pisces. The Moon
and Mercury become malefics, when they are with malefics.
even if they occupy their own signs.

Now we proceed to consider the planets that become malefics or benefics because of certain factors. Even a natural
benefic does become a malefic by owning a Kendra, o r by being

in a bad house, or by association with a malefic. But a malefic

becomes a benefic by being lord of Lagna, or by occupy ing
Lagna, or by being owner of a Ke ndra (quadrant) or a Kona
(trine). The ownership oCa Ka na ( 1st, 5th, 9th houses) always
makes a planet a benefic. The ownership of houses 3rd, 6th,
8th, 11th and 12th makes one a malefic. A benefic in a Kendra
( 4th, 7th, 10th houses) gives good results, and a malefic there
does not act in this way.
A benefic owning the 1st and the 10th houses does not
become a malefic. This holds good for Kanya <Virgo) and
Meena (P isces) Lagnas. A malefic in the 5th and 9th is not
generally cond ucive to do good. The ascendant, the s ign occupied by the Moon, the s ign having the lord of the s ign occupied
by the Moon are all to be examined in determining which can
be the Lagna for a given chart.
Next we should note the fateful degrees in various signs. If
the Moon is found in these, there is a disaster if the house
happens to be a Kendra or the 8th house in particular. These
fateful degrees ere, beginning with Aries, 26, 12, 13, 25, 24,
11,26,14,13,25,5 and 12 respectively . Equally dangerous or
malefic are the degrees 8,9,22,22,25, 14,4,23, 18, 20, 21 and
10 for the s igns in order beginning with Aries.
Let us also add the parts of the body governed by the
s igns. Aries and Libra refer to the brain, head, and muscles.
Taurus and Scorpio speak about the throat, bronchial tubes,
neck, shoulders, muoous membranes, and glands. Gem ini and
Sagittarius tell us about lungs, arms, hands and ne rves. Can-

93

Directions: Preliminaries

cer and Capricorn indicate the heart, stomach, trunk of the

body, and bones. Leo and Aquarius speak of the kidneys,
lumbar region, and the skin. The remaining two signs refer to
the bowels, legs, feet and blood.
In the light of this informations see whether the chart
erected for the given time fits the situation. It is not very
helpful to see that the ascendant agrees with the situation,
because the ascendant may be spread over two hours. Even
then one must be able to distinguish the dominant features of
each sign as the ascendant. The features indicated by one sign
are to a large extent different from the one proceeding it and
from the one succeeding it. Having ascertained the ascendant
we have to fix the actual time.
A planet located alone in a particular hemisphere acquires
a special importance and prominence. By being situated thus
it is vested with a peculiar emphasis. To begin with, let us
take Mars. To this planet practirel things are t;lore important
than ideal ones; thereby it refers to activity, initiatives, and
originality.

The first chart is that of Karl Marx. Here is a northern

hemisphere emphasis, in so far as the planets are concerned_
Life for h im must have been an intensely subjective one torn
by an inner or spiritual conflict. As in the case of Luther, Marx
too was opposed to superficial religion, outward pomp and
extravagance and vanity . He carried this to the extremes.

Rectification of Birth Time

94

There is a planet here in the sixth, cut off from the rest. This
indicates the failure on the part of Marx to adjust himself to
those around him, including Engels. This western hemisphe re
gets a particular emphasis from Mars who is also at the
beginning of his debilitation. This has made him an unconscious pioneer in human history, not on the spiritual side but
on the side governing the affairs of the sixth, viz. servants,
labourers and workers. Mars has given him a unique place in
the tragic history of man . Sigmund Freud has all his planets
from the ninth to the twelfth, with Mars alone in the third .
The southern hemisphere has made him purely selfless to the
extent that he fought against odds defending his theories of
the infantile sexuality. He was occupied with concrete, visible,
and practical things. He became a pioneer in the inner s ide of
life in the depths of the unconscious. To add to all this, Mars
was in the third, and the third house governs the affairs of
everyday living. He has given us a me thod of adjusting ourselves to the changing environment.

The second chart is that of Napoleon, with planets in the

eastern part and with Jupiter isolated in the East. These
eastern hemisphere people select their own future and carry it
as they like. Just as Mars indicates a way of acting in which
the practical things are more important than ideal ones, so
does Jupiter indicate a way of acting in which the individual
selects the circumstances of his self-expression. The soul acts
eastward, participating in lire spontaneously and jovially .

95

Directions: Preliminaries

Jupiter reveals how the individual will invite experience, and

how he will expand his relationships. In the case of Bismarck
too the planets are between the fifth and the tenth houses,
with Jupiter in the third. These two were sensitive to responsibility and they were the executors of their own opportunities. Jupiter in the second for Napoleon has spread forth the
personality laying out all the resources. On the other hand,
Bismarck, since he had Jupiter in the third worked with the
potentialities that were near him. Jupiter reveals himself in
the power of organisation and in enlisting the fullest co-operation of others.

