Introduction
Purpose of the Guide
This guide describes the installation procedures and features for the eVision mediaCAT electronic catalog product. This guide is written to support eVision mediaCAT version 3.23. Some figure illustrations may reference earlier versions of mediaCAT, which indicates there is no change from the earlier version.
1.2.
Product Overview
mediaCAT is an electronic catalog software product that is distributed on a CDROM to users who need quick and efficient access to sales and / or service documentation for a specific manufacturer product line. The mediaCAT CDROM contains two types of information: a. The mediaCAT electronic catalog software. b. An electronic catalog containing sales and / or service documentation for a manufacturer product line. The mediaCAT CD-ROM containing the software and electronic catalog is distributed periodically by the manufacturer or their authorized distribution agent when updates to the mediaCAT software or electronic catalog are required.

mediaCAT Software vs. Electronic Catalog

The mediaCAT software is a series of programs designed to read the information in the electronic catalog. mediaCAT software is similar in concept to a microfiche reader in that it is the technology needed to read microfiche. The electronic catalog is a large, electronic file containing all documents that are published by the manufacturer. The electronic catalog is similar in concept to the microfiche sets that are periodically published by the manufacturer. Both the mediaCAT software and the electronic catalog are required to access and view documentation on your computer. The mediaCAT software must be installed on each computer where you intend to view the electronic catalog. The mediaCAT Software Installation section provides stepby-step instructions for installing the mediaCAT software. The mediaCAT software can read the electronic catalog directly from the CDROM or from your computer hard drive. The Electronic Catalog section provides step-by-step instructions for instructing mediaCAT to read the electronic catalog from the CD-ROM drive or from your computer hard drive.

mediaCAT Software Installation

Computer Requirements
The mediaCAT viewer is a Microsoft Windows compatible software application. The minimum computer hardware prerequisites include: Pentium 700 MHZ Windows 98SE, NT with SP6, ME, 2000 with SP3, XP, Vista 256 MB RAM 100 MB available hard drive to install viewer software 4x CD-ROM drive SVGA Monitor with minimum 800 x 600 resolution Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater CPU 2 Ghz Windows 2000 with SP3, Windows XP, Windows Vista 512 MB RAM 700 MB of hard drive 40x CD-ROM / DVD drive SVGA Monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater

2.2.
Starting the Setup Program

Manually start the setup program as described herein if the mediaCAT autorun feature is disabled on your computer. You must have logged on to your Windows system with a user id that has Windows administration rights. The setup program used to install mediaCAT on your computer is located on the CD-ROM that was distributed by the manufacturer. Locate the setup program named Setup.exe as follows: a. Insert the mediaCAT CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on your computer. b. In the lower left hand corner of your computer screen is the Windows Start button as shown in figure 2-1. Position your mouse pointer over the Start button and then right-click your mouse to display a menu as shown in figure 2-1. Select the 2nd entry in the menu named Explore by left-clicking on the entry with your mouse. Figure 2 1 Start Windows Explorer
c. The Windows Explorer screen will appear as shown in figure 2-2 after selecting the Explore menu option. The left hand side of the Windows Explorer screen shows a list of the drive letters that are installed on your computer (e.g. Local Disk C:, Local Disk D:, etc.). One of these drive letters will correspond with your CD-ROM drive. Drive letter E: corresponds with the CD-ROM drive as shown in figure 2-2. You will also note that drive letter E is

prefixed with the characters SCS-8600-02-2007. This is the CD-ROM label that indicates Service Communication System (SCS), 8600 (U.S. market) and the release date of 02-2007. Left-click with your mouse on the label and drive letter corresponding with the mediaCAT CD-ROM. This will instruct Windows Explorer to show the contents of the CD-ROM in the right hand section of the Windows Explorer screen as shown in figure 2-2. Figure 2 2 Windows Explorer
d. The right hand side of the Windows Explorer screen lists several folders and files that are contained on the CD-ROM. Locate the Setup file and doubleclick on this entry with your mouse to launch the mediaCAT setup program.

2.3.
Installation Welcome
a. The first screen that will appear after starting the Setup program will be the welcome screen as shown in figure 2-3. mediaCAT can display screen information in several languages as shown in the language selection box. Select your default language preference that will be used to guide you through the remaining installation steps and then click on the Next button. Figure 2 3 Welcome Screen

