Maharashtra in western India is the home of the celebrated Paithani textile. The Paithani sari is known for its intricate weave of pure silk and gold, a tradition that has been passed down for 2,000 years in a town called Paithan, located close to the Ajanta Caves. Many of the designs in woven Paithani motifs like lotus flowers, swans, and use of gold reflect Buddhist symbols.

Meera Mehta, a graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, maintains a studio in South Mumbai. Many of her Paithani saris and brocades have been displayed in museums in the United States, Switzerland and London.
