WCDMA uses a combination of CDMA and TDMA technology to provide for multimedia data and cost effective voice service. WCDMA is a digital cellular specification that was initially created to provide single global cellular system. WCDMA began development in 1996, and the first commercial WCDMA digital cellular system was activated in 2001 in Japan. WCDMA was accepted as the next generation digital standard by more than 75 countries. WCDMA system can serve mobile phone with a variety of data rates and services.

Modulation
n
The radio carrier in the WCDMA system is modulated differently on the downlink and uplink. The downlink modulation use quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation for all transport channels. The uplink modulation use dual channel modulation, one channel for data channel and one for control channel.

In the compressed mode (slotted mode), transmission and reception of the WCDMA signal is stopped for a few milliseconds to allow the WCDMA system to perform measurements of other radio channels. The small time periods are called transmission gap length (TGLs). TGLs are created by either lowering the data rate, or reduce the spreading factor or puncturing the error protection code.
