PART A INTRODUCTION
In todays world, we are continuously bombarded with a never-ending stream of environmental stress factors: foods are nutrient-depleted due to declining soil fertility; water and air are polluted by an ever-increasing list of exotic new chemicals and heavy metals and there is an increasing prevalence of electromagnetic radiation. For the average person, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to know where to turn in order to detect and protect oneself from these threats to human health. The past century has witnessed a more dramatic change in our lifestyle and environment than at any other time during recorded human history. The ability of our immune systems to ward off pathogens is an acquired learned response that developed over thousands of years. However, our immune systems have not adapted rapidly enough to be able to respond effectively to the plethora of new toxins that are present in our environment today. Ultimately, many of these toxins, although in very low concentrations, build up in the body tissue and eventually have the potential to seriously upset the bodys normal biological functions. Many exogenous and endogenous residual toxins can become stored in the connective tissue and block the passage of nutrients from the blood to the cells as a result limit the detoxification of metabolic cell waste (Pischinger, Reckeweg). This build up of toxins may not create immediate symptoms, but over time can be a contributing factor to future chronic conditions. The standard treatment of chronic conditions is with symptomsuppressing allopathic drugs, whose toxic side effects add additional stress to the body. During Hahnemanns time (C.F.S. Hahnemann, German physician, 17551843, the originator of the basic foundation for homeopathy), sanitation problems were one of the major causes of disease. While single homeopathic remedies were effective in stimulating the natural defence system, balancing organ functions, and treating constitutional weaknesses, even then, physicians combined different treatment modalities with homeopathic remedies. Todays environment is characterized by a sophisticated array of hazardous toxins, chemicals and heavy metals that have the ability to enter the body by bypassing the immune system unrecognized. These intruders are capable of disturbing normal organ functions by decreasing circulation in the

affected area. For example: PCBs deposited in fish and animal flesh when consumed become deposited in human fat tissue. Treatment using herbal and homeopathic combinations can increase the bodys circulation and metabolic functions, thereby helping to unblocking the affected organ(s). For example: a pharmaceutical grade of Crataegus extract (Hawthorne) increases coronary circulation, whereas Cynara cardunculus (Artichoke) can act as a natural detoxicant by mobilizing fats stored in the liver. Efforts to increase drainage are an essential first step in successfully neutralizing and eliminating toxic deposits. Even though single high potency homeopathic remedies are subtle and powerful, substances strong fragrances can neutralize them. The endless list of additives and stimulants in our food and drink, can antidote their effect. These complications have over the past sixty years led to the development of Modern Homeopathy (Reckweg, Voll). First, because multiple disturbance factors are involved in most conditions today, to be effective a good health practitioner has to take a multi-faceted approach to wellness. Firstly, this should take the form of eliminating geopathic and environmental stresses (e.g. from sleeping area, work place, etc.); correcting the diet and improving organ functions via supplements; acupuncture; neural-therapy; structural alignments; physical therapy; and exercise. Secondly, low-potency homeopathic and herbal combinations should be used to increase circulation and metabolic functions and thereby eliminate the build-up of toxic deposits in order to initiate the self-healing mechanism. Third, after clearing the pathway to the cells, the cure and balance of constitutional weaknesses (miasmas) can be achieved with single highpotency remedies. In other words, the treatment of todays patients requires a structured combination of biological therapies.

WHY COMPLEX HOMEOPATHY?

In traditional homeopathy, the approach is to cover all symptoms with a single preparation with a prescribed potency. Unfortunately, the same factors that inhibit the regulatory processes in the human body are also limiting factors to traditional homeopathy. Plus, as noted above, the frequency of regulatory blockages brought on by environmental stresses have increased exponentially in recent years further limiting the effectiveness of single homeopathic preparations used in isolation.
It is reported that Hahnemann understood the drawbacks of using single preparations.

