Welcome to the 2013 AMEB Victoria Enrolment Handbook. This Handbook is intended to provide the information you need to enrol candidates for AMEB exams in Victoria. Details of examination requirements can be found in the 2013 Manual of Syllabuses Music, available to purchase from AMEB Victoria, music retailers or online. It is important to note that only material in the current syllabuses can be presented for examination. Within each syllabus there are a number of regulations, requirements and objectives for each level. If, once you have read the syllabus, you have any questions please contact us to clarify any aspects that may not be clear.
AMEBs new online services
AMEB is now offering a greater number of services online. This year, for the first time, syllabuses will be available for purchase online, individually or in subject groups, from the new AMEB Online Music Shop, found on the AMEB Federal website (www.ameb.edu.au). AMEB Connect remains a useful way for teachers to gain online access to candidates exam scheduling information and results.
Syllabus changes
A new Flute syllabus, accompanied by a range of supporting publications, is now available. The old version of the Flute syllabus (as published in the 2012 Manual) will continue to be available for examination in 2013, alongside the new syllabus. However, it is important to indicate which syllabus your candidate is presenting for examination on each enrolment form. A number of old syllabuses are being withdrawn at the end of 2012 or at the end of 2013. Please refer to Music Syllabus News in this Handbook or go to the relevant page on the AMEB Victoria website for more information about these changes.
AMEB Online Theory exam expansion
The range of AMEB Theory exams available online will further expand in 2013. At the time of publication, online examinations are available for Theory of Music, First Grade Fourth Grade; Musicianship, First Grade Third Grade; and Music Craft, Preliminary Grade 3 (Grade 4 will be available early in 2013). Higher grades will be released progressively. For more information, please refer to the Written exam section of this Handbook or go to: www.amebexams.edu.au. Interactive AMEB Theory of Music Online courses are also available in First and Second Grade from the AMEB online course website (www.amebtheory.edu.au).
Early exam sessions and special exam sessions
We urge you to consider enrolling candidates for practical exams in Term 2 or 3. These sessions are less busy so we are better able to accommodate your scheduling requests, with the added benefit that candidates will be able to avoid exams clashing with end of year activities in Term 4. Please note that some subjects are only offered in special sessions in July and November. These are: Accordion, CPM, Electronic Organ, Ensemble, Harp, Organ, Recorder and Percussion. However, it is possible for exams in these instruments to be scheduled outside published session dates, if there is sufficient examining time in a particular location. Please contact us if you would like to find out more about this possibility.
Enrolling information
Once examinations have been programmed, it is very difficult to make changes to the timetable so please remember to write any special requests on the enrolment form and submit forms before the closing date. These special requests include: dates to avoid, such as school camps; or special needs, such as a candidate with a disability. More information about enrolment forms can be found in this Handbook. AMEB is here to promote and recognise achievement in music and we wish you every success with your teaching or music studies this year. The Australian Music Examinations Board

Australias most widely used music assessment service, the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) offers syllabuses and graded examinations for a wide range of musical instruments, music theory, singing and speech, from beginner through to higher grades and on to diploma level.
About AMEB Victoria
Promoting and recognising musical achievement
AMEB has been promoting and recognising musical achievement since 1887. Regarded as the benchmark for assessment in music, speech and drama in Australia, AMEB exams provide nationally recognised levels of achievement in practical and theoretical subjects. AMEB syllabuses provide the framework for studies leading to secondary school certificates, university entrance and the establishment of careers in performing and music teaching.
Maintaining benchmark standards
To maintain benchmark standards, AMEB is committed to continuous review of its syllabuses and publications to ensure they are up to date with evolving educational principles and practices, and teachers are invited to contribute to the review process. The high standards set by AMEB are in turn upheld by a panel of examiners who are specialists in their field.
AMEB Victoria
AMEB Victoria conducts graded music and speech exams in Melbourne and country Victoria. A non-profit organisation wholly owned by the University of Melbourne and governed by a Board of Directors, AMEB Victoria is one of six state offices within the federated AMEB structure. The AMEB Federal office is responsible for publishing and promoting syllabuses and syllabus-related publications, while AMEB Victoria is responsible for all exams conducted in Victoria.
Supporting Victorian teachers and students
A number of workshops are organised by AMEB Victoria each year to provide teaching tips and information about specific syllabuses and services while AMEB masterclasses give students the opportunity to perform and receive constructive feedback. In 2013, a Professional Development Program will be scheduled for music teachers, designed to support preparation for the AMEBs Associate Teacher of Music, Australia Diploma (ATMusA).
AMEB Victoria structure
The AMEB Victoria Board of Directors, appointed by the University of Melbourne receives advice from an Examinations Advisory Committee, which includes members with expertise in education, training and assessment. Each Victorian examiner is a member of their respective subjects Specialist Examining Panel, which meets regularly to discuss examining matters and engage in professional development activities. Day-to-day operations are the responsibility of the General Manager.

Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony
The AMEB Victoria Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony will be held on Tuesday 26 March 2013, commencing at 6pm in The Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, Parkville. To celebrate the release of the new Flute syllabus, AMEB and Yamaha are giving you the opportunity to win a solid silver flute with B foot valued at $2,499. Buy any AMEB book released as part of the 2013 Flute syllabus and you can enter the draw to win this exciting prize. The competition closes on 31 March 2013. Online Theory examinations
Online examinations are currently available in Theory of Music, First Grade Fourth Grade; Musicianship, First Grade Third Grade; and Music Craft, Preliminary Grade 3 (Grade 4 available in early 2013) with further grades in development. Music Craft Preliminary Grade 4 will only be available online in 2013 but all other AMEB Theory exams are offered in the traditional Written sessions. Please see the Written section of this Handbook for more information.
Online Theory courses
AMEB Online Theory Courses are now available in Theory of Music First and Second Grade. The courses allow students to work through the syllabus at their own pace when preparing for online exams.
Piano workshops and masterclasses
In 2013, AMEB Victoria will present a series of Piano workshops and masterclasses in Melbourne and regional centres. For more information about the workshop series, go to the AMEB Victoria website.
Professional Development Program
In 2013, AMEB Victoria will provide a program of lectures, seminars and workshops designed to support preparation for the AMEBs Associate Teacher of Music, Australia Diploma (ATMusA). This Diploma has a status equivalent to the Associate Diploma in practical and theoretical subjects, and teachers who achieve the ATMusA are recognised as having successfully undertaken a comprehensive study of issues relating to private studio teaching. Participation in the AMEB Professional Development Program does not assume enrolment in any of the three sections of the ATMusA examination. Teachers may prefer to attend some or all units of the program to become more familiar with current music pedagogy and issues facing the instrumental (or vocal) teacher today. Sunday Practical examinations
The availability of Practical examinations on Sundays is now a permanent feature in the AMEB Victoria schedule. Please note, exams can be scheduled on any day in the session, Monday Sunday, between 9am and 6pm (except public holidays) unless we receive a written request to avoid particular days. Please see further details about how to indicate this on your enrolment form in the Exam Enrolment Information section of this Handbook.
Website enrolment form
On the AMEB Victoria website, you will find two versions of the Practical and Written enrolment forms: a printable PDF and a Microsoft Excel form. The PDF can be completed manually in the usual way but the Excel form is linked to a list of Subject Numbers and fees. This means you will spend less time writing subject details and the total fee for the form is calculated for you. Once complete, just print the form, sign it and send it to AMEB by post, fax or as a scanned attachment to an email. Candidates should present for examination in accordance with the syllabus, requirements and regulations prescribed in the current syllabuses published by Australian Music Examinations Board Limited. The 2013 Manual of Syllabuses Music is available for purchase from the AMEB Victoria office and music retailers. Syllabuses are also available as digital downloads for purchase, individually or in subject groups, from the AMEB Online Music Shop.

Additional requirements Certificate of Performance
From 2013, candidates presenting for the Certificate of Performance examination are required to achieve a Pass in Fourth Grade Theory of Music, Musicianship or Music Craft in order to complete the requirements for the principal exam. It should be noted that additional requirements do not apply to the Certificate of Performance examinations in Piano for Leisure, Saxophone for Leisure or Singing for Leisure.
2012 syllabus: A new Bassoon syllabus was introduced in 2012. This syllabus was completely redesigned, with new and exciting repertoire in the Manual Lists and a carefully designed and appropriately sequenced regime of technical work, the full details of which appear in Bassoon Technical Work (2011). This syllabus includes the Certificate of Performance, as a culmination of Level 2 examinations. Alternative syllabuses: In 2013, candidates may present for examination using either the new Bassoon syllabus as published in the current syllabus or the old syllabus from the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses. The syllabus chosen for examination must be presented in its entirety. Notice of withdrawal of the old syllabus: The old Bassoon syllabus (version last printed in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses) will be withdrawn from examination at the end of 2013. From 2014, only the new Bassoon syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: Enrolments for examinations in the new Bassoon syllabus should use the new Subject Numbers; the words new syllabus should be specified on the entry form; all exam documentation should show the letters NS appearing after the grade description (e.g. Bassoon 1st Grade NS). The absence of the letters NS will indicate to the examiner that the candidate is presenting for examination in the old syllabus. Publications: Bassoon Technical Work (2011) is available for use with the new Bassoon syllabus. The following books can only be used with the old Bassoon syllabus (as published in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses): Bassoon Technical Work (1992) and Bassoon Technical Work (revised edition 1999) and are therefore not applicable to the new syllabus.

Withdrawal of the old Cello syllabus: The old Cello syllabus, last printed in the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses, has been withdrawn from examination. From the start of 2013 only the Cello syllabus shown in the current syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: As the only Cello syllabus now available for examination is the version published in the current syllabus, it will not be necessary to indicate new syllabus with the letters NS. Withdrawal of the old Clarinet syllabus: The old Clarinet syllabus, last printed in the 2008 Manual of Syllabuses, has been withdrawn from examination. From the start of 2013 only the Clarinet syllabus shown in the current syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: As the only Clarinet syllabus now available for examination is the version published in the current syllabus it will not be necessary to indicate new syllabus with the letters NS.