b. mediaCAT will display a license agreement acceptance screen as shown in as shown in figure 2-4 once you select your language preference. Select the I Agree or I Do Not Agree button to confirm or reject the terms of the license agreement and then click the Next button. mediaCAT will terminate the installation process if you do not accept the terms of the license agreement. 2.4.
Installation Steps
a. The mediaCAT installation process will ask for registration information when it is ready to install mediaCAT on your computer as shown in figure 2-5. Enter your company information and then click on the Next button to proceed. This information is used for printing reports and enabling the 3rd party business syste interface. b. mediaCAT catalogs can be accessed from the CD-ROM or you can optionally copy the catalogs to your computer hard drive. Figure 2-6 provides you with information so you can decide if you want to leave the catalog on the CDROM or whether you want to copy the catalog the hard drive. c. The screen shown in figure 2-7 displays the catalogs that are stored on the CD-ROM. Select the large checkbox to the right of the company logo if you want to copy the catalog from the CD-ROM to your computer hard drive during the installation process. The catalog WILL NOT be copied to your computer hard drive if you leave the checkbox unselected. The Install To and Default Path buttons become enabled if you choose to install the catalog onto your computer hard drive. The catalog will be installed to a Windows shared folder by default (the Default Path button), or you can optionally choose the Install To button to choose your own installation path preference. Choosing the Install To button will display a Windows Explorer type screen that allows you to select your folder preference for installation. Click on the Next button once you have chosen your catalog installation preference. Figure 2 7 mediaCAT Catalog Installation Selection

d. Next you will be prompted to confirm the destination location of where the mediaCAT software will be installed on your computer work as shown in figure 2-8. It is strongly recommended that you accept the default destination folder that was selected by the installation routine. You can change the destination folder to a location of your choice by selecting the Browse button and specifying a different location. Do not attempt this destination folder change unless you are an experienced computer administrator. Confirm the selected destination folder(s) or change the folder and then click on the Next button. e. mediaCAT now has the information it needs to install both the software and the catalogs as shown in figure 2-9 and is ready to begin installation. Click on the Install button to begin installation. Figure 2 9 mediaCAT Install Confirmation

f.
The install shield wizard will begin copying the mediaCAT program files as shown in figure 2-10. The message shown under the hour glass tells you that program files are being copied. It should only take a few minutes to complete the installation process depending on the speed of your computer. Figure 2 10 Installation in Progress

g. The install shield wizard will begin copying the catalog files to your computer hard drive if this was your preference as selected in step 2.4.c. The message shown under the hour glass tells you the installation routine is copying the catalog files as shown in figure 2-11. h. The Install Shield wizard will give you an installation complete message as shown in figure 2-12. This screen will appear for a few seconds and then be automatically removed by the install shield wizard. Figure 2 12 Installation Complete
2.5.
Network Considerations
Refer to the mediaCAT Network Installation Guide if you wish to install mediaCAT in a networked environment.
2.6.
Terminal Server
mediaCAT v3.19 and higher supports terminal server implementations. Your computer administrator must install the mediaCAT software and then all client computers can access mediaCAT over the terminal server.

Start the mediaCAT Software

b. A list of Windows options will appear as shown in figure 3 1. Select the All Programs option to display a list of software programs currently installed on your computer as shown in figure 3 2. Figure 3 2 List of Installed Programs
c. Locate the program named MediaCAT and select this entry to start the mediaCAT software program. mediaCAT will commence an initialization process, and when complete, the primary mediaCAT screen will appear as shown in figure 3 3. Refer to the mediaCAT Software Installation section if the icon does not appear and you have not installed the mediaCAT software.

3.2.
Explanation of Primary mediaCAT Screen

The mediaCAT primary screen is divided into three areas; a toolbar menu, an options menu, and a primary viewing area as shown in figure 3 3. Figure 3 3 Primary mediaCAT Screen
3.2.1. Toolbar Menu The toolbar menu area contains seven navigation buttons. These buttons include: a. Close button used to terminate the mediaCAT software application. b. Back button used to navigate backwards in a document catalog. The back button is similar in function to the Back button in your Internet browser. c. Print button used to print documents or transactions. d. Open Transaction Administration button used to open the Transaction Administration feature of the mediaCAT software. e. Help button open the help screen to access the mediaCAT help system.

Favorites button used to add or remove documents and / or products to your list of frequently accessed Favorites list.
g. Business System button indicates if mediaCAT is connected to a 3rd party business system. Red indicates disconnected and Green indicates connected. 3.2.2. Options Menu The options menu contains four navigation buttons that allow you to access and control the primary features of the mediaCAT software. These buttons include: a. Settings used to configure the primary operating characteristics of the mediaCAT software. b. Catalogs used to specify which document database you want to access. c. Find used to access the advanced search features of the mediaCAT software. d. Documents displays a list of available documents from the document database for the selected catalog. The documents are displayed in a Windows Explorer type document hierarchy. An options menu will expand to show the submenu options that are available when the option is selected. 3.2.3. Primary Viewing Area The primary viewing area is used to display the selected document as shown in the figure 3 5 example. This example displays spare parts list document in the primary viewing area. Figure 3 5 Sample Document in Primary Viewing Area
3.3.
mediaCAT Language Selection