Experience has shown that there are relatively few classical homeopathic practitioners who are proficient at patient diagnosis on a consistent basis and achieving patient success can often be a long and drawn our process that can be quite time consuming. Furthermore, with classical homeopathy, the thoughtful talent required, the ability to be able to recall and prescribe from a diverse range of substances and potencies and the time required to become trained in and become proficient at it, all act against the broad appeal of traditional homeopathy in medicine today. It is reported that even in Hahnemanns time, complex homeopathy (the use of more than one substance) was well established and that Hahnemann himself understood the drawbacks of using single preparations. While some classic homeopaths (those who have a preference for the use of single substances) still consider complex homeopathy (a preference for a combination of substances) to be heresy, due to the long training period required to become proficient at classic homeopathy and the relative difficulty to comprehend and apply it effectively are factors which have resulted in complex homeopathy now being more widely practiced. Indications are that today, in terms of sales, complex homeopathics are favoured by practitioners by a ratio of at least four to one over single ingredient homeopathics. Complex homeopathic remedies are generally characterized by remedies comprised of a combination of more than one homeopathic single substance and are typically used to stimulate organs for detoxification and for drainage. The number of single substances can vary substantially between remedies and is predicated on the single substances being used being complementary to each other as well as being suited to the conditions and symptoms of the disease state being treated. Often the fewer substances used the more effective the homeopathic remedy. Complex homeopathics should be given in lower potencies (under D10) as these potencies have a

shorter time of action (e.g. usually under four hours) meaning they can be given more frequently. The advantages of complex homeopathy include: Once a practitioner has diagnosed a condition the correct complex homeopathic preparation can be prescribed fairly readily. A lengthy and difficult practitioner training period is not required to become proficient at their use. Most practitioners can use complex homeopathy without too may complications. The effect of low potencies can be easily observed. Side effects are infrequent, and in cases where they do occur tend to disappear when the prescribed dose is either reduced or use of the remedy is discontinued completely; Two or more complex homeopathic remedy can be taken in combination with one another, typically resulting in it being possible to reduce the required dose per remedy. Complex homeopathics need not be expensive. The broader range of substances in a remedy means there is a greater likelihood of achieving health benefit more readily in the patient than is often the case with single substance remedies. The disadvantages of complex homeopathy include: Deep-rooted problems such as psychological disorders and miasmatic conditions are not treated effectively (is such case high potency remedies such as Rubimed Psychosomatic Energetics are more appropriate). Prolonged treatment is sometimes required which may lead to patient non-compliance. As with all forms of treatment, there are individuals who are intolerant to the intended effects of the prescribed remedy. Some individuals are resistant to using alcohol-based remedies. This can be overcome by placing the daily dose of the prescribed remedy(ies) in a pitcher of water and letting it stand overnight. By the morning, the alcohol will have dissipated and the energetics of the potentized substances will have been transferred to the water, which can be sipped throughout the following day. Subject to appropriate clinical diagnoses, complex homeopathy has a rightful role to place in the effective delivery of holistic medicine. Yet, they are not intended as a cure all in all cases. For instance: in cases of viral infection, geopathic stress, focal processes, intoxication, damaged organs or severe stress treatment by alternative means can be added to the patient treatment regime. HISTORY OF GERMAN REMEDIES

In many respects German is regarded as the birthplace of botanical medicine. In 2000 there were over 70,000 biological remedies available in Germany. Since then that number has declined, as the German government has reduced the range of natural remedies available commercially. Nonetheless, historically, these remedies have been manufactured by hundreds of companies and distributed through thousands of pharmacies. This development started prior to the nineteenth century. In former times, doctors from the old school would write an individual prescription, which the patient would then take to the pharmacist who would prepare the customized prescription tailored to a particular condition from scratch. Over time as certain formulas became popular, due to good results and an increase in patient usage, pharmacists began to prepare certain remedies in larger quantities. As the scale of production started to exceed the ability to produce these batches in the pharmacy, over time smaller (then larger) manufacturing facilities became established. These pharmaceutical companies evolved purely and solely on the basis of good, consistent therapeutic results and a demand for their remedies. Consequently, these remedies and the companies that manufactured them established themselves based on results and reputation. These remedies were not cook book formulas put together quickly to make a fast and easy sale. Instead, as noted above, they evolved slowly over time and repeated use that was confirmed by positive results. What better way is there than to rely on remedies that proved themselves to be effective and safe over a long period of time? This long ago established criterion for formulating remedies is still used today in creating a broad array of remedies for addressing a broad cross section of human health conditions and ailments. This Compendium presents provides details on a carefully selected range of such products and presents a set of protocols for their use.