2012 syllabus: A new Classical Guitar syllabus was introduced in 2012. As well as the redesign of the technical work demands (the full details of which appear in Classical Guitar Technical Work (2011)), this syllabus features wholly revised Manual Lists that draw
on some of the most attractive recent publications for the Classical Guitar. This syllabus includes a new examination, the Certificate of Performance, as a culmination of Level 2 examinations. Alternative syllabuses: In 2013, candidates may present for examination using either the new Classical Guitar syllabus (as published in the current syllabus) or the old syllabus from the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses. The syllabus chosen for examination must be presented in its entirety. Notice of withdrawal of the old syllabus: The old Classical Guitar syllabus (version last printed in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses) will be withdrawn from examination at the end of 2013. From 2014, only the new Classical Guitar syllabus will be available for examination. Flute
New syllabus: A new Flute syllabus will be available for examination in 2013. As well as a comprehensive review of the technical work requirements culminating in Flute Technical Work (2012), this syllabus features new Grade Books that now begin at Preliminary and extend up to Sixth Grade. This syllabus includes two new examinations, Preliminary at the beginning of the syllabus and the Certificate of Performance at the culmination of Level 2 examinations. The Grade Books include exciting and challenging repertoire in a range of styles and the syllabus also features wholly revised Manual Lists that draw on some of the most attractive recent publications for the Flute. A new Sight-Reading book, Flute Sight-Reading (2012), following specially designed sight-reading parameters, has also been produced to accompany the new syllabus. This syllabus will be examined concurrently with the Flute syllabus that last appeared in the 2012 Manual of Syllabuses for two years after the release of the new syllabus. During these two years the new syllabus will be evaluated and from the start of 2015 the previous Flute syllabus will no longer be available for examination. Examination entries: Enrolments for examinations in the new Flute syllabus should use the new subject numbers and the words new syllabus should be specified on the entry form. All exam documentation should show the letters NS, appearing after the grade description (e.g. Flute 1st Grade NS). The absence of the letters NS will indicate to the examiner that the candidate is presenting for examination in the old syllabus. New publications: The following publications can be used with the new syllabus: Flute Technical Work (2012) Flute Series 3 (Preliminary Sixth Grade) (2012) Flute Sight-Reading (2012) Flute Series 2 (First Grade Fourth Grade) (2000) It should be noted that the following publications cannot be used with the new syllabus: Flute Series 1 (1991/1992) Flute and Piccolo Technical Work (revised 1998) Flute and Piccolo Orchestral Excerpts (1998) These books may only be used with the Flute syllabus that last appeared in the 2012 Manual of Syllabuses. Flute Sight-Reading (2000) does not contain indicative examples of the standard of the sight reading in the new syllabus, but may be used as an extra resource for practice purposes.

Music Craft
Online-only exams from Preliminary to Grade 4: Music Craft Preliminary Grade 4 (Grade 4 will be available online in early 2013) will only be available online from 2013. For more information, please go to the Written Exams section of this Handbook.

Grades 5 & 6: Music Craft Grades 5 and 6 were introduced in 2010. These grades develop the remaining chords of the diatonic harmonic palette, commence building skills in counterpoint and continue the development of aural acuity. These examinations are available in the Second Written Session in August. Publications: The following publications are available for these grades: Music Craft Essential Exercises Grade 5; Music Craft Essential Exercises Grade 6.
Musicianship
Online Musicianship exams: Online Musicianship exams are now available from First Grade to Third Grade with more in development. All Musicianship grades are also available for examination in the traditional Written sessions. Memory question: From 2011, there has been a change to the Musicianship syllabus, First Grade to Fourth Grade, removing the requirement to memorise folk songs. Memorisation of folk songs no longer forms part of either Written or Aural examinations (where appropriate) in Musicianship.
Online Syllabuses
Syllabuses are now available as digital downloads for purchase, individually or in subject groups, from the AMEB Online Shop. A printed version of the 2013 Manual of Syllabuses Music will also be available for purchase as in previous years.

Piano for Leisure
Withdrawal of the old Piano for Leisure Syllabus: The old Piano for Leisure syllabus, last printed in the 2010 Manual of Syllabuses, has been withdrawn from examination. From the start of 2013 only the current Piano for Leisure syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: As the only Piano for Leisure syllabus now available for examination is the version published in the current syllabus, it will not be necessary to indicate new syllabus with the letters NS. P Plate Piano
Publications for beginner pianists: The AMEB has responded to teachers requests for materials to develop pianists in the earliest stages of training by publishing the three volumes of P Plate Piano. These volumes, compiled by Elissa Milne and featuring some of her lively and engaging compositions, comprise a range of pieces intended to foster creative engagement with the instrument and with music at the beginning stages of pianistic development. P Plate Piano assessments: Special introductory, non-graded assessments offer goals for beginner pianists to aim for, recognition of their achievements and feedback on progress in developing the important fundamentals of piano-playing. Each assessment will be based solely upon the performance of three pieces selected from one volume of P Plate Piano (no technical work or any other requirements). The candidate will receive an attractive certificate at the end of the assessment and a report will be forwarded to the teacher. P Plate Piano assessments are designed to provide a friendly introduction to music examinations, and will lead comfortably and easily to the Preliminary examination experience. Saxophone
Withdrawal of the old Saxophone Syllabus: The old Saxophone syllabus, last printed in the 2008 Manual of Syllabuses, has been withdrawn from examination. From the start of 2013 only the current Saxophone syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: As the only Saxophone syllabus now available for examination is the version published in the current syllabus, it will not be necessary to indicate new syllabus with the letters NS. Withdrawal of the old Singing Syllabus: The old Singing syllabus, last printed in the 2010 Manual of Syllabuses, has been withdrawn from examination. From the start of 2013 only the current Singing syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: As the only Singing syllabus now available for examination is the version published in the current syllabus, it will not be necessary to indicate new syllabus with the letters NS. Publications: Publications available for use with the Singing syllabus include: Singing Series 2 (Preliminary to Fourth Grade) high voice or medium/low voice. Technical work for Level 1 is included in these volumes. Singing Technical Work Level 2 Singing Sight-Reading (2010) Singing Series 1 Grade Books cannot be used with the current syllabus unless songs contained in the series have been listed in the Manual Lists for the new syllabus. Songs drawn from these books may be used as Extra List works at teacher and candidate discretion. Singing Technical Work (revised edition 1998) may not be used with this syllabus. Singing: Sight Singing for Teachers and Students (2000) does not contain indicative examples of the standard of sight-reading in this new syllabus. However, candidates and teachers may wish to use it to augment their sight-reading resources.