The mediaCAT software can be used in several languages. You will want to ensure that the language selection is set to your desired preference. The following steps allow you to change the mediaCAT user interface language. a. Select Settings from the options menu to display the submenu options as shown in figure 3 4. b. Set Language is the third submenu option from the bottom of the Settings options menu. Select the Set Language submenu option to display the language selection screen as shown in figure 3 6. Use your mouse and click on the drop down arrow to display the list of languages supported by mediaCAT.

c. Scroll through the list of supported languages and select your language preference. Click on the OK button to confirm your language selection and mediaCAT will immediately change the user interface language. Figure 3 7 shows what happens when the Japanese language is selected.

d. Changing back to your native preferred language may be problematic if you are unfamiliar with the currently selected user interface language. It is important therefore that you memorize the location of the mediaCAT language selection option. Remember: i) Select the Settings options menu, which is the first options menu item as shown in figure 3 7.
ii) Select the Set Language option, which is the third submenu option from the bottom as shown in figure 3 7. iii) You can then change your language preference as shown in figure 3 6.

4.1.
Electronic Catalog
Documents included on the CD-ROM
The electronic catalog is a large electronic file containing sales and / or service documents. Contact your Stihl distribution center if clarification is needed on the documents contained within the electronic catalog on the CD-ROM.
4.2.
Accessing the Electronic Catalog

The mediaCAT software reads and displays documents from the electronic catalog in the primary viewing area. The electronic catalog is stored on the mediaCAT Service Communications System CD by default. You can also copy the electronic catalog from the CD to the hard drive on your computer, and mediaCAT can then read the electronic catalog from the computer hard drive. Reading the electronic catalog from your computer hard drive is faster than reading from a CD-ROM drive. Figure 4 1 Electronic Catalog Read Options
You must configure the catalog settings to instruct mediaCAT where to access the electronic catalog; from the CD-ROM or from your computer hard drive. mediaCAT looks for a file named STIHL-SCS-03-2007-USA.CIF to determine where the electronic catalog is located. You will look for this file when configuring the catalog settings for CD-ROM access or computer hard drive access. You will note from figure 4 2 that the STIHL-SCS-03-2007-USA.CIF file is in the same location on the mediaCAT CD-ROM as the setup program was located.

4.3.
Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM

Accessing the electronic catalog directly from the CD-ROM has the advantage of requiring no additional computer hard drive space. The disadvantage is the document access will be slower based on the speed of your CD-ROM drive. Use the following procedures to configure mediaCAT for accessing the electronic catalog directly from the CD-ROM. a. Insert the Stihl mediaCAT Service Communications System CD-ROM into your computer CD-ROM drive. b. Start the mediaCAT Software if you have not already done so. c. Select Settings from the options menu to display the submenu options as shown in figure 4 3. Figure 4 3 Settings Submenu Options

e. The list of catalogs contained within the Install / Uninstall Catalog form will initially be empty as shown in figure 4 4. Your task is to add an entry to this list that corresponds with the location of the STIHL-SCS-01-2006-USA.CIF file. Locate the entry in the Windows browse file screen that corresponds with your CD-ROM drive and select the root directory entry as shown in figure 4 5 since this is where the .CIF file is located. Note: Do not select the subfolders named Setup, STIHL and Tutorial. Click on the OK button once you have selected the root directory entry.

4.4.
Accessing Documents from the Computer Hard Drive

** NOTE ** The following steps are performed if you DID NOT install the catalog to our hard drive during the software installation process. Refer to Section 2 mediaCAT Software Installation instructions. Accessing the electronic catalog from your computer hard drive has the advantage of quicker access since a hard drive can retrieve documents faster than a CD-ROM drive can retrieve documents. The disadvantage is that additional computer resources will be required in the form of computer hard disk space, which of course has an associated cost. You will need approximately 600 megabytes (MB) of unused hard disk space to install the electronic catalog on your computer hard drive. Use the following procedures to configure mediaCAT for accessing the electronic catalog from your computer hard drive. a. You may need to delete a previous version of the mediaCAT Service Communications System electronic catalog from your computer hard drive if you are applying an update to a previous version of the CD. Refer to the Removing Electronic Catalog Access section if you are processing an update and first need to delete an older version of the electronic catalog to ensure you have enough free space on your computer hard drive. b. You will first need to complete the steps outlined in the section Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM. The reason for this sequence is to identify the location of the electronic catalog that mediaCAT will copy to your computer hard drive; the Stihl mediaCAT Service Communications System CD. c. With the Settings options menu still selected as shown in figure 4 3, click again on the Catalog Settings submenu option to display the Install / Uninstall Catalog form as shown in figure 4 7. h. It is no longer necessary to maintain the CD-ROM access entry in the list once you have copied the electronic catalog to your hard drive. You can refer to the Removal of CD-ROM Access section once you have copied the electronic catalog to your computer hard drive. Another option is to maintain the CD-ROM entry in the list to be used for future updates to the electronic catalog. Caution should be exercised however when retaining the entry in the list; if the mediaCAT Service Communications CD is kept in your CD-ROM drive then mediaCAT is reading the electronic catalog from the CD-ROM instead of your computer hard drive. i. Refer to the Verify Catalog Settings section to confirm that you have properly configured mediaCAT to read the electronic catalog from your computer hard drive.
4.5.
Removing Electronic Catalog Access

