What is Mechanism?

An assemblage of resistant bodies, connected by movable joints, to from a closed kinematic chain with one link fixed and having the purpose of transforming motion.

Why Quick return mechanism is used in Shaper machine?

In shaping machine the cutting take place only during the forward stroke and the return stroke is the idle stroke during which no cutting takes place. It is therefore desired that the return stroke should operate at higher speed than the forward stroke. To achieve this requirement quick return motion mechanisms are used in the shaper machine.

Mechanism of shaper machine

In shaper machine there is three type of mechanisms are used. 1) Crank and slotted mechanism 2) Whitworth quick return mechanism 3) Hydraulic shaper mechanism

1) Crank and slotted mechanism

2) Whitworth quick return mechanism

As shown in figure link 1 is slotted bar, link 2 is fixed link, link 3 is driving link and link 4 is slider. By adjusting the position between the pin B and pin D stroke length can be change. Suppose the crank rotates in clockwise direction and therefore it makes angle A1CA2 during the cutting stroke. And when it make angle A2CA1 during return stroke. The time ratio of a Quick return mechanism is the ratio of the change in input displacement during the working stroke to its change during the return stroke.

Use of Quick return mechanism

Quick Return mechanisms are used in shaper, slotting machine, and many other applications requiring a load-intensive working stroke in comparison to a low-load return stroke.

Maximum pressure and minimum speed are obtained in the beginning of cut. This maximum pressure will be helpful to hold the ram firmly with slide and keep it steady. Minimum pressure is obtained at the middle of the stroke.