The third chart is that of Mary, Queen of Scots. All the

planets are in the western hemisphere, indicating that she
was a product of the times a nd that she tried to exploit the
situation in England. The stage was set ready for her and she
played the role allotted. Saturn here is on the hemisphere
line. Saturn indicates a way of acting in which the individual
accepts experience and attempts to adjust himself or herself to
practical facts. Havelock Ellis has all his planets between the
tenth and the fourth, with Saturn in the seventh very near
the hemisphere line. Thus there is a world of contrast between
these two. Human biological differences are brought by him
into a psychological perspective. Because of Saturn he was
sensitive to the deeper significances of experience. The position of Saturn determined his life work with the mal-adjustments and sickness; and yet Saturn has given him sensitive-

between the fourth and the eighth. Isolated Saturn and isolated Mars are very s triking here. Further Mercury is alone in
the s ixth. Mercury indicates a way of acting in which the
su pre macy of idea over material things is made personal. Here
action proceeds with the awareness of the various factors of
experience and ordering them. Mercury unravels the pattern
of mind. When Mercury is a morning star, the mind of the
native will be eager. When this distance is more than fourteen
degrees, the mind is completely untra melled and free to examine everything, and free to dea l everything as he likes. Such
are the cases of Marie Antoinette and of our fifth chart which

belongs to Trotsky. Such too was the case with Queen Victoria. All these were exceptionally alert to their respons ibilities
and were interested in all these things with a childlike in
genuousness. And such too were Bismarck, Havelock Ellis and
Shakespeare. But when this distance is less than fourteen
degrees, the mind is no doubt eager but controlled or censored
by the will or self. Such a thing we find in Luther. Here
tradition and conscience p!<\y a leading role .
If Mercury rises behind the Sun, that is, when Mercury is
the evening star, and maintains a distance of more than four
teen degrees from the Sun, the mind is deliberate and without
sensitiveness. The mind is more carefu l and pays attention to
the general stol'e of traditional human wisdom . Sir William
Hamilton was born whi le Gemini was ris ing; the Sun (11) Leo,
Venus (29) Leo, MercuryVirgo (1), Mars (3) Saturn (12) and
Uranus (8) all in Libra. Jupiter (26) and Neptune (26) in
Scorpio, and Moon in Sagittarius at the beginning. This is a
very good example of the principle we are formulating here.
Hamilton was in advance of his age, and knowledge to him
was only a clarification or refinement of the exist ing materi
als. But whe n this distance is less than fourteen degrees, we
have the deliberate selfconscious mind. Woodrow Wilson is
ou r supreme example. Richard Burton, Freud, Pope Pius XI,
and Wilson were all self-conciollsly concerned with the cui
tural roots of humanity and they proceeded with their sen
sitve ideals.

Trotsky's Venus is in the third house. Our sixth chart is

tha t of C ba rls 1 of England . In this s ixth, we have all planets
from the second to the fifih . Venus is at the end. Venus
indicates a way of acting in which ideal things are more
important. Here we find an undue emphasis on relaxat ion and
satisfaction, or on repudiation and ultimate distaste. How the
native looks at things, engages them, and.gives them meaning
and value-these are some of the things depending on Venus.
Those who have Venus alone in the tenth house will make
capita l of the aesthetic talents in the sphere of motion pic
tures. Here in the cases of Troksky a nd Charles I we find how
Venus has given a dramatic s ignificance to their lives.

The Moon is prominent in the cha rt of Napolean and the

Moon indicates a way of acting in a wholly unasha med selfinterest, the feelings of the individua l and how he responds to
the world are to be noticed here. And we can tabulate our
resu lts thus: Sun-Will; Moon- Feeling; Mars-Initiative;
Venus-Appreciation; Mercury-Mind; Jupiter-Enthus iasm ;
Saturn-Sensitiveness.
The fo ur directions that we find in our universe are a lso
felt and seen in the Horoscope. These directions are of fundamental importance in prediction, and very few astrologers
seem to pay any attention to them. They learn them by rote as
a part of the routine and then forget them as quite useless,
s ince they do not come across any sign ificant data about them
in any book. This essay is intended to throw some light on this
topic, and thereby to stimulate further enquiry.
There are twelve parts or houses in the Zodiac. Of these
the rising sign is always in the East, whe nce the seventh
marks the West. The fourth represents the North and the
tenth the South. Thus we can divide the Zodiac into four
sectors. We can also speak of the southe rn hemisphere compris ing the houses 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12; while the other six.
will go to make up tlie northern hemisphe re. Once again we
can speak of the Eastern hemis phere from the tenth to the
fourth house while the other part will be the western he misphere.