Theory of Music
Online Theory of Music exams: Online Theory of Music exams are now available from First Grade to Fourth Grade with more grades in development. All grades are also available for examination in the traditional Written sessions. Memory question: Since 2011, in First Grade to Fourth Grade, the requirement to memorise folk songs has been removed and no longer forms part of Written examinations in Theory of Music. Online Theory Courses: Online courses are now available in First Grade and Second Grade Theory of Music to prepare students for the Online Written exams in these grades. Violin
2012 syllabus: A new Violin syllabus was introduced in 2012. New, streamlined technical work, full details of which are in Violin Technical Work (2011), has been designed for this syllabus and the focus of the Manual Lists has been widened to include pieces from a range of idioms including bluegrass, Celtic, world and jazz. This syllabus includes a new examination, the Certificate of Performance, as a culmination of Level 2 examinations. Alternative syllabuses: In 2013, candidates may present for examination using either the new Violin syllabus (as published in the current syllabus) or the old syllabus from the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses. The syllabus chosen for examination must be presented in its entirety. Notice of withdrawal of the old syllabus: The old Violin syllabus (version last printed in the 2011 Manual of Syllabuses) will be withdrawn from examination at the end of 2013. From 2014, only the new Violin syllabus will be available for examination. Examination entries: Enrolments for examinations in the new Violin syllabus should use the new subject numbers and the words new syllabus should be specified on the entry form. All exam documentation should show the letters NS after the grade description (e.g. Violin 1st Grade NS). Enrolment Information
AMEB Victoria Exam Enrolment Process

It is common practice for teachers or schools to submit entries as agents for their students. If you are the teacher or school representative enrolling candidates, you will receive all correspondence relating to your students examinations and will be able to co-ordinate the preparation of candidates and arrange accompanists, if required. Note that enrolment forms can only be accepted from adults. Private entries should be submitted by the parent or guardian of candidates aged under eighteen.
Before completing your enrolment form

1. Become fully acquainted with the current AMEB examination syllabus, requirements and regulations (which may change from year to year) and the administrative policies and procedures notified in this Handbook. Additional information and downloadable forms are available from the AMEB Victoria website (www.ameb.unimelb.edu.au). Find out when the Practical and Written exam sessions will take place (listed in this Handbook and on the AMEB Victoria website), noting the closing dates for enrolments and the fact that Practical exams can be scheduled on any day in the published exam session (Monday Sunday), between the hours of 9am and 6pm, except gazetted public holidays. It is possible to request that exams are not scheduled on a weekend but this must be indicated on the enrolment form, submitted by the closing date. Inform candidates and parents of examining arrangements and enrolment conditions and ask if there are any dates in the session that should be avoided for the following reasons: VCE exams, school exams, curriculum days, school camps, religious holidays, special events or other exceptional situations. AMEB Victoria will make every effort to avoid specific dates if these are written on the enrolment form and supporting documentation is supplied by the closing date for enrolments.

Completing your enrolment form

1. Complete one enrolment form per session using a Practical or Written enrolment form downloaded from the AMEB Victoria website or obtained from the AMEB Victoria office. To expedite processing and minimise data entry errors, please ensure that the enrolment form clearly includes: The Client/Teacher Number from previous years, if relevant. New teachers and private entrants will be allocated numbers when their first enrolment is processed. The Examination Session for example: 1st METROPOLITAN refer to the examination session and enrolment dates in this Handbook or on the AMEB Victoria website. The Centre Code refer to the Exam Centre Codes in this Handbook or on the AMEB Victoria website. Candidates Numbers from previous sessions. This will ensure that a candidate is not given multiple numbers. New candidates will be allocated numbers when their first enrolment is processed. This number is used for data matching. The correct spelling of each candidates name as it should appear on the certificate. Each candidates date of birth to ensure correct data matching. The appropriate Subject Number for each candidate (note that new syllabuses have new numbers). The appropriate Subject Name/Grade for each candidate (new syllabuses should be indicated NS). Any special requests relating to dates to be avoided, special needs or examination venues. This should be written on the form or on a separate document and must be submitted at the time of enrolment by the enrolment deadline. Please note that a Practical exam can be scheduled on any day in the published exam session unless we receive prior notification that the candidate is not available on a particular day. For more information, see Dates to be avoided in the Supplementary Enrolment Information section of this Handbook.

Information about candidates entering for more than one subject in the same session. This should be written on the form provided or on a separate document attached to the form. A signature from the person aged 18 or over who is responsible for the enrolments on the form. When you sign the enrolment form you are confirming that you, the candidates, their parents and their teachers are aware of and accept the policies, regulations and examination requirements published in the current AMEB syllabus and the current AMEB Enrolment Handbook.
Submitting your enrolment form

1. Calculate the fees for all candidates and include only one cheque, money order or credit card authorisation for a teacher, private entrant or schools total enrolments in each session. Cash payments cannot be accepted. Note that enrolments will not be accepted until fees have been received (i.e. credit card payments successfully processed or cheques cleared). Submit your enrolment form and any requests by post, scanned attachment to an email or fax before the closing date for the relevant examination session. (Emailed or faxed enrolments cannot be accepted unless the credit card authorisation has been signed.) Retain a photocopy of all paperwork for reference and the transmission report, if submitting entries by fax.

