A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science V

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, pupils are expected to: A. Identify the different animals that belong to Echinoderms and Arthropods. B. Give examples of animals that belong to Echinoderm and Arthropods. C. Appreciate the importance of Echinoderms and Arthropods in the ecosystem through watching a video clip.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Echinoderms and Arthropods Source/ references: World of Wonders Science 5, by Lemi, Timbol and Habon Values to be integrated: Develop a genuine love for animals.

III. Learning Materials: PowerPoint, videos

IV. Procedure:
Teachers Activity Pupils Activity Good Morning Maam! Yes maam! (One Student will lead the Prayer) (Students raise their hand and say present as the teacher calls in their name)

A. Preparation
Good Morning Class... Are you ready for the class? Let us pray first... (Checking of Attendance) ...say present...

B. Motivation
Today we are going to discuss another interesting topic in science and I know that you will enjoy while learning. Do you like that? Yes maam!

But before that let us have a review with our past lesson. What was our past lesson all about? Mollusks belong to what group? Ok, so what are invertebrates? Very good!

Our past lesson was all about mollusks. Invertebrates Maam. Group of animals without backbones.

C. Presentation
Our lesson for today is about Echinoderms and Arthropods which also belongs to Invertebrates.

D. Lesson Proper
(Present video clip) Echinoderms come from the Greek word which means spiny skin. Echinoderms have an inside skeleton and structures called tube feet which they use to walk and to get food. Who can give me examples of Echinoderms? Very good! Starfishes are also called sea stars. Sea Cucumbers resemble warty cucumbers. Sea urchins and sand dollars are round and rayless. (Present video clip) Arthropods meaning joined legs. All arthropods share three common characteristics. 1. Exoskeleton 2. Segmented body 3. Joined appendage From the video youve watch, what are the various groups of animals make up Phylum Arthropoda? Very good! Crustaceans are arthropods with a hard exoskeleton, two pairs of antennae, mouth parts that are used for crushing and grinding food, and five pairs of walking legs. Crustaceans, centipedes, arachnids, and insects. Starfish, sand dollar, sea cucumber, sea urchin and brittle star.

What are the animals that belong to this group? Very good! So, lets go to the second group. What is the difference between centipedes and millipedes? Arachnids- their body is divided into two parts: the cephalothorax and the abdomen. They have four pairs of walking legs. What are the examples of animals that belong to this group? Insects the body of an insect is divided into three parts: head, chest, and abdomen. They have three pairs of walking legs attached to the chest part. Examples of these are?

Crabs, crayfish, shrimps, lobsters, and barnacles.

Centipides have a pair of legs in a segment, while millipedes have two pairs of legs in segment.

Spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks.

Butterflies, mosquitoes, dragonflies.

E. Enrichment Activity
I have here different kinds of animals and identify what group thus these animals belong through group activity. Classify the animals according to their major group, sub-group and name of the animals. Major Group Subgroup Name Picture

F. Generalization
What is Echinoderms? Echinoderms come from the Greek word which means spiny skin. Echinoderms have an inside skeleton and structures called tube feet which they use to walk and to get food.

What animals belong to Echinoderms? What is Arthropods? What are their common characteristics?

Starfish, sand dollar, sea cucumber, sea urchin and brittle star. Arthropods meaning joined legs. All arthropods share three common characteristics. Exoskeleton, Segmented body, Joined appendage. Crustaceans, centipedes, arachnids, and insects

What are the various groups of animals of Arthropods?

VI. Assignment
Since we are done discussing the different groups of Invertebrates, I want you to study in advance our next lesson which is Vertebrates.