99

Directions: Preliminaries

Let us take a concrete illustration and follow these

directions clearly. Chart 7 is that of a resourceful lady. Her
husband was a renowned man; but he left her with four
children in a state of poverty. And mainly through her own
efforts and initiative, she succeeded, became famous throughout the country. All the planets are between the tenth and the
fourth houses, or in the Eastern hemisphere. The planets are
'East', and hence she was able to shape her own career
independently. She utlised all her energy and resourcefulness. She opened a shop, though a small one. Yet she used it to
help struggling authors and artists. Thus when the planets
are East, we have to state that there will be 'the self-direction
of the destiny'; for in the east rises everything and has its
start.

Woodrow Wilson's horoscope has the quite reverse design.

Almost all the planets are between the fourth and the tenth,
or in the western hemisphere. I It is a well-known common
place that Wilson was a product of his times, that he was not
the author of his own destiny; for the political developments in
New Jersy pushed him up, along with the nature of the Contest in the Democratic National Convention. The split in the
Republican party facilitated his coming for the first time to the
Presidential Gadi. His re-election was brought about by the
surprise vote of California. He became famous because of the
First World War . And his own child, the League of Nations, is
a great failure. Such people who have the emphasis on the

100

Rectification of Birth Time

Western Hemis phere, enter the wor ld when the s tage is set
ready for them.

Thus the Eastern Hemispbere people select their own and

carve their own future; on the other hand the Western Hemisphere people take whatever is served to them .
Next le t us see a third direction. In Queen Victoria's horoscope all the planets Bre arranged from the eighth house to
the Ascendant or they are in the southern hemisphere exclu sively. This Queen was purely selfless. She was objective and
impersonal. She was occupied chiefly with practical, concrete
and visible things. Such too was the age in which she Jived.
Outward respectability was prized high . These Bfe the features of this southern hemisphere.

Martin Luther provides a contrast, for his pla nets are

ranged between the second and the sixth houses. They Bfe in
the Northern hemisphere. Here life is purely subjective, spiritual. One is occ~lpied with invisible affairs. Super fi cial religion, outward pomp and show, meaningless extravaga nce and
vanity all these are vehemently opposed. Such is the life of
Mrs. Annie Besant too.
But such c1earcut cases are rare and we frequently find
planets inclining this way and that at the same time. Yet the
same features will hold though to a lesser extent. But in these
cases nealry half the houses are falling vacant. And a vacant
house is us ually s lurred over by our professionals. But we
have to note that the presence ofa planet in a sign only means
that the affairs denoted by that sign are particularly emphasised. As such the vacant signs are as much significant as the
filled ones.
The central house at the eastern part of the horoscope
reveals the personality of the individual. This is the Ascendant. But this is always related to the two adjoining houses,
the twelfth and the serond. The twelfth house governs the
hidden elements that run through the self-direction of life.
Here we come DcrOSS the lingering moods, fears and obligations. These things a re powerful forces in life; for they can as

Directions: Preliminaries

101

well lead to bitter opposition, confinement, imprisonment,

insanity and so on. Likewise the tweln.h house indicates also
the hidden sources of strength, power and will. In other words
it is both a constructive and a destructive house . The same
reasoning points out. that the second house reveals all that is
in store for the native. While the tweln.h house supports or
strengthens or weakens out of past experience and gives the
background, the second house expands or spreads forth the
personality laying out all the resources. Thus successful persons always have strong succeedent houses (2, 5, 8 and 11), as
the resourceful lady and Martin Luther have a strong second.
That is when the seoond house gets an emphasis from the
presence of a planet therein , it implies the real problem of
personal means.
Coming to the western hemisphere, we have to take the
seventh in connection with the sixth and the eighth. The
seventh focusses the relationships in which it is essential to
defer to others or work in co-operation with others. In other
words it involves a partnership or a co-responsible work. The
absence of a planet in the seventh implies no s uch obligations;
and Woodrow Wilson is a good example, for he was swept
along by destiny himself being never sensitive to anything of
that kind . The sixth house, therefore, on the analogy of the
twelfth points to the relationship that is hidde n or limited servant, relations, debts, etc. It implies the service he is to
render to his own affairs by way of work or sickness. Wilson
had a planet in the sixth, as a result of which he always failed
in adjusting himself to others around him. The eighth, as
usual, speaks of the expanding possibilities of these relations,
legacies and the means. It speaks of the development of character arising out of human relations, and of death, which is
the final chapter in this regeneration. The help one can render
~nd the help one receives are given out here. Wilson and the
Queen have planets here, and the part played by reciprocal
activity in their lives is too well-known.

Directions: Limitations
Prognostication
"Without a reliable and complete system of directing, all natal
astrology tends to remain vague and abstract". Having stated
this candidly, Mr. Carter proceeds to observe that "all candid
astrologers will admit that none of our present systems give
entirely satisfactory results", In his, -Introduction to Radix
System', Mr. Robson pleads for a method which can combine
"the wealth of directions and the definiteness of predictions of
the primary system with the ease of the working of the secondary". Some systems of directing take a day after birth as
equivalent to one year. Others progress the Sun and the M.e.
by one degree or 59'S" per year after birth. Still others take the
solar return or the lunar return or both. When we look at the
arcs of progression given by various authorities, we are bound
to be confused.