An updated mediaCAT Service Communications System CD is produced and distributed on a recurrent schedule throughout the calendar year. This CD contains an updated electronic catalog and may contain an updated version of the mediaCAT software. You shall need to repeat the steps outlined in Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM or Accessing Documents from the Computer Hard Drive for each mediaCAT Service Communications System CD update to enable access to the updated electronic catalog. Update processing however introduces the need to remove references to outdated editions of the electronic catalog. The procedures for removing the catalog settings for a electronic catalog are slightly different between CD-ROM document access and computer hard drive document access. Both processes however begin with the selection of Settings from the options menu to display the submenu options as shown in figure 4 3. Next select Catalog Settings from the submenu options to display the Install / Uninstall Catalog form. Complete the electronic catalog removal instructions as outlined below depending on whether you use CD-ROM or computer hard drive to access the electronic catalog.

4.5.1. Removal of CD-ROM Access Removal of CD-ROM access to the electronic catalog is performed after you have received an updated mediaCAT Service Communications System CD and no longer need access to the outdated electronic catalog. Removal is also performed after copying the electronic catalog from the CD to your computer hard drive. Follow the procedures outlined below to remove access to the electronic catalog on the CD-ROM. a. Select the CD-ROM list entry that you wish to remove and click the Remove catalog button as shown in figure 4 11. Each electronic catalog is quite large and it would not be an efficient use of your computer hard drive space to retain outdated electronic catalogs. Follow the procedures outlined below to remove access to the electronic catalog on your computer hard drive. a. Select the computer hard drive list entry that you wish to remove and click the Delete catalog button as shown in figure 4 13. Click the Close button to close the Install / Uninstall Catalog screen and complete the catalog settings configuration.

Verify Catalog Settings

If the primary viewing area does not contain the Stihl logo as shown in figure 4 17 then you have either: a. Incorrectly configured the catalog settings and should repeat the steps outlined in the sections Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM or Accessing Documents from the Computer Hard Drive. b. You have configured the catalog settings to use the CD-ROM as outlined in the section Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM, and have subsequently removed the Stihl mediaCAT Service Communications System CD from your computer CD-ROM drive. 4.7.
Network Considerations
The steps outlined in the sections Accessing Documents from the CD-ROM or Accessing Documents from the Computer Hard Drive need to be repeated for each computer in your network where the mediaCAT software is installed. You will need to configure the catalog settings to point to the location of the STIHLSCS-03-2007-USA.CIF file on your computer network. The shared network location must be switch free for the client computers if a policy has been established.

5.
Selecting Documents
mediaCAT provides a number of methods to access documents from the electronic catalog. The document selection and document viewing in the Stihl electronic catalog are best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher. Please refer to your Windows operating system for instructions on setting your computer screen resolution.
5.1.
Selecting the Electronic Catalog

mediaCAT can be used to select catalogs for more than one manufacturer (e.g. Stihl, IBEA, etc.). Use the following procedures to select the Stihl electronic catalog. a. Select Catalogs from the options menu. mediaCAT will expand Catalogs to show the submenu options and display the manufacturer logo in the primary viewing area as shown in figure 5 1. b. The Stihl logo and other information appears in the primary viewing area as shown in figure 5 1 to identify the electronic catalog. Other information includes: i) The catalog version centered in the blue title section above the Stihl logo. ii) A catalog language selection. Some mediaCAT Service Communications System CDs will contain multiple catalog languages, and this selection entry allows you to change the catalog language. Note: there is a difference between the mediaCAT user interface language which is configured with the Set language option in the Settings options menu, and the electronic catalog language. You can for example select English as the mediaCAT user interface language, and then view Stihl documents in German, if German is an available language in the electronic catalog. c. Click on the Stihl logo in the primary viewing area to select the Stihl electronic catalog in the language that is specified in the catalog language selection.