Confirmation of Enrolment from AMEB Victoria

1. Check that you have received a Confirmation of Enrolment from AMEB Victoria within 14 days of submitting your enrolment form. Confirm that all details are correct (including spelling of candidate names) and advise necessary amendments within 7 days.
Receiving your Notice of Examination

1. 2. Advise AMEB Victoria if you have not received a Notice of Examination for all your candidates three weeks prior to commencement of the examination session. Inform your students when and where the exam will take place and arrange an accompanist, if necessary. Make sure your student takes their Notice of Examination to the exam and presents it to the Supervisor.
After the exam

1. As the person responsible for the enrolment, you will receive examination reports and certificates for the AMEB Victoria exam candidates you enrolled. Please give these to your candidates at the earliest opportunity.
AMEB Victorias responsibilities

Provide information about enrolment requirements including enrolment closing dates and examination fees. Arrange Practical examinations involving the determination of examination sessions; scheduling of examination times, dates and venues; engagement of examiners; and provision of examination materials. Arrange Written examinations involving the arrangement of venues and equipment; co-ordination of examinations; engagement of supervisors and written assessors; and provision of examination materials. Supply information about examinations including fee schedules, session dates, Enrolment Handbook, website information, AMEB syllabuses (for purchase) and past papers (for purchase), Confirmation of Enrolment reports, Notice of Examinations, results and certificates.

Accepted paperwork
Entries will be accepted only on the enrolment form provided by the AMEB Victoria office or downloaded from the AMEB Victoria website (www.ameb.unimelb.edu.au). The required subject numbers, centre codes and fee schedules are included in this Handbook. Note that private entries from candidates under eighteen years of age cannot be accepted; an entry for a candidate under eighteen years must be made by a school, teacher, parent or guardian acting as an agent for the candidate. An electronic scan of a completed AMEB enrolment form will be accepted by fax or e-mail attachment, provided that all information is clearly legible and the credit card authorisation and certification are both signed. It is important that teachers retain fax transmission reports as it is not possible for AMEB to confirm the receipt of faxed entries over the phone.

Alternative venues practical examinations
Requests from schools or teachers for practical examinations to be conducted at a venue other than the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn or official Country Centres (as listed in this Handbook or on the AMEB Victoria website) should be made in the space provided on the enrolment form. Teachers may wish to collaborate to make up three hours of examining time in a particular subject and offer a common studio for a particular session. The host school or studio teacher will be responsible for supervision of the examinations.
Alternative venues written examinations
Schools may request that written examinations be conducted on school premises, on the basis that the school will be responsible for supervision of the examinations. A Written Exam Venue Request form should be submitted together with the examination entries.
Communication with the enrolling person
Enrolments will be confirmed via the Confirmation of Enrolment which will be sent by AMEB Victoria to the enrolling person within 14 days of receipt of a completed enrolment form. Parents and candidates should note that results, certificates and partial refund of fees (if applicable) will be provided only to the enrolling person (teacher, school or private entrant). Exam timetable information will normally be given only to the enrolling person. However, in emergencies, timetable information will be given to parents and candidates, provided that they can supply all of the following details: the teachers name and address, candidates name and date of birth, and the subject and grade for which the candidate is enrolled.
Dates to be avoided
Before submitting entries, teachers are advised to consult with students and parents regarding the most suitable session in which to enrol; and dates within the practical examination session that should be avoided. A candidate should be prepared to present for his/her practical examination on any day of the week (including weekends), between 9am and 6pm, on the first day or any other day of the session unless an acceptable request has been made in advance. Supporting documentation: Requests to avoid particular dates should be made at the time of enrolment and will only be considered when substantiated by supporting documentation. Such requests will be considered only if related to religious holidays, school exams, school camps, curriculum days, special events or exceptional situations. Every effort will be made to accommodate requests based on the above reasons. However, it will not be possible to accommodate requests made for any other reason. Requests that examinations be scheduled at the end of a session (or similar), for no adequate reason will not be accepted.
Weekend exam scheduling: The availability of practical exams on Saturdays and Sundays is a permanent feature of the AMEB Victoria exam schedule. It is important that we are advised if candidates are not available for examination on any or all weekends during the particular session. The enrolment form provides a place to indicate that a candidate is not available for examination on weekend days, as follows: If a candidate is not available for examination on Saturdays write S If a candidate is not available on Sundays write U If a candidate is not available on BOTH Saturdays and Sundays write B
Dates to avoid form: Requests for dates to avoid should be made in the space provided on the enrolment form. Alternatively, a separate Dates to Avoid form can be completed and attached to the enrolment form. It is important that requests are made at the time of enrolment, as it may not be possible to change the date of an examination once it is scheduled and any change will be subject to a re-scheduling fee. Unless requested otherwise, examinations of all students enrolled by a particular teacher or school for a particular subject will be scheduled consecutively on the same day or over several days, depending on the number of candidates.
Enrolment acceptance
Enrolments are accepted by AMEB Victoria on the understanding that teachers, private entrants, candidates and parents agree to the policies and procedures notified in this Enrolment Handbook and on the AMEB Victoria website and accept that assessments shall be made strictly in accordance with the syllabus, requirements and regulations prescribed in the current AMEB syllabus.
Examination dates and times
A candidate enrolling for an AMEB Practical examination should be prepared to present for examination at any time during the published session dates, unless a reasonable request for dates to be avoided has been submitted. AMEB Practical examinations are scheduled between the hours of 9am and 6pm, from Monday to Sunday inclusive during each session, except on gazetted public holidays. Please note that practical examinations might be scheduled on independent school holidays, curriculum days and VCE exam dates unless these dates are specifically advised to AMEB Victoria as dates that should be avoided. Exams might be scheduled on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday preceding the Melbourne Cup public holiday unless we have been advised in writing that they are dates to be avoided. However, exams are not scheduled on Melbourne Cup Day.
Late entries
A late enrolment period of up to seven (7) calendar days after the closing date will apply to each session. All late entries will incur a late entry fee of $20.00 (including GST) per candidate, up to a maximum of $100.00 per teacher or school. Entries lodged within the late enrolment period will be accepted only if accompanied by the late entry fee. After the conclusion of the late enrolment period, entries will be accepted only at the discretion of the General Manager, subject to the availability of examiners and examination venues, and only if accompanied by a special administration fee of $80.00 (including GST) per candidate.
Payment of enrolment fees
Only one cheque, money order or credit card authorisation per enrolment form is acceptable. Cash cannot be accepted. Cheques should be made payable to: AMEB (Vic) Ltd. Current fees are listed in the Subject Numbers and Fees section of this Handbook and on the AMEB Victoria website. Please appreciate that processing multiple enrolment forms from a teacher for a particular session creates considerable additional work, as does the receipting and banking of multiple cheques. Current procedures are designed to keep examination fees as low as possible and ensure efficient customer service. Therefore, multiple payments from a teacher or school for a particular session will be accepted only if an additional administrative fee is paid (fee advised on application).