Before we proceed let us have a look at the confusion into

which the astrological authorities are pleased to throw us.
Frankland wants to apply 4 deg.n or 34 2fT minutes per every
year after birth and also to apply 3 degj/ or 25
minutes
per year. Carter leaves it to us to choose one of these; and then
we have to combine it with one degree and 2 U2 degrees
progression per year. He accepts Frankland's view that 4 deg./
7 arc is malefic while 3 deg.n measure is benefic. And in his
'Principles of Horoscopic Delineation' he observes: "If I abandoned all others, I would at least retain the 1 deg. to a year
measure". Dutt proposed that 3 deg. 36' to be added per every

5n

Directions: Lim.itations

103

year after birth. Dutt got this arc by dividng the total degrees
of the zodiac by one hundred. If we can divide it by 100, we
have a better justification to divide it by 120 which is at the
basis of the Vimshottari system. Actually we step into the land
of symbolism when we take up directional progression. Any
such symbolical progression must a pply uniformly to every
house and to every planet in any given nativity.
When the individual is born, he has a certain configuration of planets and other astral bodies; and these are with the
individual. As he grows, so do they. This rate of growth depends on the intellectua l, moral and spiritual growth of the individual. On the purely physical plane the rate of growth can
be a fixed unit per year: But man is more than a physical
object. As such the rate of preg-ression is bound to vary from
individual to individual; and it also varies from one period to
another in the life of the same individual. This appears to be
the truth underlying the method advocated by Mr. Robert
Yaget in his paper in the 1957 Annual Number of THE
ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE.
Most of the arcs of progression per year vary from 57
minutes to 65 minutes; and only a few go beyond or below
these figures. The arc may be obtained either from the rate in
which the Sun's apparent motion is found after birth; or one
may takE recourse to the motion of the Moon, or to the sidereal
time. WE : have to enquire whether we can fix the approximate
measure of progression.
As we advance, we are carrying with us the zodiacal pattern found at the moment of our birth. There should then be a
corresponding advance in every cusp and in the position of
each planet. The whole zodiac symbolised as the nativity affects us; and consequently the zodiac in its entirety represents
the maximum possible duration of a man's life. Whe n we
divide the 360 degrees of the zodiac by this maximum duration, we may also be able to get the average arc per year. And
this very romplicated job can be solved if we have a scientifically accurate method to determine the longevity of any nativity. But then new proble ms may crop up. And we can only

104

Rectification of Birth Time

experiment with the system of directions, before we can arrive

at any certain measure. Now we have, for good or bad, the
Vimshottari system which gives us a maximum of 120 years.
In view of reports of people living beyond 120, we msy have to
revise this figu re. The degrees of the zodiac are exactly divisible by 120; and we can then take up any figure which can so
divide 360. Thus we can have an average arc of2 or 3 or 4 or
5 or 6 degrees per year. And if we consider the horoscope to
represent a connecting link between the past life and the
future lire of an individual, we can have an average measure
of one degree. And for purpose of this paper, we propose to
s how how the average a rc oCone degree a nd the average arc of
three degrees actua lly work.
In the actual working of the directions, the entire emphasis shills to the aspects formed between the radical and progressed positions. No aspect is good or bad in itself. Its precise
nature depends on the nature of the planets, on their relation
to the ascenda nt, and on their location. Next we have to
consider the observation of Robert Yaget tha t the actual event
may not take place exactly at the time when an aspect is
formed. This he designates the time-l ag. In other words every
aspect has a certa in orb. It extends. If it extends in one
direction, it can as well extend backwards. Then t he period
covered by an orb will be something like a vidasa or a minor
period within a sub-period . Can we overcome the conception of
a time-lag'?
Whatever system of directions we like to perfect, we have
to keep in mind two factors of pa ramount importance in a ny
prognost ication. The fi rst is the dasa system of 120 years
which in itself is a system ofdirectioos. This is of great help in
fixing up the exact time for an event; and the nature of an
event can be read with the help of the dasa system and with
that of the directiona l aspects.
The second factor refers to the modification of events

