To develop students spelling skills using a range of strategies. To support students to utilise effective spelling strategies in their own writing.
Outcomes
WS3.11 Spells most common words accurately and uses a range of strategies to spell unfamiliar words.
Learning Intention
Students will be supported to integrate new knowledge and understandings with existing knowledge.
Success Criteria (For best success, criteria should be developed in conjunction with students)
To learn and apply skills and strategies to help us improve our spelling knowledge.
Participate and contribute to group reciprocal spelling. Participate and contribute to whole class discussions about spelling words and rules. Write spelling words using Look, Cover, Write, Check. Complete spelling activities. Participate and contribute to reflections on spelling lessons.
Explicit spelling instruction will occur during literacy sessions. Additional spelling activities will be structured into collaborative learning groups and through independent activities. However, spelling will also be systematically addressed during writing and reading lessons. Spelling lessons will follow this general format: Group reciprocal spelling for a few words selected from the weekly spelling lists. Reciprocal spelling involves collaborative discussions with peers about the meaning of new words. Students predict meanings, checking their accuracy in a dictionary and thesaurus and using the words in a sentence to demonstrate their understandings.
