    Chapter 1

    Introduction

This book will give the facts and methods you’ll need to use self-hypnosis in learning.

Self-hypnosis isn’t sleeping. Although you are relaxed, and frequently you’ll see hypnotherapists saying things like; Your going deeper and deeper to sleep it isn’t actually true, you are not going to sleep. This book is will debunk a lot of those types of myths, and to give you a number of ways that you can use self-hypnosis for self-development and learning.

Once you are hypnotised you can use the state to enhance your learning with:

    1. Concentration and flow

    2. Memory enhancement

    3. Time Distortion for Review

The first is when you give yourself post-hypnotic suggestions that you’ll say a key-word or perform a key-action, then you’ll enter into a state of concentration and flow. This state then allows you to ignore distractions and to work on your learning objective.

The second is when that you give yourself post-hypnotic suggestion that you will remember everything you have read. You can use self-hypnosis with memory technigues like page summation. Page summation is when you reach the end of each page in a book, you summarise the information you read in a paragraph back to yourself. This can be done aloud, on paper, or mentally. The point is that the reiteration of the information in your own words helps cement the information in your mind.

The third method is probably the most useful. When you are doing something interesting or having fun you know that your time perception shortens, i.e. it appears to have flown by. However when you are doing something you dislike the time drags along. This method tries to use this change in the perception of time to your advantage and the way that it works is to allow you to compress time. This is best explained by example.

Lets assume you are taking a class, or in school or privately. After the lesson you might sit down quietly and hypnotise yourself lightly. You are then in a state sort of like day-dreaming and you simply watch in your mind the entire class or lecture. You let yourself relive the lesson. You can relive an entire hour long class in just a few minutes, which means you could review the class 3-4 times in 30 minutes. This would be like attending the same class 4-5 times.

    How Does Self-Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis is a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. It is a state of increased relaxation occurring at the same time as increase mental concentration. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, in other words only willing participants can be hypnotised.

Hypnosis utilizes a natural mental process. We all know that