with reference to the radical Sun, Moon and Saturn, and also
with reference to the radical M.C. and ascendant. Even then,
as Mantreswara observed, Sun and Mars give results only
when they transit the first decanate of a sign; Venus and
Jupiter show their effects only when they are in the second
decanate; and Moon and Saturn have their influence as they
pass through the third decanate.
Apart from the usual rules enumerated by many an authority, there are a few principles to be remembered. If the
malefic planets transit in 1,3,5,7, 10, 19, 23 stars from the
asterism at birth, there will be some trouble or danger. If a
planet transits from one s ign to another on a day having I, 10
or 19 asterism from that of the birth, or if there is a n eclipse or
planetary war in anyone of these aster isms, it forebodes some
calamity. But if these planets are aspected by a benefic, or if
they have the conjunction of a benefic, the evi l is greatly
minimised.. Similarly if the signs having these asterisms are
transitted by malefics who are the owners of these signs, then
too there can be no evil effects.
Reckoning from the natal asterism, Mantreswara classifies all the stars to represent the whole body. He asks us to
find out the asterism through which a planet transits. If that
is a malefic transit, the part corresponding to the asterism will
be affected. Thus FOR THE SUN we get the following:Counting from the

These observations will go a long way in dating the event

and in detennining the precise nature of the event. The oonfu sian that has been set afoot by the directional system can be
resolved by working either on the one-degree arc or on the
three degree arc in conjunction with the dasa system and the
transit influences. Then alone can we succeed in rationalising
astrology.

Rectification
Rectification of the given time of birth is a rather difficult
problem. Many a tt empts have been made, and not one can be
said to be accurate in so far as adjusting an approximately
correct time ofhirth. I do not mean tha t I have discovered one .
My purpose is only to focus the attention of the readers on the
d iverse ma terial that is available and on the need to derive
some s tandard principles. In th is paper, no mention will be
made of the lu nar epoch method precisely because it is a
method which gives doubtful results at times; and it needs a
separate invest igation.

In every horoscope there are four important points. The

points close to the ascendant or descendant, to the zenith or
nadir, to the Sun or its opposition, and to the Moon or its
opposition are the essential points for consideration. The position occupied by the Sun or Moon may coincide with the first
two pairs of the sensitive points; and in such a case, the birth
time can be taken to be correct . Likewise add the longitudes of
the Sun and the Moon and divide it by two. If the result agrees
with the longitude of the asce nda nt, desce nda nt, M.C . or I.C .,
then we have the correct t ime of birth . In this manner, we
may represent the foll owing valid equations :-

6. (a) (ABedt. + Long. of M.C.) divided by 2; (b) (2 X ABedt)
... (2 X M.C.) divided by 3 =Sun or Moon.

This list can be multiplied by similar observations regarding the sensitive points. Thus Ascendant may replace Descendant, and M.e. may stand for le. Whatever we may do, does
t.he principle embodied here work satisfactorily? We are assured on good aut.hority that the agreement comes true within
an orb of three degrees. This itself is enough to show that the
entire method admits of an error of about ten minutes in the
rectified time of birth. Further, take an example of a horo
scope: Ascdt. is Aries 3deg. 15'; Sun in Capricorn 8 deg.ll';
Moon in Capricorn 19 deg.58'; and M.C. 266 deg. 49'. The
equation 5 (a) alone fits in here; and I get the longitude 278
deg.23' which falls within that of the Sun. But since I can
expect an error of three degrees, the time of birth can as well
be ten minutes earlier or later. This is surely beyond any
comprehension.
Another method tells us that we have to take the longi
tudes of the Sun, Moon , Saturn for the noon day of birth. Add

110

Rectification of Birth Time

the longitudes of Sun and Moon and take half of this

amount. Add the longitudes of Sun and Saturn and have

one half of this amount. Then add the longitudes of Moon

and Saturn and have one half of this. Add all these
three halves and divide it by two. The result will give
the Ascdt., Descdt., M.e. or I.e. This must be true of all
the persons born on that day, whatever may be the
times of their birth. This does not solve our
problem.

A third method goes by the arcs. Note the dates of the important events in the lire of the person. These dates are to be

reckoned in years, months and days after hirth. Then oouot

them into an arc oCdirection by taking one degree for one year
of life. Then add it to the longitude of the planets and find out
their aspects to the cardinal points of the horoscope. The arc of
one degree to one year is not technically accurate; and such an
arc can, if necessary, be applied only to the Sun and the M.C.
and not to any other. These limitations are enough to make us
ignore this method.
Let us take a more precise formulation of this method.
Take the date of an important event and oount as many days
afl.er birth as the native was years old at the time of the
occurrence of the event.. For example, an individual was 26
years old when an important event occurred; and the day will
turn out to be the 17th February, for one born On 22nd Janu.
ary. Then take t.he )XISition of the Moon on that day and see
whether the Moon during the twenty-rour years forms any
aspect to any radical or progressed planet. Now on the 17th
February I find the Moon in Capricorn; and there is an exact
square aspect at 118 a.m. with radical Mars (3 deg. 26' Libra).
And since the presumed time of birth falls near about 11-10
a.m., the result or this aspect ought to take place near about
the birthday.
If there is an appropriate aspect on the progressed day
find the actual time when this is formed and convert it into
months and days. Since one day is taken to stand for one year
two hours will stand for a month. Here, we are asked to note