Subject Numbers and subject changes
Enrolment information for each candidate is managed according to the Subject Number indicated on the enrolment form. It is therefore critical that the correct Subject Number for each candidate is provided. AMEB Victoria cannot accept responsibility for adding Subject Numbers to enrolment forms. Subject Numbers are listed in the Subject Numbers and Fees section of this Handbook and on the AMEB Victoria website. A teacher or private entrant wishing to change the subject or grade of a practical examination after the Confirmation of Enrolment has been issued and the seven-day period for advising amendments has elapsed, will be required to pay a re-scheduling fee equivalent to 75% of the enrolment fee. For information about changes to Written exam enrolments, please refer to the Written section of this Handbook.

Special needs
AMEB Victoria is committed to providing quality examinations for all candidates, including those with disabilities. We aim to ensure that all candidates have access to the examination process and are able to demonstrate their skills in the examination to the best of their ability. Candidates with disabilities will be offered the same examining standards as those applied to all other candidates. No concessions are made regarding the assessment criteria used. However we will make special provisions for candidates who provide medical documentation of their disabilities and the special assessment needs which these necessitate. We must be informed of the candidates special assessment needs in writing at the time of enrolment, or as soon as practicable after that time if a condition becomes apparent or worsens after the closing date for entries. A request should be submitted for each examination for which the candidate enrols, as information about special needs will not be retained for subsequent exams. The applicant (if 18 years or over) or their guardian must sign their application for special provisions to confirm that they give permission for the candidates special needs to be provided to the examiner. Recent medical documentation of the candidates disability must be attached to the application. Where there is significant additional cost in providing special examination conditions, such as the provision of a separate venue or additional supervision, it may be necessary for AMEB to charge a fee to cover the incremental cost of providing the additional service. Full details of our Special Needs policy can be found on the AMEB Victoria website.
Website enrolment form
On the AMEB Victoria website, you will find two versions of the Practical and Written enrolment forms: a printable PDF and a Microsoft Excel form. The PDF can be printed off and completed in the usual way but the Excel form is linked to a list of Subject Numbers and fees. This means you will spend less time writing subject details and the total fee for the form is calculated for you. Once complete, you just print off the two sides of the form, sign it and send it to AMEB by post, fax or as a scanned attachment to an email. Withdrawals, cancellations and refunds
A candidates enrolment cannot be transferred from one examination session to another or from one candidate to another. Teachers are requested to advise AMEB Victoria in writing if a candidate is to be withdrawn from examination. If written advice is received by the closing date for receipt of enrolments for the session, the examination fee, less an administration fee of $10.00 per candidate, will be refunded. If a candidate is unable to attend a scheduled examination, teachers are requested to contact the office as soon as possible and to confirm the telephone advice in writing. After the closing date, when a cancellation is due to illness and substantiated by a medical certificate, consideration will be given to a refund of 50% of the examination fee, provided that the evidence is submitted no later than two weeks after the scheduled exam date. A refund will not be given when the cancellation is for any other reason. Please appreciate that, by the time cancellations are received, examination schedules have usually been finalised and examiners must be paid for their time when candidates do not attend as originally scheduled.