5.2.
Document Hierarchy Selection

a. mediaCAT will display a document hierarchy as shown in figure 5 3 once the Stihl electronic catalog is selected. This document hierarchy will show a list of all documents that exist in the electronic catalog organized into folders; Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Tools, Construction Equipment, Cleaning Systems, and General Information. b. The document hierarchy as shown in figure 5 3 appears in two locations; once in the lower left hand portion of the options menu prefixed by the icon, and once in the upper right portion of the primary viewing area. In both cases the documents that exist in the electronic catalog are not yet visible. You must first open the individual folders to see the documents within the folders. For demonstration purposes we will view Illustration A Crankcase, Crankshaft assembly for the model 028 gasoline powered chainsaw. Open the folder named Chainsaws as shown in figure 5 4 by clicking once on the preceding the chainsaws folder icon or by double-clicking on the chainsaws folder in the primary viewing area.

c. The chainsaws folder as shown in figure 5 4 does not have any documents in the folder, but is instead made up of the subfolders Gasoline Chainsaws, Electric Chainsaws, Saw Mills, Sharpeners, and Rivet Spinners and Chain Breakers. Open the gasoline chainsaws subfolder as shown in figure 5 5 by clicking once on the preceding the gasoline chainsaws subfolder icon or by double-clicking on the gasoline chainsaws subfolder in the primary viewing area.

d. The gasoline chainsaws subfolder as shown in figure 5 5 does not have any documents in the folder, but instead is made up of a list of gasoline powered icon preceding the product number chainsaw product numbers. The indicates that the entry is a product. You will also observe from figure 5 5 that this product number list is quite long and that mediaCAT has added scroll bars in the options menu and primary viewing area to allow you to scroll through the list of product numbers. Scroll through the product number list in the options menu until you find product 028. Product 028 is already visible in the primary viewing area and shows product 028 consists of 028, 028 Q, 028 W, 028 WB models. Open the catalog for product 028 as shown in figure 5 6 by clicking once on product 028 in the options menu or double-clicking product 028 in the primary viewing area.

e. The mediaCAT Service Communications System contains three different types of documents: i) Spare Parts List documents that are stored in a special Stihl format. These documents are identified with the icon preceding the document title. The Viewing Spare Parts Lists section contains instructions on how to view these document types.
ii) Reference manuals that are stored in an Adobe .pdf file format. These icon preceding the document title. documents are identified with the The Viewing Adobe PDF Manuals section contains instructions on how to view these document types. iii) Special tool documents that are stored in a special Stihl format. These documents are identified with the icon preceding the document title. The Viewing Special Tools section contains instructions on how to view these document types. The illustration A Crankcase, Crankshaft document is the first document in the list. Open this document as shown in figure 5 7 by clicking once on the

Favorites
The mediaCAT favorites feature provides the ability to maintain a list of frequently used documents and then navigate directly to these frequently used documents. mediaCAT allows you to add, modify and delete favorites within specific folders.
6.1.
Adding Favorites
a. Only documents can be added to the favorites folder(s). Begin by selecting product 009, Gasoline Chain Saw to display the list of available document as shown in figure 6 1. Figure 6 1 Product 009 Document List

b. The Documents options menu has been expanded to show the list of submenu options as shown in figure 6 1. The third submenu option named Add to favorites is used to add documents to your favorites list. Viewing Spare Parts Lists
Spare parts lists are a type of document contained within the Stihl electronic catalog. This section describes the mediaCAT features that enable you to easily view the spare parts lists and obtain service related information.
7.1.
Image Positioning
mediaCAT displays both spare parts image and text information in the primary viewing area as shown in figure 7 1. The image is positioned on top and with the item number information positioned in a list on the bottom by default. Figure 7 1 Default Image and Text
The toolbar menu contains (5) additional buttons ( ) as shown in figure 7 1 for repositioning the image and item number information. The buttons allow you to reposition text and image as i) image left, ii) image right, iii) image bottom, iv) image top and v) image only. Reposition the image by single clicking on each button.

Image and spare parts list may vary for each Stihl product depending on the model number. The top of the spare parts list contains a product selection entry field as shown in figure 7 4. Selecting Document Hot Spots

The spare parts list images contain reference numbers that are highlighted in a blue box. These reference numbers contain image hot spots that function like links in an Internet browser. The spare parts list contains a list of all reference numbers and item numbers that appear on the image. The item numbers also contain links to the reference number on the image. Single click a reference on the image and mediaCAT will find the item number in the spare parts list as shown in figure 7 11. You can also single click on an item number from the spare parts list and mediaCAT will find the reference number on the image. A selected reference number is highlighted in red on the image and the selected item number line in the spare parts list is highlighted in blue as shown in figure 7 11. Item Number Quick Reference

The reference numbers in the image are enabled with a quick reference. mediaCAT will display this quick reference information when you move your mouse pointer over the image reference number as shown in figure 7 12. Figure 7 12 Quick Reference

Standard columns that appear in the spare parts list are identical to printed documentation and include Reference Number, Item Number, Quantity, Description, Notes, Technical Publication, From and Up to. The first column in the spare parts list is a yellow Note column and is a link to manufacturer or personal notes. The untitled column between the Reference number and Item number is used to display legend symbols that are used in the Stihl spare parts list.