Leaving aside the illustration already given, take up another (Chart 1). The ]l8tive was born on 19th September; and
we need the results after he completed his twentieth year. We
have to look to 9th October. The Moon is in Sagittarius 9 deg.
13' by about 5-20 p.m., that is, approximately four hours and
twenty-four minutes after his supposed time of birth . At about
1-21 p.m ., we get a square between this Moon and the radical
Moon; and this works to 10th October. This agrees with the
malefic influences that began then. By next morning 9-13
a.m., there is a square with radical Herschel, and this works
to the 23rd of Jly. But he left home and studies and was in a
crisis by the middle of January. There is an error of six
months. On the 11th October at 2-13 a .m ., there is a squa re to
radical Mars and at 8-6 a.m. I find another square to radical
Mercury. The first gives the date 8th April 1951 , and the
second gives 6th July following. It was during this period that
there appeared to be some improvement. On the 12th October
(representing 1952 September onwards), I find at birth time
the Moon in Capricorn 10 deg. 33'. But the worst period began
in September and it has come to a close by the last week of
December. The whole method seems to fail in accounting for
facts. I may be reminded of the M.C . which is 20 deg. 2' in
Virgo. But the M.C. was exact square to M.e. on 10th October
at 3-15p.m., or in the last week of October 1950. If this square

112

Rectification of Birth Tin./

is a decisive event, it mus t have occurred in the middle of

January 1950; and then I will have to accept the th irteenth
degree of Virgo as the M.e. This is roughly twe nty-eighth
minutes earlier the n the given time. I cannol enter into the
question of a lerting the given time to such an exte nt; nor can
I wa it to see what the other progressed pla net s will have to
say, s ince a t another time I wis h to discuss the difficulties
involved in progression.

Let us cons ide r anothe r method . We are told by a very

good a uthority tha t the t ransit of a ny other planet across one
of the angles of the horoscope is very helpful in recti fyin g. The
angles are the most importa nt and highly sensitive points in a
nativity; and the tra nsit of any pla net cannot be a ma tte r of
dispute. If a planet passes out of a positive quadrant (4t h to
1st house) into a negative quadrant (first to tenth>, the n we
have an indication of passing out of the parent and the like.
Fur instance, an individua l lost his father on 19111118,
when he oompleted seve nteen years and twenty-five days. The
arc of direction for this per iod works to 1 deg. 8' 17" and his
ascendant is Libra. Exact time is not known. He was said to be
born before seven a nd afte r five in the morning. Mercury was
in Scorpio 1 deg. 14'; and this degree rises when the sidreal
time was 947-18. We get 8391 when we deduct the arc of
di rection from this. This is the s idreal time of his birth. This
works to 634 a.m . as the time of birth when Libra 15 deg. 35'
was rising. Assuming this to be oorrect, if we work out the
directions to 1946, will we get the same results? Whe n he
completed fiftytwo years a nd fourteen days, he lost a son. The
arc will now come to 3 deg. 28' 10". The signifactor is Jupite r
who is in Gemini 13 deg. 58'. This degree of Sagittarius rises
at 125557; and when I deduct the arc I get at 927.47 ,
Thirtyfour years a nd five months after birth, the mothe r
died ; and this gets an arc of 21740. Neptune is 23 deg. 6 of
Taurus, This degree of Scorpio rises at 11-2421; and the
sidereal time of birth will then have to be 96-41. Here a re
three different sidereal times of birth , Which have we to
choose? The safest course is to find out whether any other
method can help us.

Directions: Some Attempted Equations

113

The re are some more directional methods which are taken

to help in determining the exact time. We can glance at the m
briefly. At the outset we have the noon date method . Cons idering one day to be equivalent to one year, for a native born on
22-1-1920 we can get. the progressed positions for 24th February 1920; and these will represent for the year beginning in
1953. Since the individual is born before noon, the noon on
24th Februa ry will correspond to some date bet.ween 22nd
January 1953 and 22nd J a nuary 1954.
Now, this me thod wants the G.M.T . of birth to be e mployed . Find the time between the birth and the nearest noon .
At the rate of two hours for one month, convert this time into
months and days. If the birth is before noon, add these months
and days to the date of birth; and if it is afternoon, then
subtract them. The result would be the noon date for any year.
The noon positions are equivalent to the progressed positions
as at this noon date. This method is a little ingenious and it
needs a careful scrutiny. It deserves a close observation.
Another is the first of January method. Subtract the
month and day of birth from the following first January; and
you get the native's age on the first January in months a nd
days. At the rate of two hours per month, convert this age into
hours and minutes. Then find the time between the time of
birth and the nearest noon; and add it to the above if the birth
is afternoon, while you have to subtract it if it is before noon.
Count the resu lt from the noon on the .birthday. Thus in the
previous example by the first of J a nuary 1921, the native is
eleven months and nine days old. This is equivalent to 22
hours and 36 minutes. His G.M.T. ofhirth is 6-2 a .m . which is
5 hours 58 minutes away from the nearest noon. Subtracting
it from 22.36 we get 16.38. This would give 4-38 a.m . on
23.1.1920. The planetary positions at 4-38 a .m . on 23-1-1920
measure to first January, 1921. Add the required number of
days; and you get the positions at 4-38 a .m . on 25-2-1920 to
stand for 1-1-1953.
These two methods are attempts to bypass a given problem. We take to some farfetched methods to explain away