NESTMANN PHARMA HOMEOPATHIC AND HERBAL FORMULAS

Nestmann & Co. is located near Bamberg in the state of Bavaria. The company is surrounded by Germanys largest biodynamic farming area producing medicinal plants. The Nestmann homeopathic and herbal formulas have been developed from the knowledge gained by three generations of naturopathic physicians and pharmacists. SPECIAL COMMENTS The German Commission E approves the use of artichoke for dyspeptic problems and cites the African Pharmacopoeia which, also indicates its use for the treatment of liver dysfunction1. A study having functional dyspepsia patients treated with either a commercial artichoke leaf extract (ALE) preparation (2 x 320 mg plant extract) or a placebo for 6 weeks showed that ALE preparation tested was able to alleviate symptoms and improve the disease-specific quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia2. In another animal study, when test animals ingesting highest dose of 400 mg/ kg ALE twice daily for 7 days, it was concluded that ALE increases bile flow3. ALE also contains phenolics. The highest content of phenolic derivatives in Artichoke leaf exert a major effect on bile flow and liver protection4. Artichoke leaf extract also has been shown to ameliorates symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, plus improves health-related quality-of-life5. What does artichoke have to do with cholesterol? SPECIAL COMMENTS Due to the characteristic medicinal taste of OXYPLEX in powder form, increased patient compliance is possible with OXYPLEX CAPS. OXYPLEX is recommended for the elimination of pathological flora in the gut. While not a purgative, it can cause loose stools. If diarrhea is severe, OXYPLEX therapy should be discontinued until symptom improves. OXYPLEX should not be used for longer than one week. OXYPLEX may be used as the first phase of a gut detoxification protocol to eliminate the pathological flora. However, OXYPLEX is not effective against mycoses (other agents should be considered). URSINUM contains Allium ursinum (Wild bear garlic) extract. It is recommended in Germany for heavy metal detox of the kidneys; chelation therapy in particular using DMPS; atherosclerosis prophylactic; hypertension; eczema; and during dental treatment. Wild bear garlic contains sulphur-active substances in high concentration. Of special importance in this respect is the sulphurous tripeptide glutathion. It reacts with the toxins and forms a water-soluble product which can be eliminated via the kidneys. A lack in glutathion correspondingly increases the toxicity of the toxins, since they stay for a longer time in the body. Glutathion, however, can also neutralize free radicals to a high degree. It represents an effective protection of the body cells against oxidative harm. A further possibility of the organism to eliminate toxic substances is the enzymatic binding to activated sulphuric acid. To ensure this detoxification reaction occurs a sufficient quantity of sulphur in the body is necessary. Many sulphurous compounds are able to make complex bindings with heavy metals. The purpose of alkalizing is to decreasing acidosis in the body tissue. This is achieved by pulling acids out of the body through the reloading of the bicarbonate buffer system and supporting the digestive function through the pancreas and liver. * may also be taken in the evening before bedtime. Duration: Initially, test first morning urine pH levels with pH papers (the normal urine pH range is 6.8 - 7.4). If patient pH level is below 6.8 continue to alkalize until consistent readings in the normal range achieved. SOLIDAGO Dosage: indicated for prostate, bladder, urinary tract and kidney conditions. 40 drops in 2 oz (60mL) of pure warm water three times daily.

PSORIASIS / SKIN CONDITIONS PROTOCOL

Note: Most skin conditions are due to an overload of internal toxic stress. The skin simply works as a pressure release valve. In cases where the bodys normal elimination function is diminished or blocked (e.g. due to constipation, etc.), the role of eliminating toxins from the body often is shifted to the skin. This is why the skin is often referred to as the third kidney. It has been observed that there is a high correlation between patients with skin conditions having genetically weak kidneys. Note: Children receive half or less of the above noted adult dosages. This protocol should be followed over a period of three months or longer. During this time, foci such as parasites, dental, and geopathic zones have to be eliminated. Any sensitivities and allergies and organ specific drainage should also be addressed. NATURAL REMEDIES IN DENTISTRY

Today many dentists in Germany are including biological medicines in their practices. The following remedies are highly recommended for incorporation into any dental practice. AVENA SATIVA It is normal for patients to be nervous during a dental procedure. They can be effectively sedated using up to 50 drops of AVENA SATIVA without causing negative side effects.
CACTUS & CRATAEGUS If the dental procedure requires injections containing a vasoconstrictor, CACTUS and/or CRATAEGUS are the ideal stabilizing and protective remedies for the heart and circulation system. Patient can take 30 drops of each approximately 15 minutes before injections and, if needed, repeat after the procedure. FLEXIZYME The anti-inflammatory effects enable it be used as a means of avoiding the premature use of antibiotics. It can be used as an antiseptic mouth rinse, and it will relax breathing. It also counteracts fainting and dizziness sensations.