This eliminates the need to manually maintain inventory information in mediaCAT. Refer to the section mediaCAT Interface for information on how to interface mediaCAT with your 3rd party software system. Clicking the Save button with the mediaCAT Interface enabled will force an update to your manually maintained inventory information using information from the business system. This ensures mediaCAT has access to inventory information in the event your interface is temporarily inoperative.

This Adobe Acrobat Reader software is installed during the mediaCAT Software Installation process. It is beyond the scope of this mediaCAT User Guide to replicate the help system that comes with Adobe Acrobat Reader. This user guide will provide the basic information needed to navigate through the Adobe PDF manuals and documents contained in the electronic catalog.

You can page through an Adobe PDF document by pressing the Page Up and Page Down keys on your computer keyboard. Single click on the Adobe PDF document within the primary viewing area if the page up / page down keys on your computer does not cause the Adobe PDF document to scroll up or down. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a separate program and sometimes your computer does not know if the cursor is highlighted in the Adobe Acrobat Reader program or within other programs running on your computer. Single clicking on the Adobe PDF document tells your computer to set the cursor within the Adobe Acrobat Reader program.

The Compare Parts List Form contains two columns; a From column and a To column as shown in figure 10 2. There are two selection entry fields for each column; one for Product and one for Documents. We want to compare the spare parts list from product 009 to product 012. Select 009 from the From product selection entry field and then select 012 from the To product selection entry field. Next we want to compare the spare parts list for a specific document. Select B, Crankcase (35, 85), (25, 84) for the product 009 document. Then select A Crankcase for the product 012 document. Your Compare Parts List form should appear as it does in figure 10 2.

The results list shows the first item numbers for gasket, connecting rod, thrust washer and cover plate do not exist in the product 012 A Crankcase spare parts list and have been deleted. The next two items of gasket and cylindrical pin are identical in both spare parts list. Then a flat head screw is used in both spare parts lists, but product 012 uses (5) of these screws instead of the (4) used in the product 009 spare parts list. Then a long list of new item numbers exist in the product 012 spare parts list that dont exist in product 009, and these items show as an added item. d. Single click on the Close button when you are done using the Compare Parts List feature.

mediaCAT provides the ability to create and maintain different shopping carts for orders, warranty, invoice or estimate transactions. You can create and maintain as many shopping cart transactions as you need.
11.1. Create Shopping Cart

The New Transaction form contains the Type selection entry field as shown in figure 11 4. Select the drop down arrow to see the available options of Purchase Order, Warranty, Invoice, and Estimate. The supplier selection entry field contains a list of suppliers that you maintain in the Supplier Administration feature of mediaCAT. You are required to select a supplier from the selection entry field when the shopping cart transaction type is either Purchase order or Warranty claim. Select Invoice or Estimate from the Type selection entry field and observe that the title Supplier will change to Customer. mediaCAT assumes that invoice and estimate shopping cart transactions are for customers (not suppliers) and will ask you to select the customer from the selection entry field. You can select the new entry button ( ) next to the supplier / customer selection entry field if the supplier or customer does not exist. This new entry button ( ) will instruct mediaCAT to open either the Supplier Administration or Customer Administration form and enable you to add the supplier or customer. The Short Name data entry field is the default name assigned to the shopping cart transaction. Change the name to something more meaningful such as Weekly Order for Stihl. Single click the OK button to create the new transaction.

The Add to Current Transaction form asks for confirmation that you want to add the item number to the shopping cart transaction named Weekly Order for Stihl as shown in figure 11 5. The Current transaction selection entry field contains a list of other open shopping cart transactions that you have created. You can assign the item number to a different shopping cart transaction by changing the Current transaction selection entry. You can also create a new current transaction by selecting the New transaction button ( ) as shown in figure 11 5. You then repeat the process for creating a new transaction as shown in figure 11 4. Single-click on the OK button once you have selected your shopping cart transaction and mediaCAT will add the item number to the shopping cart.

Assigning the item group A or B to a specific item number will result in that item number having a selling price of 10.00 or 25.00 respectively. You can add additional item groups by clicking once on the Add button. Select an item group line from the list and single click the Delete button to remove an item group.

A 5 percent selling price discount will be calculated on item numbers assigned to item group A if a minimum quantity of 10 are purchased for the item number. A 15 percent selling price discount will be calculated on item numbers assigned to item group B if a minimum quantity of 11 are purchased. You can add additional discount groups by clicking once on the Add button. Select a discount group line from the list and single click the Delete button to remove a discount group.