AMusA Practical examinations
Teachers and private entrants are advised to carefully read the objectives for the Associate examinations listed in the current AMEB Syllabuses before entering for the examination. The Associate Diploma is highly respected in the international music community and recognises a sophistication of musical understanding and performance abilities that are well above the requirements for Eighth Grade. The success rate for AMusA is much lower than for Grade examinations. To avoid disappointment, it is therefore suggested that teachers with limited experience in presenting candidates at Diploma level obtain advice from an experienced teacher before entering candidates for AMusA.
AMusA and LMusA examination rehearsals
Associate and Licentiate Practical examinations are held only in Studio 1 at the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn, which is equipped with a Steinway Model B grand piano. Candidates wishing to rehearse in the studio may do so when it is not being used for exams. Availability is limited so candidates are advised to book rehearsal times well in advance. Hire fees are payable and the Studio can be booked by calling the AMEB Victoria office.
Certificates completion of additional requirements
A candidate who has previously completed a Sixth Grade, Seventh Grade, Eighth Grade, Certificate of Performance, Associate Diploma or Licentiate Diploma Practical examination should notify AMEB Victoria upon completion of the Additional Requirement. Certificates for Grade examinations will then be released. Diploma certificates will be awarded at the next Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony.
Conferring of Diplomas
Successful Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship candidates, who have provided AMEB with evidence of their completion of any Additional Requirements, will be invited to attend the annual Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony. The Ceremony at which diplomas will be formally conferred upon candidates who successfully completed all requirements in 2012 will be held on Tuesday 26 March 2013, commencing at 6pm in The Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, Parkville. A successful candidate who is not able to be present to receive his/her award in person will be admitted in absentia to the diploma and the certificate will be mailed following the ceremony.
Page turning
A page-turner may be used by candidates and/or accompanists. Accompanists and pageturners may only remain in the examination room when actually required.
Photocopies
Candidates presenting for examinations should comply with the requirements of the Australian Copyright Act (1968). Further information on copyright in relation to print music is available from the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society Limited (AMCOS) on 02 9935 7700. The Practical Copyright Guide to the Use of Print Music in Australia (published by APRA/AMCOS) may be downloaded from: www.apra.com.au. The Guide states that examination candidates should perform from original print music or a licensed copy (page 16). In relation to downloaded materials from the Internet, the Guide observes that quite a lot of musical works are illegally included on websites (page 12) and suggests that if you wish to reproduce any musical works that are published on the internet, you should contact AMCOS for advice.

It is not possible to re-schedule a Practical examination from one session to another (cancellation and refund procedures apply see Supplementary Enrolment Information section of this Handbook). However, a teacher or private entrant may apply for a Practical examination to be re-scheduled within the same session. In the case of illness, the application must be accompanied by appropriate documentation and payment of a re-scheduling fee of 50% of the examination fee. An application to re-schedule a practical examination for any other reason (excepting illness) must be accompanied by a re-scheduling fee of 75% of the examination fee. The application should identify the candidate, teacher or school and be accompanied by the candidates original Notice of Examination, supporting documents, a list of dates to be avoided, and the appropriate re-scheduling fee. The availability of a substitute examination time cannot be guaranteed, and acceptance of the application will be subject to the availability of a qualified examiner and suitable facilities. If it is not possible to re-schedule the examination within the same session, the re-scheduling fee will be refunded.
Re-scheduling of Practical examinations

Re-scheduling of Written examinations
It is not possible to re-schedule a Written examination from one session to another (cancellation and refund procedures apply see Supplementary Enrolment Information section of this Handbook). However, a candidates Written examination may be re-located from one centre to another, provided that the application is accompanied by a re-scheduling fee of $40.00 and it is received at least fourteen days prior to the date of examination. Approval will be subject to the availability of seating at the requested centre. Similarly, a request to change a candidates grade will not be accepted unless it is received at least fourteen days prior to the examination, together with a rescheduling fee of $40.00.
Teachers and accompanists
As it is the examining authority, it is not appropriate for AMEB Victoria to recommend teachers or accompanists for AMEB examinations. The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music has a list of accompanists which can be found at: www.conservatorium.unimelb. edu.au/staff/accompanists. In addition, the Victorian Music Teachers Association (VMTA) has a list of music teachers and accompanists. For further information, visit the VMTA website (www.victorianmusicteachersassociation.org.au).
Teacher consultations
A teacher may request a 30 minute personal consultation with an AMEB Examiner, which would be timetabled at the end of a days examining. The examiner will provide general tips and suggestions relating to the preparation of candidates for AMEB examinations. Although these suggestions might be based upon the examiners observations of recent examination performances by a teachers students, it would not be appropriate to discuss examination results or specific examination reports. Consultations with examiners will be available during most 2013 practical examination sessions (except Licentiate Sessions), subject to programming constraints. Registration for a Teacher Consultation can be made via the Practical examination enrolment form.
Warm-up
For candidates presenting for examinations at the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn, warm-up facilities will be offered to candidates in Piano Eighth Grade, Certificate of Performance, Associate and Licentiate; all Singing and all Instrumental subjects. Candidates may be accompanied to the warm-up room by their accompanist and teacher. Warm-up facilities are provided for the purpose of warming-up and tuning instruments; candidates and accompanists should not expect to have sufficient time to rehearse repertoire. Note also that the availability of warm-up facilities at other examination venues cannot be guaranteed and should not necessarily be expected.

