Evaluation Plan Coming up with a way to evaluate a unit is arguably one of the most important elements to the unit,

because, if it is done correctly, I should have an accurate reading of how well my students understood the course material and the novel we studied. Its important when deciding how to evaluate an entire unit to keep in mind the key theme or themes discussed, and how each assignment worked towards showing a better understanding of that unit. Also, remember when each assignment occurred during the unit is important, as it can affect how reasonable the weight of each assignment can be. An assignment that is finished further on in the unit should show a stronger grasp of the novel, materials discusses and overall theme, because the students have had more time to consider and learn about these aspects. Throughout this unit there were 3 assignments that I asked my students to complete, as well as several journal activities that will also be factored into the overall grade of the unit. I decided to include several different ways of showing assessment for this unit, to give a better understanding of what students know and are able to show me. I started with some diagnostic assessment on my first and second days, to get a better understanding of what my students knew about anthropomorphism and racism. In this way I know where to start, and where I can go with the unit, based on what my students can already show me. For the character design assignment I used formative assessment, to ensure what I had been teaching to the students was clearly understood. While marking the assignments I would write down notes of any students who did not seem to fully grasp the concepts discussed in class, so I could talk further with and ensure they understood.

My second assignment was due near the end of the unit, so I felt it gave me the best insight into whether or not my students comprehended the lessons I was trying to teach them. I also gave them a large amount of creativity with their podcasts, so students could explore avenues that interested them while still following my instructions, which I believe is a very important aspect of assessment. My final two assignments were the wordy assignment and the journal responses, both of which I marked for completion. I also marked the journal assignment based on how their understanding of the topic of racism and the novel in general progressed throughout the unit, which is why in the chart below the journal is worth more than the wordy assignment. This is a demonstration of the total weight of each assignment marked and recorded within this unit: Assignment Character Creation Assignment Podcast Assignment Wordy definitions page Assignment Journal Assignment Weight (Out of 100) 35 35 10 20