You will close a transaction once you have finalized its contents and are ready to print and give to a customer (e.g. invoices and estimates) or send to a supplier (e.g. purchase orders and warranty). mediaCAT provides the ability to import an entire price file containing pricing information for a specific supplier. The mediaCAT interface is an optional feature that enables the exchange of information between the mediaCAT software and an external software application such as a business management system. Information that can be exchanged includes: Price information for specific item numbers. Inventory on-hand information for specific item numbers. Stock location for specific item numbers. Purchase orders. Customer information. Supplier information. Item number information. Notes. Special offers for parts. Remote control commands to invoke certain mediaCAT electronic catalog functions.
Your software provider has access to a mediaCAT Interface Guide that provides detailed instructions on how to implement the mediaCAT interface. Most of the information exchange between mediaCAT and your business management system happens transparently without any overt actions required by you. The Import Price List and Import Stock Information are two activities however that require specific actions to effect the information exchange.
16.1. Interface Enabling

The mediaCAT Interface is not immediately enabled after mediaCAT Software Installation. The interface is an add-on feature that must be enabled by the vendor who provides and / or supports your business management system. The enabling process however is not complex and contains two steps: a. A mediaCAT interface enabling request to your software provider. Refer to the mediaCAT Interface Tab in the Personal Settings section for information on how to create and send the enabling request. b. Your software provider will send you an interface definition file that configures mediaCAT to properly communicate with your business management system. This interface definition file needs to be loaded into mediaCAT and will enable the interface. Refer to the mediaCAT Interface Tab in the Personal Settings section for information on how to load the interface definition file that is sent by your software provider.

16.2. Import Price List

Refer to the Import Price List instructions in the Price Maintenance section for information on how to import pricing information from your business management system into mediaCAT.
16.3. Import Stock Information

The mediaCAT interface can automatically obtain stock information from your business management system if your software provider implemented the automatic stock transfer feature. mediaCAT can also accept and process a stock information file that periodically updates stock information directly in the mediaCAT electronic catalog. You can invoke this manual stock update process by selecting the Import Stock Information submenu option that is listed in the Settings options menu as shown in figure 16 1. The Import Stock Information form will appear as shown in figure 16 1. The Import button will function once the mediaCAT interface is enabled and if your software provider has chosen to implement that periodic stock update process.

17. Personal Settings

mediaCAT provides several personal setting configuration options that allow you to control certain mediaCAT functions. Personal setting configuration is accessed by selecting the Personal Settings submenu option that is listed in the Settings options menu as shown in figure 17 1. The templates tab as shown in figure 17 4 provides the ability to enter standard text that will appear on documents when the selected shopping cart transaction type is printed. This standard text appears on printed transactions after the address information, but before the printed item numbers from the shopping cart. 17.4. E-mail Provider Tab

mediaCAT can convert certain transactions such as purchase order pick lists into e-mail messages, and then deliver these e-mail messages to the recipient. Enter your e-mail provider information in the E-mail provider tab as shown in figure 17 5. The e-mail host is not your e-mail address, but the host name such as smtp.starband.net. The user name and password are identical to what you have configured in your e-mail software (such as MS-Outlook) to logon to your email account. Figure 17 5 E-Mail Provider Tab

17.5. Shopping Cart Export Format Tab

You can export your shopping cart pick list from mediaCAT to your software system if the mediaCAT Interface is enabled. The Shopping Cart Export Format tab as shown in figure 17 6 allows you to specify the shopping cart information that will be exported. Select / unselect the Available fields checkbox to include / exclude the information in the exported shopping cart. You can also change the sequence of fields in the export file by selecting an Available field and clicking on the Move up or Move down buttons. The Separator selection entry field configures mediaCAT to use a specific character in the export file to separate the fields. The Standard export file is the name of the file that mediaCAT will create for the shopping cart export file, and the file name that your software system will retrieve and process. 17.6. mediaCAT Interface Tab

The mediaCAT Interface tab provides the ability connect the mediaCAT software to an external 3rd party business management system as shown in figure 17-7. Your 3rd party business system vendor creates an external file named Enabled mediaCAT Interface.txt This file contains the instructions needed by mediaCAT to send and receive information to / from your 3rd party business manage system. Click the Install button to locate the Enable mediaCAT Interface.txt that was provided by your software vendor, then select this file to enable the mediaCAT Interface. 18.1. Settings Tab

The settings that can be maintained include: a. Remember window size and position b. Retain Parts list column width settings You can resize the spare parts list column as described in the Resize Column Width section. These resized column width settings will remain temporary unless you place a green in the Retain parts list column width settings. c. Double-click on item number to display item information The Item Information form contains detailed information about a selected item number as shown in figure dd. The item information form is displayed by selecting the button within the spare parts list. Single clicking on an item number in the spare parts list invokes the Selecting Document Hot Spots feature and locates the selected item number on the spare parts list image. You can configure mediaCAT to display the Item Information form by double-clicking on the spare parts list item number as shown in figure xx. d. Show colours available in stock and Style This feature is enabled when mediaCAT is connected to an external 3rd party business system. The

reference numbers in the spare parts list will be color coded if you place a green in the Show colours available in stock. e. Help text transparency allows you set the transparency level on help text. f. Image information transparency allows you to set the transparency level on the Item Number Quick Refernece display.