114

Rectification of Birth Time

some difficulty. But if they are seen to account for a good

many facts, we can try to aooept them.

In this connection mention must. be made of the attempt of

the Kabalists. They erect a map for the seventh hour after
birth only to judge whether the child will survive. This, of
course, cannot. solve OUf problem.

The Tajaka method of solar revolution does work

very well; and some method for rectifying t.he given time of
birth can be elucidated from this. I propoee to do it on a
subsequent occasion. There are many methods which are
similar to this one and they are to a certain exttmt. fruitful.
The prgressive solar revolution method ' oonsiders one year
and one day to be equivalent to one year of life. Naibad's
method takes the Sun's mean daily motion of 58'S" as equivalent to one year of life. But the Simmonite's method conside rs
the Sun's actual daily motion after birth to represent one year
of birth . .
Apart from all these, I wish to draw the attention of the
readers to a method. I came across in an astrological treatise in
Sanskrit. It asks us to treat one day prior to the birthday as
equivalent to one year. Thus for one born on 19th September,
you have to look for the planetary positions and cusps on 30th
August if you want the results for his twenty-first year. This is
a method. which is very intimately related to the ante-natal
existence; and it believes that the post-natal life is only an
explicit working out of the potentialities lying in wait during
the pre-natal life. Theoretically this principle is sound; and I
am sure it does give valid conclusions.
At the end we have to mention the formulae given by Mr.
Satyanarain Rao. This method of rectification seems to have a
scientific basis; and in many cases it agrees with the facts. But
wherever I had any difficulty in adjusting a given time. there
I found the tables practically unhelpful. Further, his sex-table
is alright; but the other table begins its oount with Krittika.
Why should we begin with this constellation? Can't we begin
either with Aswini or with Uttarabhadra?

Directions: Some Attempted Equations

115

In the end let me point out clearly that at times where all
other methods have failed , there we can get a clue from
the dasa system. From the nature of the results embodied
in the dasas, we can adjust the time of birth to a very great
extent.

Primary and Secondary directions are incapable of rectifying
the t ime of birth .. If a predicted event on the basis of these
directions does not happen, we can say either the given time is
incorrect or these directions are of no value. The solar- return
chart may a t t imes enable us to correct the time within ten or
fifteen minutes. This is not enough. We want exactness.
An easier method has been proposed by some. It is a kind
of progression by taking the mea n daily motion of the bodies

Thus in the chart given earlier let us calculate the positions for the beginning of his forty ninth year. The cha rt will

exact square on about 1967.6.29 and it was eight and a half

Mercury on Jan. 4, 1968. He was seriously ill on 1968.3. 13 and
had to undergo surgical treatment. The mean natal Rahu
being on 208 deg.. 30'43" there was a close conjunction with
Kuja on Dec. 27, 1967. This can account for the surgery on
April 1, 1968. But what about the highest position in his
carrer which took place on April 20, 1968? We have to rely on
progressed Moon square natal Guru, and on progressed Mars
sextile natal Mercury. This is a way of explaining an event
that has taken place. Once an event takes place, the astrologer can give a thousand reasons as to why it happened . But he
should be able to forecast it earlier. We find this method also
unsatis factory.

10
Symbolic Directions
The nearest method for the correction of the time of birth is
our theory of symbolic directions. For every completed year
take one degree. Add this to the angles (I, 4, 7, 10), to the
luminaries, and to the planets. Take each such progressed
factor - one a~ a time, and note what aspects it forms with
positions of these in the given natal chart. The aspects to be
noted are conjunction, opposition (180 deg.) trine (120 deg, 240
deg.I, square (90 deg., 270 deg.I, sextile (60 deg., 300 deg.I,
insile (72 deg., 144 deg, 216 deg.), semi square (45 deg., 315
deg.), sesquiquadrate (135 deg., 225 deg.). and quincunx (150
deg., 210 deg) , Though in actual interpretation of a chart we
give three to eight degrees of an orb, here in the symbolic
directions there is no orb. The aspect mus t be exact. The
rulership and placement of the planets detennines when an
aspect is go<XI or bad, and what effects of the concerned houses
it gives. Thus a square between Jupiter and Venus ca n be
better than a trine. The trine between Mars and Saturn can be
worse than a equare.
We have to note the exact date when an aspect is formed.
The prime factors involved are the ascendant, seventh and
tenth house cusps, the Sun and the Moon. From the date of
the aspect, the result will spear after seven months and before
eleventh months. When actually it happens is to be determined on the basis of the past events. Thus Mercury and
Venus take generally eight months, Moon and Jupiter take
nine months, Sun and Neptune take ten months, and the