A school or private studio enrolling candidates for a total examining time of three hours or more, in a particular subject, during published session dates can apply to host Practical exams and this should be indicated on the enrolment form. If you wish to host Practical exams outside the published session dates, please contact us before enrolling candidates to discuss your preferred dates so that we can check examiner availability. Traditional paper-based exams are available in two sessions, as follows: Written Examination Dates 21 May 22 May 20 August 21 August Closing Dates for Entries 20 March 29 May
Details of examination dates and times are provided on the following pages. Please note that: Music Craft Preliminary to Grade 4 are now available online only. Music Craft Grades 5 and 6, Teaching Certificates and Diplomas are available in the 2nd Written session only. Entries must be received by the published closing date, so that the processing of enrolments, scheduling of examinations and dispatch of notices can proceed in a timely manner. Late entries will only be accepted if accompanied by payment of the applicable late entry fee (see Late entries in the Supplementary enrolment information section of this Handbook).
Aural examination regulations
Due to the nature of aural examinations, it is essential that candidates present for examination at the scheduled time. Candidates will not be permitted to enter the examination room once the exam has commenced, due to the disturbance this creates and the inconvenience to other candidates. At the commencement of Aural examinations, candidates will be given a short listening time, in order to become familiar with the sounds used on the recording. Before the end of the examination, at the conclusion of the recording, candidates will be given ten minutes checking time during which writing is permitted. It is not possible to re-schedule a written examination from one session to another (cancellation and refund procedures apply). However, a candidates written examination may be re-located from one centre to another, provided that the application is accompanied by a re-scheduling fee of $40.00 and it is received at least fourteen days prior to the date of examination. Approval will be subject to the availability of seating at the requested centre. Similarly, a request to change a candidates grade will not be accepted unless it is received at least fourteen days prior to the examination, together with a re-scheduling fee of $40.00.

How to Enrol for Online Theory Exams

1. 2. 3. Online Theory exams can be taken online at any time, within twelve months of purchase, for: Theory of Music, First Fourth Grade Musicianship, First Third Grade Music Craft, Grades 1 3 (Grade 4 available in 2013)
Higher grades will be added to the system from 2013 onwards. Candidates and teachers benefit from unlimited practice exam opportunities and quick results.
Register on the site to become an Account Holder
A teacher, parent or candidate aged 18 or over can register free of charge for the site and create a unique username and password. Once registered, you will become an Account Holder with access to tutorials, sample exams and the ability to purchase exams.
Written Exams
Buying an exam
Once registered as an Account Holder, you can buy an exam at any time for an individual candidate or a group of candidates who can take the exam at the same, or different times. When entering details, you will need to supply the candidates full name as it appears on the AMEB Victoria database and correct date of birth, which is important for data matching. Candidates must complete their online theory exam within twelve months of purchase.
Candidate Exam Key and password
When buying an exam for a candidate, you will need to select a password that the candidate will use every time they access tutorials, practice exams, or the exam itself. Once you have purchased an exam, the candidate will be issued with an Exam Key, a unique code which gives access to practice and actual exams when used with the correct password.
Buying exams for groups of students
You have two options when purchasing exams for a group of students. The first option allows enrolment of a number of candidates for a variety of subjects and grades. The second option allows enrolment of multiple candidates to do the same subject and grade at the same time. All candidates entered under this option will be presented with an identical set of questions for their exams. However, if a candidate enrolled under the group exam option is absent from the exam time set for the group, he/she can take the exam at a later date but will be presented with a different set of questions.
Tutorials
The video tutorials show all the techniques required to complete the exam questions. The more important techniques include: using the up and down arrow to select an answer; using the dragging tool to change a note, write a scale or add beams; using the drawing tool to draw slurs: and using the eraser tool to correct mistakes.
Practice exams
Candidates can login to the system using their Exam Key and password to take practice exams at any time. Practice exams are timed and candidates can work through the questions in any order. In the lower grades, candidates will be able to see the marking for each section as they go along and see the result for each practice exam immediately after completion. In higher grade exams, the practice exam cannot be marked by the system but the candidates answers are saved onto the system to be reviewed with teachers or parents at any time. This applies to Theory of Music, Fourth Grade and above; Musicianship, Third Grade and above; and Music Craft, 3rd Grade and above.
Starting an exam
When a candidate (or group of candidates) is ready to take an actual exam, they should login using the Exam Key and password. On the Start Exam page, a supervisor is required to electronically sign a declaration that the candidate is working alone without the aid of materials or personal assistance. Supervisors are asked to give a mobile phone number and are randomly contacted for verification of this statement. The exam is timed and will be submitted for marking when the time allocation has been reached or when the candidate clicks Finish, whichever is first.
Exam results
In the lower grades, the system marks the exam instantaneously and the candidate can immediately see the exam result. The teacher or parent who enrolled the candidate for the exam can also login to see the result and review answers with the candidate. This applies to: Theory of Music, First to Third Grades; Musicianship, First and Second Grades; and Music Craft, Grades 1 and 2. For higher grades, an examiner will mark the exam manually and three or four business days after completing the exam, the candidate will receive an email notifying him/her that the exam has been marked. The teacher, parent and candidate can then login to see the results and review the answers.
Exam certificates
Results for online theory exams are received by AMEB Victoria weekly and certificates are mailed to the enrolling person in the usual way. The result will also appear on the teachers history of candidate results, which the teacher can view online if registered for AMEB Connect.

Online Theory Courses

Online Theory courses are currently available at www.amebtheory.edu.au for Theory of Music First and Second Grade. The courses are self-guided and can be completed at any time within 12 months of purchase and activation. Benefits of online theory courses include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Parents can purchase a course and then assign the student to a teacher. Every lesson comes with a practice test that is graded and timed. Teachers can communicate with students via the messaging feature and login to see practice test results for each student. Tests are automatically marked and results are available immediately. The course precisely matches the syllabus for the online exam and the types of question and tools used to provide answers are the same as those used in the online exam.