18.2. Transaction Tab

The Shopping Cart Processing feature of mediaCAT creates transactions such as invoices, estimates and warranty claim pick lists. The settings tab allows you to establish several parameters for the overall operation of the mediaCAT software as shown in figure 18 3. Figure 18 3 Transaction Settings
The settings that can be maintained include: a. Path to save data mediaCAT assigns a default location for storing transaction information, but you can search for and select a different drive / directory location by clicking once on the Find button and navigating to a drive / directory of your choice. Caution should be exercised however when changing the destination location. mediaCAT will not automatically copy data from an old storage location to the new location that you specify. The data will be lost in your old location unless you manually use Windows operating system procedures to copy the old data to your newly specified storage location. b. Transaction retention days The transaction retention period indicates how long completed transactions will remain on your computer before being deleted by mediaCAT. c. Display menu item Add to current transaction - You can specify whether you want to use the shopping cart feature of mediaCAT. A green indicates you want to use this feature and the Add to current transaction will appear

throughout mediaCAT forms where shopping cart functionality is supported. You will also want to specify the transaction retention period (in days). d. Show prices in the parts list You can add additional columns to the spare parts list for item number pricing information. The Show prices in parts list checkbox located on the Transaction tab configures mediaCAT to display pricing information if the green is selected. mediaCAT will use pricing that you established with the Price Maintenance feature unless i) you have implemented the mediaCAT Interface feature, and ii) you select the Prices from software system checkboxes to configure mediaCAT to obtain pricing information from your software system e. Prices from Software System mediaCAT can display pricing information contained in 3rd party software systems if the mediaCAT Interface is enabled and this check box is selected. f. Delete data button see Clean Database section.
18.3. Clean Database

Your mediaCAT database may grow quite large over time with the constant updating of manufacturing pricing and other related information. The Delete data button initiates a database clean-up process whereby mediaCAT will scan through your system and delete all imported prices, superseded parts, and stock information.

19. Notes
mediaCAT provides the ability to create notes for products, document, and items. Notes can be manufacturer create notes or personal notes. mediaCAT will allow you to only view manufacturer notes, while you have full ability to add, maintain and delete personal notes.
19.1. Product Notes

The Product Information section contains product related information for each Stihl product. The product information form contains a Notes form that allows you to maintain and view personal product notes.
19.2. Document Notes

c. You can enter your personal notes in the document note form as shown in figure 19 2. The document note form contains standard text editing controls such as font type, font size, alignment, copy / paste, etc. Click the Save diskette icon to save the document note.

19.3. Item Notes

The Item Information section contains item number related information. The item information form contains a Notes form that allows you to maintain and view personal item notes.
19.4. Notes Find

a. The notes find method is a text search process that scans through the electronic catalog for all notes that have been applied to products, documents and items that match the search criteria. Select the Notes submenu option from the Find options menu to display the search criteria form as shown in figure 19 3. Figure 19 3 Notes Find Submenu Selection
The search criteria form is located in the top of the primary viewing area as shown in figure 19 - 3, and consists of a Description data entry field, a Part of description checkbox, three radio buttons for selecting manufacturer notes, personal notes or both manufacturer and personal notes, three checkboxes for specifying whether to search for product notes, document notes and item notes, a Start search button and a Modify button which is initially disabled.

b. Enter the text exam in the Description data entry field and click on the Part of description checkbox to ensure it is selected with a green . Select the Find manufacturer and personal notes radio button and also select all three checkboxes to search for the description exam in product notes, document notes and item notes as shown in figure 19 3. Single click on the Start search button to display the search results as shown in figure 19 4. The search results returned one entry as shown in figure 19 4. There are three columns in the search results display list; a Type column, a Description column, and an untitled column that displays the note that matched the search criteria. The text exam was found in an item note for item number 9079 319 1010. The selection of the Part of description tells mediaCAT to include a partial match of the search criteria in the search results. mediaCAT would have excluded this entry from the search results list if we had not selected the Part of description because our search criteria was exam and not the word example. You can double-click on the item note from the search results display list and mediaCAT will go directly to the Notes form in Item Information.

Remove the text exam from the Description data entry field and single on the Start search button. mediaCAT will display all notes that exist in the electronic catalog as shown in figure 19 5 since we did not specify any note text search criteria.