119

Symbolic Directions

others take eight, nine or ten months. The exact time thus
arrived at must coincide with major period, minor period, and
the 8ubperiod of this minor period. If only one indicates a
certai n result, it is not reliable. It will be much better if we
also consider Jaimini's Chara and Sthira dasas. Of these three
at least two must agree.
Of the other aspect the Treckcile (l08 deg., 324 deg.) can
be good and favourable. Vigintile (18 deg.) and Decile (36
deg.). may not be favourable. Parallel (30 deg.) is desirable.
But in applying the theory oC symbolic directions, we can
ignore these. Even the 80 called 22 1/2 deg. aspect may be
considered in judging health problems.
An illustration will make the application of the theory of
symbolic directions clear. This is because the result of an
aspect in a given chart can take place after ten months, or
after ten and a half months. But it does not go beyond one
month. With the help of the Vimshottari system we can pinpoint the time. Take the chart ofa native born on 1920.1.22 at
11.06 A.M. aST). First tabulate when the aspects orand to the
luminaries, lagna, seventh house, and the tenth house are
formed. We have to tabulate them eeparateJy. Take the degrees as years, and at the rate of five minutes per month
convert the minutes and second into months and days. Add
the figures to the date of birth.

the last two equal. This requires deducting two seconds from
the given time of birth. But we have to wait till we notice the
other aspects. Consider the Moon.
I. Me 28.44.34 = 48.10.19 + 9.12
2. Aoc 23.59.0 =44.1.16 + 8.26
3. Aso.l 53.59.0. 74.1.16 + 8.26

The Moon as a malefic gave a new job by the middle of

July. 49 and he gave it up on the first of Aug., 49. The
conjunction of the Mc was not favourable. It was in Guru-

Guru-Rahu. The second is a square and it gave an uneasy

position. It was in Rahu-Ravi-Rahu. The third brought disciplinary proceedings. The trine was malefic. It was in Shan iChandra-Chandra . The trine was as unfavourable as the
square because the malefic Moon is with the sixth lord . The
last brought about a highly serious ailment of the wife. It was
in Budha-Ravi-Shukra.
Let us look at some other aspects to the four factors mentioned earlier:

We have taken only a few examples to illustrate how the

symbolic Directions work.

1,3. Mars as the lord of the ninth (hips) is square to Me;

and on May 17, 1933 he was hospitalised. Thirty years later
he redeemed the pledge. These were in Rahu-Guru-Budha (6
a relation) and in Guru-Rahu-Ravi. The square was unfavour
able to Mars.

2. There was a serious set-back in his aim to get the

highest degree. It was in GuruBudha-Chandra and Kuja.
4. This period gave him an important footing in his carrel'.
It was in Guru-Curu-Guru.

5,6. These offered important improvements in his carrel'.

They coincide with Guru-Budha-Budha-Rahu and BudhaShukra-Budha. The trine a nd sextile were favoUl'able.
7. The square brought a substantial amount to clear his
obligations. The square was beneficial, like the trine. It was in
Shani-Rahu-Chanrlra.
8. It was a grand felicitation function in Budha-BudhaGuru. Budha is in Guru's house Bnd Guru is exalted . The
tenth house is involved both ways.
9, 10. Shukra is the lord of the third which is the twelfth
from the fourth. The mother passed away in Budha-ShukraShani. Budha is in the Maraka house for the mother, and
Shukra in the twelfth from him has Saturn in square.

11. The opposition brought about a serious limitation in

his career; and this made him work hard for a better past. It
was in Guru-Ravi-Guru. Ravi and Guru have a near 6-8 relation.
12. The sextile brought honou r and recognition. This was
Budha-Budha-Ravi. The sextile was favourable.
13. The conjunction of Uranus suddenly caught him in a
legal battle. It was forced on him and won. The conjunction
first gave worry and then peace. It was in Shani-BudhaShanL
14. The opposit ion of Neptune gave him continuous financial benefits. It was Budha-Shukra-Budha.
In this way we can find the aspects of the planets to and
from these four factors and relate them to the Vimshottari.
This will provide a tolerably correct rectification of the time of
birth.

Symbolic Directions

We commend this method . It should be related also to

Tables I, II, III and IV presented in Chapter III. If the result
predicted on the basis of the symbolic directions agree
with those given by the Vimshottari system, then on the
basis of the tables I, 111 and VI given in Chapter III the time
of birth can be corrected to the nearest Ghatis and
Vighatis.
