Lesson Plan Topic: Read Aloud and Introduction to Natural Resources Location: On rug Objectives SWBAT to define what

t a natural resource is. SWBAT provide examples of natural resources. Standard 4.3.3.A Identify the natural resources used to make various products Materials Charlie Needs a Cloak by Tomie DePaola White board easel Chart Paper Markers Sweater or scarf Pencil Plan Write on the board the words natural resource. Boys and girls, before we read our story, Im wondering about the words I have written on the board. Who can read me them? What does natural mean? What does resource mean? So when the words natural and resource are next to eachother, what does that mean? Take a few guesses but save defining for after the story. So now that everyone is thinking about what a natural resource I want you to figure out why I have chosen this book to read. The book is called Charlie Needs a Cloak, by Tomie dePaola. Point out sheep and ask what animal it is Ask why he might need a new cloak-get at weather What might the sheep be able to provide? Show scarf At end, prompt about natural resource if necessary So now that we know that wool is a natural resource that we get from sheep to make our clothes, can anyone think of any other natural resources that they know of or that they have seen? Think/Pair/Share Water Air Soil Trees

Animals And what are these resources used for? Think/Pair/Share Drinking, cleaning Breathing Crops-cotton, corn, wheat Wood, paper Wool, milk Record this brainstorm session on chart paper. Now, lets look at all of the ideas we came up with. As a class, I want us to create our very own definition of what a natural resource is. Ex: Something found in nature that people use. Assessment Divide into partners. Hand each pair a thing/object from a bag full of random things (all are obviously made from a natural resource that we discussed and people use them). With their partners, students have to figure out what their object is, what natural resource is used to make it, and how people use them. Model with a volunteer and a sample object. Give time to discuss. Share out to class. Accommodation Highlight unfamiliar vocab from book especially for ELLs. Make sure particular children who may struggle are with helpful partners during activity. Ask particular children to sit on the front of the rug close to me so I can watch them more easily.
